Does this go on and off like every 30 seconds (very short pump cycle)? My current one does that and it is SO annoying.
Asked by: leah
The unit's manual says that the unit switches on at 9 inches of water and switches off at about 4 inches. In my sump pit, it empties it out in about 5 seconds...it doesn't come on that often because our sump pit doesn't fill up quickly. It all depends on how quickly your pit fills up...

Does this pump come with the check valve or do I have to buy one
Asked by: Gram5
This did not come with a check valve. In my setup the check valve is inline with the discharge pipe.

Can I buy any pump to replace the old one?

We recently purchased a home and the sump pump does not empty the water by it self. We have to constantly do it by activating it ourselves theres also sometimes a really bad smell! I have no idea how replacing the pump works! Do I need to find a model number on the old one to find the same one or can I replace with any sump pump?
Asked by: Jen
Hi Jen. It sounds like the float that turns on/cuts off the pump from operating is bad. You might be able to just buy a new float to replace the old float to make it work. In order to tell If you can replace just the float you should see two wires coming from the pump area. One wire on the plug has a male and female end that is for the float and another wire for the pump motor itself that plugs into the float's female end. If you just have one cord you likely cannot replace just the float easily and you would be better off to replace the whole thing with a pump like the Ridgid listed. You can replace the old sump pump with any brand of pump as long as the HP is the same (or higher) and the fittings match although you can get adapters for various size fittings. You want to make sure the new pump will pump approximately the same amount of water as your old pump. Usually the same HP will pump approximately the same amount of water for most brands. The only way you can tell for sure is to bring up your current pump's information about gallons per minute/hour with a 10' vertical lift but you will need the brand and model number to bring up the information online. Don't worry if your new pump is a little more powerful than your old pump but try to keep it close to the old if possible so it doesn't short cycle which is tough on the pump motor. The reason for the smell is stagnant water due to your pump not operating properly likely due to the float not being set properly (or operating at all as you mentioned in your message). A sump pump will never take out every drop of water but should be close to the bottom (you could always add a small amount of bleach to kill the smell if necessary). Good luck!

does it attach to a garden hose

Asked by: bill
To connect this pump to a garden hose you will need to purchase a pipe size reducer, 1 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch, and also a 3/4 inch to garden hose adapter. Both are available in the Home Depot plumbing department. UNFORTUNATELY, you will not be satisfied with the flow through the garden hose, which is way to skinny for the flow that this pump can deliver. INSTEAD, purchase a 24 foot sump pump discharge hose, located in the Home Depot store near the sump pumps. You may need to ask a store associate to help find it. That hose has a much larger diameter than any garden hose.

My bad experience with this pump is nearly identical to the review posted earlier by JC. I bought the pump the first week of September 2018 and it failed the first week of December 2018. It only lasted 3 months!! The failure resulted in a catastrophic flood of my entire basement. The problem with the pump was related to both the switch and the pump itself. The float for the switch was up, but the switch didn't close. I manually exercised the switch and got the pump to restart, but it was making a terrible noise. In my experience with this retailer, this is a new low in quality and therefore this will be the last sump pump I will ever buy from them. There is no excuse for a pump at this price point to fail in the first 3 months. This was not the lowest cost option available at the time. I paid extra for what I had hoped was a better quality unit.

The quality of the material really surprised me, as well as the overall construction of the submersible. Install was actually quick and easy once I had the pipe-setup required and boy does this thing pump water quick. Our old sump would take minutes to drain, this one slams through the water like no tomorrow. From a full sump to empty in under 30 seconds. The float works really well and isn't hollow - so not to worry about it breaking any time soon. The cord is just long enough to reach up about 8 feet to where our electrical box is located. The cycle time is around 20 seconds, from full to empty once it gets going. A nice feature is the dual handle on top to maneuver or pull from virtually any direction. The filter on the bottom is small enough for water and will keep virtually everything out so there will be no pump damage. Extremely happy with this pump and with the way it is designed - I am thinking this will last quite a long time.

Disconnect one end the check valve, pull up the old pump from the sump, remove pvc pipe from pump, connect pvc pipe to new pump, drop pump in sump, and connect to check valve, connect to electrical out, ensure nothing is blocking the float.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 3 of these have failed me in 10 years I have bought 3 of these over the past 10 years. About every 3 years they go bad, right after the warranty expires. From the pump going out to the switch breaking, I have had multiple problems. I am replacing this one with an ion sump from metropolitan. If I could give this negative stars I would. A pump should last more than 3 years with normal use. Nothing about where I live at causes excess use and wear on the pump. When it rains, it does off and that is really it. I could not be more disappointed in the longevity of this product

Both the switch and motor are not working correctly. When I removed the pump from the sump pit I found more rust on this unit than on prior units after 4 years of use. I have an arthritic condition in my left hand so I don’t have great hand strength but I cannot remove the PVC pipe from the pump the rust is so bad. I will be returning this pump to Home Depot and buying a different brand. Quite thankful that I used the Home Depot card and can return it to the store. We have an underground spring on our lot so our sump pump runs on a daily basis.
