Product Overview

The Emsco Group RESCUE 60 Gal. Terra Cotta Decorative Rain Barrel with integrated Planter and an easy-to-install downspout diverter kit. The diverter Kit fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts. The downspout diverter will route water to the rain barrel when raining and bypass the rain barrel when full. This rain barrel kit collects rainwater to be both environmentally-friendly and cost effective by reducing your dependence on municipal or well water. The diverter system does not have to be removed during the winter season but can be by-passed so that water flows through the downspout as usual, keeping water from getting into the rain barrel and freezing. The integrated planter can be planted into directly or a pre-arranged floral basket can be used to adorn the top of the rain barrel.
  • Environmentally friendly decorative rain barrel collects rain from your downspout to reduce your need for municipal or well water, helping you save money
  • Made from UV-stable, engineered resin for durability with the look of terra cotta
  • Built-in large planter has weep holes to help prevent over watering and root rot
  • Kit includes our patented dual downspout diverter, a 36 in. connection hose, connection grommets, a barb plug, a 48 in. main outlet hose with on/off ball cock valve, 2 hose gaskets and an illustrated installation guide
  • Diverter system automatically redirects water down the downspout when the barrel is full
  • Easy-to-install downspout diverter kit fits 2 in. x 3 in. standard or 3 in. x 4 in. high capacity downspouts
  • Holds up to 60 Gal. of rainwater
  • Can be connected to a soaker hose for convenient automatic watering of nearby plants/gardens

Can this be used without the divert or system? I want all of the water from my downspout to go in side the barrel.

The diverter is what puts the water into the barrel. It diverts water from the downspout into the barrel. If the barrel is completely full, then the diverter lets the water continue down the downspout, rather than overflowing the barrel.

what is the diameter of the diverter tubing?

About 1". If I remember correctly, the installation instructions call for a 1.5" drill bit so that there's a little clearance around the tube (for air to escape).

I can not screw the water turn off to screw in,why?

It may be advisable to query the manufacturer directly rather than asking the buyers' forum. You might want to be just a bit more specific -- whether this has to do with the turnoff valve itself, or whether this is a problem of attaching it to the body of the rain barrel. This is unclear to me. When you do query the manufacturer, you may want to include photos of the item you are having problems with. Regards.

what is the dimensions of the barrel? Height and circumference please.

Can I use a rain chain instead of a downspout to get the water into the barrel?

Asked by Beezer December 29, 2018

It would not be recommended. You would have to cut a hole in the top of the urn, which would then cause it to overflow and possibly flood your basement or foundation. Mosquitos would breed in the water and leaves and debris would cause the water to smell rotten and block the hose.

1) How do I know when it's full? 2) Can I use it with regular hose to directly water my loan?

It over flows back through the hose that is attached. Yes you can attach a hose. I love it in Kansas where we are in a drought and have not run out of water yet! Just 1/2 inch fills mine back up

I Love mine. Don't have but one downspout feeding . The planter in the top - planting in a bowl like container that sits in the recess allows for option to rotate for a more attractive planting.

Has anyone tried drilling holes in the top and using a normal diverter?

Yes, so as not to compromise your "built-in planter" You can drill on the outside of the back of the barrel. As long at the hole is sealed, water will not leak out.

What can be planted in the planter? It's really shallow! Thank you!!!!!

The plastic fitting where the spigot attaches broke clean off at the threads today. Is there any way to replace it?

Dear SeattleRainLover, I'm sorry, but the answer is 99.9% NO. No matter what you put in the hole or try to plug it with, it will still leak due to the expansion and contraction from the hot and cold weather. We at Rain Barrels N' MORE, have had several of the same brand of barrels (EMSCO) that broke from assorted reasons (UV rays, froze in the winter, ran into it with the mower) and for 8 years have tried to repair them with NO LUCK :( But the good news is, if you watch for the spring sales at Home Depot, you may be able to replace this with the identical barrel at a GREAT price!!

Excellent solution to a soggy yard
I researched rain barrels forever before I decided on this 60 gallon version. I bought two - one for each downspout in my backyard. When we get a heavy rain the yard stays swampy for days thanks to Georgia clay soil. We got our first heavy rain yesterday and while the yard had a little standing water last night, this morning it was nice and dry. Both barrels are completely full! 120 gallons of rain water saved and not soaking my yard today!! I purchased 8 large retaining wall blocks for each barrel to give them some lift off the ground. I followed the directions to a T and I am so pleased with the outcome. The only thing I wish I done differently was drilling the inlet hole. The directions say drill it 45 degrees from the weep hole which is fine if your barrel is directly to the side of the downspout. I put mine around the corner of the house so having it at 90 degrees would have made more sense. Now the hose hook up is on the side. Not a big issue but something to think about in placement. I’m horrible about prep work and prefer to rush my way through things so that’s on me for not thinking it through. I was so nervous about cutting the downspouts. I measured and measured and marked my lines carefully but it was pretty easy with a hacksaw. Probably my lack of skill but I ended up cutting them at an angle so that the back of the downspout was a smidge longer than the front. I used my sons tin snips to clean it up and have a level cut all the way around. For some reason (probably rushing!) my second install I ended up with the inlet hose dropping maybe a half inch from the downspout to my barrel and I thought it might give me trouble but it still works beautifully so while they say in the instructions to have it level, I think there is a small tolerance for it to drop a smidge. My brother also gave me a great suggestion. He said if it’s going to rain hard for several days, hook up a long cheap hose to each barrel and run the end out to the slope in my front yard or to the street and keep the line open so as the barrel takes in the rainwater it doesn’t fill up and instead redirects the water out of my yard. Much cheaper alternative to having my yard dug up and drain lines installed and all that water always going to waste! This was a great purchase and would highly recommend to others. Also a plus they are made in America.

This system had everything needed for successful installation. The BIG PLUS of this solution is that, if you follow directions and drill the correct size hole, it is "sealed" so that unwanted trash with no breeding grounds for mosquitos to contaminate the contents. Installation was quick so it has been operational for 3 weeks already. This product exceeded my expectations.

We just got the Rescue Rain Barrel today First thing I did was drill the hole for the filler hose. Then I drilled a second hole for air to release. Because I knew if I didn't we would get an air lock. An airlock is when the barrel refuses to fill because the pressure in side the barrel became equalised. And causes failure to fill fully. We could not connect it to our gutter as we rent. Now that small hole we drilled doudles as an out flow too. Once we get things figured out well plant strawberries. We are currently using the barrels planter to gather rain water .. Hey why not? The hose fits the hole perfectly. We have a shallow well pump connected to it . We can now on rainy days wash clothes using alternative power source such as a generator and or Solar. We can also water our garden using a timer system which makes effective use on water conservation.

The rain barrel was very easy to install. We were lucky in the fact that we were having gutters installed when we purchased the barrel and the installer was able to insert the diverter in the downspout for us. Does a great job catching the rain, I have plenty to water my plants. Also, enjoy being able to plant flowers in the top.

Decorative Rain Barrel with Installation Kit
Easy to install, look forward to using collected water for our plants. Instructions were very complete and easy to follow. Like the brass connection for the water hose, as opposed to plastic ones on other rain barrels. Expect to be able to use this rain barrel for many years to come.

So far this rain barrel has been a great purchase. It was a little frustrating having to drill the hole to connect it but it is working great and full from last weekends rainfall. I wish the instructions had recommended building up the base to have better flow out of the rain barrel but that will be an easy fix eventually.

We love our rain barrel! This is the second one we purchased and it is great to water all my plants. We have one in the front of the home and one in the back! Saves me from using reclaimed water that isn't always the best for your plants. I have a solar home and this just add to being "Green." I love doing what's best for our environment.

I ordered this online and had it shipped to my Home Depot that I shop at. It is really beautiful! It has the look of clay but is actually a heavy duty plastic. It fit into my car and was lightweight enough that I didn't have any trouble handling it. (I'm a small woman!) The instructions are very easy to follow and the only tools I needed were a hacksaw ,a drill , a screwdriver and a level. It works perfectly and I really love the look of it next to my deck. I highly recommend this one! Thank you Home Depot! :~)
