Questions & Answers

Interior?

I know it says exterior, but can it be used in interior settings? If so, does the floor need to be sanded first? Thanks!
Asked by: EFW
Ready Seal is an exterior stain. However it has a very low odor and with lots of ventilation it may just work. I would stain a piece of wood bring it in and see how it goes. I would NOT recommend staining in an Occupied home. The floor surface has to be free of any previously applied sealers.

How long do I need to wait to apply stain after pressure washing my deck? Hours? Days? Weeks?

Asked by: Palmyrita
Generally, two to three days. If it's hot and the deck is in direct sun, I'm sure you could get away with 24 hrs.

Is it necessary to re-coat or will one coat be sufficient?
Asked by: tk
One coat is probably sufficient, but I wanted the dark walnut to be darker and gave it a second coat.

Is this a good product for use on pressure treated wood?

Is this a good product for use on pressure treated wood?
Asked by: tk
Yes! Give the wood at least 3 weeks to dry first. Two coats is what I recommend for treated wood. Ready Seal is thinner than some stains and will penetrate the wood better but I have found that 2 coats a few min apart gave the best results.

5 gal. Dark Walnut Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 135.

This stain is great . Just applied 17gal (more than suggested) using a pump sprayer and a brush to apply. 2000sqft of Fir log siding was the target. We unloaded siding and stacked about 5 wide side by side .Applied with the sprayer and brushed out. I did this to speed the process of just dipping and brushing. Since you can pile Ready Stain on and spread it out without darker and lighter spots ,that's how I did it. No matter how I applied the stain it all came out looking the same! Yes you should get this stain.Hint: higher pressures on pump sprayer give better results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Stain I've ever used, and I've used a lot!!! This review is going to sound like I'm affiliated with ready seal or getting paid to review, but I am not. I live in the Midwest with hot summers and cold winters and I've had a number of decks through the years--both pressure treated and cedar. This last go around I swore I'd never get wood again but wife won and we put down cedar 2 years ago. First treatment after aging was TWP stain. Followed prep to a T and applied on 70 degree day. The next spring the deck had completely peeled and looked HORRIBLE. I would never recommend TWP and personally can't believe the reviews it gets. Last summer I sanded what was left off and ordered Walnut Ready Seal online, after seeing the reviews-- which frankly didn't believe given my experience with TWP ( the worst) though I'd used Olympic, Cabot, Pittsburgh, you name it, in the past and nothing was that great that I felt compelled to use it again. The ready seal showed up and my first reaction was that it was a pain to open the cans, with the safety clips they put on for shipment. Beyond that, this stuff is like no other stain that I've used-- from the above to linseed oil, etc. it literally goes on like butter and looked great (twp or others didn't look bad, but not as rich as this stuff and application was really smooth. This was last June. I didn't leave a review then because first impression are only 20% at best with deck stains, the real test is what does it look like the following year? Well, it's one year later and after getting beaten by snow/ice, sun, humidity and lots of traffic, including dog, it looks fantastic. Even my wife commented that it looked amazingly nice 1 year later. There are a few little spots that I had to touch up, primarily from dog scratches, but overall it looks 100% better than anything else I've ever used 12 months later. My first recommendation would be to bag wood and get a composite deck, but if your already "in it" like me, I highly recommend ready seal. Shame Home Depot or other big box don't carry this in the stores, but I know why--nothing else would sell. I did Not receive anything for this review, just felt compelled to share my experience because deck staining can be one of the most frustrating homeowner experiences.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This stuff REALLY penetrates the wood. The problem with that... This stuff REALLY penetrates the wood. The problem with that is that it takes a ton of stain to cover, but from everything I have read that is what you want a deck stain to do. The water is beading so it must be working but I guess I didn't need to sand the deck down, deck clean it and then hit it with deck brightener to get this stuff to soak in. I'm having to put FOUR coats of this stuff on to get the color I expected while it took two coats with the Cabot product I used the last time I stained my deck. I guess we'll see if the increased penetration of this product results in longer wear than the Cabot, but one thing is for sure, if you use Ready Seal do not expect the same coverage you get from other sealers on the market because you'll end up being short on stain.
