I can't seem to find the max fan weight rating on this box. Does anyone know?

How do I install this to an engineered joist? Does it attach to the base of the i beam?

Answer

This is a great solution for retrofitting a fan rated box, but probably won't work in your application. This box needs a couple inches of flat vertical surface to attach to. It works well with standard dimensional lumber joints. On an engineered I beam joist, there is typically not enough surface on the face of the joist to attach to. You could add a small filler piece to pad out the web part of the joist to make it flush with the outside of the bottom rail, then screw in this box.

Size screws go into to fit fan

This already comes with the screws for attaching your fan or other fixture to it

On Old work - How hard is it to attach the bracket to the joist while reaching around the bracket? Installation instructions only detail new work

I had to climb in the attic to do it. And then getting the box to screw onto the bracket required being able to reach around it. Maybe somebody handier than me can do it from below, but I sure couldn't.

Worked mostly as advertised. It was a bit difficult to drill/drive screws for old work. I had to use a small screw wrench to get the job done, and that took quite a bit of time to torque the screws all the way in. I had an existing ceiling fan cutout, but the electrical "box" used was plastic and poorly fastened. The RACO fit in the existing circle except its thickness required me to make the existing ceiling cutout a bit wider; which caused there to a be a small gap when the ceiling fan was fastened to the RACO box. But, I'm happy with the sturdiness it provides and can probably gloss over the gap with some white tape.

Raco products are always a trusted choice when looking for electrical supplies and fittings. As an electrician, I work with many different products by different companies. When i see the Raco name I know I'm working with a quality product that is well made and designed. I am so confident in Raco products i installed them in my own home. Raco/Hubbell is your best bet when looking for a product that will last.
