Questions & Answers

Can I wet grind concrete with the Rigid diamond cup wheel?

I need to grind down a hump in my concrete floor and want to minimize dust.
Asked by: MT
Works great with water. I suggest working small areas and stand a few 2x6 blocks around the area you are working to contain the wet muddy spray. This worked great for me and made cleanup a lot easier

Can I use a 4" grinding wheel on a grinder designed for 4.5" wheels?

Asked by: BobM
yes. buy a 4-5" shroud, the 4-5" wheel is fine in the shroud and with the right angle grinder. there are at times fitment problems between the 4 items (see vacuum below): so plan ahead you may have to switch things around despite your planning. ALWAYS USE DUST CONTROL: a grinder dust shroud connected to a shop vac with a proper filter and likely wear a safety mast rated for silicon dust as well. i was told by a 3M agent their economical 2091 is ok for intermittent use: but they have special ones for professionals who continually work in fine silica dust areas. in general: a larger wheel (ie, 7") would take more power than your grinder has for more than intermittent use, it would over-heat.

can this be used to remove rust and paint on steel surfaces

can this be used to remove rust and paint on steel surfaces
Asked by: yabba
in general, no. use a cup brush wheel. you might overheat and loose diamonds or even segments. mechanically you should be kinda flat - smackign a metal edge would be dangerous and cause segments to come off

I used this product to level out sidewalk trip hazards (some 1/2 inch high). I was impressed how easily and quickly it ground the concrete away. I thought this grinding was going to be a hard job and it wasn't! Be sure to be safe when doing this - don't just use a ordinary dust mask - use a fume mask to protect your lungs. Safety glasses or a face shield is a must. This is what I used. 1.Milwaukee 7 Amp Corded 4-1/2 in. Small Angle Grinder Model# 6130-33, 2. Professional Multi-Purpose Respirator Black Drop Down Model # 63023DHA1-C 3. 3M Clear Professional Face Shield Model # 90028-80025 4. Heavy gloves 5. Knee pads or kneeler 6. Leaf blower to get rid of the dust - this process makes LOTS of dust - don't breathe it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great Great for grinding paint and others dry adhesives off concrete. Also it's good for leveling small surfaces. However, buy a dust shroud and hook it to your shop vac or you'll makea huge mess of fine dust.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not well balanced I have used other cup wheels mainly made by Pearl that are much more expensive. I got this to grind some uneven surfaces. Works decent but it is really bouncy. I will use it up but I dont think I will buy another one. I decided to try it out because the price is very low. There is no way I would use this to bull-nose granite or anything that requires precision. It is just too bouncy. It is fine for grinding uneven concrete though.

This wheel in conjunction with the use of a dust collection shroud- http://www.homedepot.com/p/Dustless-Technologies-7-in-Polycarbonate-Pro-Dust-Shroud-in-Black-D1807/206024 was fantastic at removing thinset mortar from a plywood floor. Take your time and apply even pressure and you'll get it done

This kind is good because it's a little longer life, DOES NOT THROW DUST out like the spirals (most aggressive cut), can do aggressive grinding, and little better finish compared to spiral. The threaded arbor is a big plus: without it, it would wobble and be impossible to (set straight). ALWAYS USE DUST CONTROL: a grinder dust shroud (buy one) connected to a shop vac with a proper shop vac filter and also wear a safety mast rated for silicon dust. I was told by a 3M their economical 3M 2091 is ok for light construction use. 3M has special filters for professionals for fine silica dust areas. (note: never breath any at all, zero) Finish grade: the sanding grit level works just like sandpaper on wood: it's the same for abrasives on concrete too: run your finger across you'll know the grit, about 80 or so? You need 1500-2000 for a "smooth wax-able" floor (need to rent machine from HD for that). It takes much effort to remove say 1/2" off a small area (you won't be doing that on a large area). Do not use on metal would overheat and loose diamonds or even whole segments. Don't catch a hard (metal) edge that could tear off a segment. Use a rock pick or air hammer / chisel for gouging out large quantities of stone out of a floor - this is a sander and should be used as. My project: I'm smoothing concrete walls (not perfect, just get jaggies off so white versabond will spread reasonably, as a high quality stucco), and also treating some high areas on floor before tiling.

When I looked to rent one of these to prep a concrete floor redo downstairs, the rental cost was as much as the purchase price, and I already had a 4" grinder, so the choice was simple. The swirl marks that were left in the floor actually added to the effect and when we applied a two part epoxy floor coating and the finished floor not only looked excellent because of their addition, but instead of paying a contractor a couple of thousand dollars to do the work, we were able to do the job for a couple of hundred bucks! This wheel made fast work of the job and was everything and more than I expected.

Bought this item to remove undulations in walls of a concrete jacuzzi, prior to resurfacing. It can be used flat against the surface and the edge cuts as well, so it cleans out the corners too. It is much faster than a masonary grinding disc, and will last much longer, so far the only sign of wear is to the paint finish! Also available in 5" dia. which would fit 4.5" grinder and 12" which needs a larger machine.

We had an offset that developed between the concrete walkway and the street which was just resurfaced. I attached the Rigid 4 in. double row diamond cup wheel to my 4 in side grinder and took down the high side to eliminate the tripping hazard. Worked out great.
