Questions & Answers

What is the advantage to wiring the table saw for 240v rather then 120v?

Asked by: dapatch
Running your saw on 240v will have 2 benefits. Your saw performance will benefit from the lower current associated with 240v. And, despite all the power companies bill for Kilowatts and Kw = volts (V) x amps (I) geniuses, you will save some money on electrical power BILLING. However, this will be negligible unless you are running a carpentry shop because, at least most of us, use a table saw infrequently. First, another theoretical consideration are I^2 x R losses (which manifest as heat--i.e. hot motors). As far as performance, the important thing to recognize is that 120v will produce four times the heat and power losses (that you pay for) compared to 240v. As to cost, yes theoretically you consume the same power either way assuming away I^2R loses. But, whether you use 120 or 240 for certain loads is determined at your load center, downstream of your utility meter. Your utility meter has no way to differentiate between your 120 and 240 volt loads. What it measures is the current and amperage passing through the meter upstream your power panel by driving a little motor usually. The voltage does not change significantly but does some depending on demand on the larger transmission lines supplying your house. Severe conditions are brown-outs. You only have one meter for your residence (usually). Your utility meter calculates Kwh for billing purposes under a number of assumptions (more than this) and does not differentiate between your 230 and 120 loads. Utility companies don't need to go to the extra expense of doing so because the can recapture the economic loss statistically via rate structures. So the voltage measured at the meter is what the utility is supplying to you. 230v, using less current for the same power, will look like less power to the meter. Lesser factor, you lose about 4x less of the power that you do pay for. This is not the only assumption that causes a difference between what electricity you are billed for and what you actually use. Power factor (Pf) is a major reason. Every motor in your home and shop has a designed power factor--basically the power that is apparently used compared to real power. The higher (better) the power factor, the more expensive the motor's components. Utility companies do what they can to encourage high power factor components but .... And, they have the same problem on the grid. If you have a 230 circuit available and can make the conversion yourself, it would be good for your saw--you might see it at startup. Otherwise, it is pretty expensive to have an electrician put in a circuit/receptacle for you. Most of us are better off getting by on 120v.

Do the screws hold the throat plate in place?

Probably seems like a dumb question but I am a rookie with this stuff. It seems obvious that the screws would hold it in place but once I did it it did not look right. Did not make sense to me that the screws weren't flush with the plate. And the assembly instructions never mention screws so I am thinking that the screws stay in the holes underneath the throat plate and throat plat simply slides into its slot?
Asked by: Rook
I don't have this particular saw... but I have used others where the screws are there to simply adjust the height of the plate so you can keep the plate even with the table surface.

does this saw come with a blade?

Asked by: mmccutc01
This saw came with a 10" blade which I still use after 4 years. It works just fine and gives clean cross cuts as well as rip cuts. I've since added to my arsenal a stacked dado set and a thin kerf nomination blade. But the supplied blade will do you well.

Looks like Ridgid missed the point on this. Just yesterday I bought their R4512 professional table saw at home depot. Today I decided to assemble all the components, then the problems started. I called Ridgid customer service and the operator said a new outer corner and right panel was ordered and will be delivered in about 7 to 10 business days (why so long?!?!). I continue pulling parts out of the box, just to found another outer corner with a deep scratch. This time I contact though the email, they reply they will NOT replace this because is cosmetic. All of this makes me wonder: where is their quality control? Definitely this will be my very first ridgid power tool and the very last. Update: I decided to visit the Home Depot store again. They went the extra mile and made things right.

Likes - 1. Is powerful enough for homeowner needs and is quiet for a table saw 2. Mobile base is great, must have 3. Weight - is sturdy, doesn't vibrate. 4. Dust collection is pretty good. 5. Riving knife and blade guard are really good. 6. Switch is nice. Dislikes - 1. The Fence is horrible ( see picture I upgraded to a Delta T3 and that fence has issues too(fence faces are concave??) so I added an aluminum extrusion side, result = awesome accuracy. 2. Flimsy sheet metal attachments ( I replaced one with custom add on). 3 Throat plate tabs are too shallow making it hard to make a zero clearance insert. I opted to buy a dado throat plate and add a piece of mdf to make that a zero clearance insert. Its works ok and wont break on me. 4. My right miter slot is not parallel with the left (not a deal breaker, I align everything based on the left slot. 5. The turning wheels are just ok, good enough. Conclusion - factor in the cost to add a new fence down the road if you want accuracy and safety, maybe build your own fence to reduce the cost (ibuildit.ca has plans - no affiliation I am just a fan). I would buy it again, but if I had the cash buy a SS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything the five star reviews said it would be My son and I really needed a new, higher quality table saw in a new small shop we were building. I started to settle on this saw for the price and reviews. I started off as usual focused on the negative reviews causing me to delay my purchase, which in the end, ended up costing me 100 more dollars due to the price changing. Finally convinced myself and bought it. I found that a lot of the reviews with issues were from an older model year with a bad reunion cast which had been resolved. Since I bought it I have never been happier. I’m no longer fighting with the junk saw I had before. I had to adjust the parallel of the blade which was incredibly easy. The fence alignment was a little trickier and still not quite as perfect as I would like....but honestly I think having that perfection would only subconsciously make me feel better since I have not noticed it at all on my cut quality. My advice if you are on the fence like I was...BUY THIS SAW!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw for price This saw has great improvements from older Ridgid model; enclosed motor, riving knife, etc. Does a really good job (not perfect but really good) of eliminating sawdust with 4" vac line attached. Easy assembly and pretty accurate right out of box. Have a friend on call to stand it up though. 30" rip width allows easy lengthwise cuts on 4x8 sheet goods. Have not tried to cut 8/4 maple yet but no problems ripping 2x6 lumber with included combo blade. Standard aftermarket blades fit with no issues. Only thing I didn't like is table insert. Included insert works great, levels easily and is secure but is 1/8" steel. Thin edge supports at opening make it challenging to make zero clearance or dado inserts. For folks looking for a good middle of the pack tool, this saw will be perfect. Better than most other inexpensive brands, but it's also not a top of the line professional tool. Well worth the price, and if you can get it on sale, you can't go wrong. I'm very happy with it and look forward to years of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take your time on initial setup I just finished setting up my Ridgid Table Saw, and this is an amazing machine. You will need to take your time on the initial setup though. Out of the box it was out of adjustment in every way possible to be out of adjustment. I spent an entire day doing the initial adjustment. I even had to file down the rip fence indicator insert a bit to give it room to move over far enough to get it in adjustment. Same for the bevel indicator. You can find the best tutorial on table saw setup and tuneup on youtube. Search for "wood whisperer table saw tune up." Once the saw was finely adjusted, it cuts like a dream. It is dead-on accurite now. It's also VERY quiet, and runs with almost no vibration at all. It's the best piece of woodworking equipment I've ever owned. The built in dust collection chute is great!. No more piles of sawdust on the floor. Don't let the complex setup put you off. No tool is ever really ready to use right out of the box. To get the best result from any power tool, they ALL need tuned up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw, better then expected In the past years I have used mostly portable contractor saws. I was shocked initially by how quiet the saw was and how smooth it cuts. Starting from the beginning I can see were some people may have difficulties assembling this saw. It takes patients to get everything leveled and lined up properly. People have mentioned drilling out holes to get things lined up. I thought for a moment that this might be needed but after fine tuning things it was not necessary you just need patients to get things lined up perfect. Saw cuts straight and even. I have ripped ¾ with it and it rips it effortlessly. Saw has plenty of cutting power even though I was worried about it having a 13 amp motor instead of a 15 like most of its competition. Overall I am very happy with the saw. After comparing it to the porter cable and craftsman the Ridgid has smoother controls and metal gears I have more confidence in the Ridgid and just in case it has a life time warranty that no one else offers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the Money! After checking on a few brands of table saws, I actually purchased a PC270 from another box store. Brought it home and used it a half a dozen times before a knock developed up near the arbor. I was dissapointed. After returning it, I purchased this machine. After getting the chance to use both, the Ridgid is hands down the better of the two saws. The fence system on the Ridgid is by far more superior. When moving it, the tail end moves consistantly with the lead end. The wheel system is very handy when moving is needed. The extension wings are a thicker guages steel, but honestly, all they are there for is support for larger peices. A peice of plywood or something can be added to the extreme right hand side of the table between the rail and fence extension. As long as you put everything together per the direction, the saw will be right on. The only thing to even complain about is the blade it comes with. It isn't very good. I purchased a Diablo when I bought the saw. it is worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value in a hybrid cabinet saw Purchased this based on online research and great value pricing at Home Depot. Assembly in my shop went very well. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. I assembled in inverted position after cutting sides away from the box as directed. Once the base was mounted it took a buddy and I to flip the saw upright to finish assembly. It's a heavy and well built unit that is easy to move on its caster base. The foot lever makes it easy to lower in location for working and it sits firmly on the shop floor. The blade checked out dead on square with the cast iron table and with the provided fence without adjustment. The fence is good quality and slides nicely over the guide rails and the table top. The mitre gauge was also dead on square and glides smoothly in the table grooves. Very happy with its operation after making a couple small projects. Dust control was easy to hook up to the 4" base. Love my new table saw and would recommend to others.
