Questions & Answers

Where is the "Planer" function?

This machine looks like a Jointer to me. Normally Jointer/Planers have two separate functions that require the machine to be reconfigured to change between one function and the other. While this machine does have the jointer capability, I don't see the capability to perform the planing function, in which the thickness of the piece of wood can be accurately controlled by running it between rollers.
Asked by: Jeff
This machine is NOT a jointer/planer, it is a JOINTER and that is all it is!

6 amp seems under powered for a jointer?

I know that this model is a couple hundred, or more bucks but at 6 amps it seems like it would have some problems with hardwoods?
Asked by: bob
Answer is on page 7 of instruction manual. It is 12 amp on 110v, and 6 amp on 220v. Only Ridgid could explain why they ship it wired for 110v, but list amps for 220v. I was also very leery of a 6 amp jointer.

Has this jointer be discontinued? I don't want to buy a unit being discontinued. Thanks

People can't find it in stock at Home Depot nor are replacement blades readily available
Asked by: JustAnt
This item doesn't appear to be discontinued from what I have seen online, just out of stock. However It is made in Taiwan and ships by overseas container ship I am sure. Sometimes those ships can take 6 weeks to 4 months to reach destination so I have heard depending on stops and layovers in between. When I purchased mine in 2009 it was in the store along with the table saw and the bandsaw, which of course made it an easy same day pick up with my truck. I purchased the bandsaw at the same time. Both have done me well and I really don't need another of each but I have been considering the Grizzly 8 inch Jointer with the Byrd shelix head and the 14 inch resaw bandsaw. The Ridgid jointer And bandsaw are great performers and continue to perform well, but if you don't see them in stock and you need one soon then you may consider a Grizzly or Shop Fox or another quality brand. Even if it was discontinued you could find replacement parts that fit many of this same type of jointer through Grizzly.

As a hobbyist wood working who aspires to be more, I have had my eye on one of these for over 2 years. Purchased a table saw, band saw, drill press, thickness planner, etc thinking I could get around having a jointer. Built 2 different planer sleds (different designs) but they were time consuming to build, finicky and cumbersome to use. Finally broke down and purchased this when I get a Home Depot credit card offer. I LOVE IT! It is so easy to make nice flat straight stock from rough lumber that I purchase from the local supplier. Looked hard at other brands but could not come up with over $1000 for a Jet and was not impressed with the Grizzly (plus - no free financing and you have to pay shipping). A couple of helpful hints: 1) My came with the outfeed table sightly higher than it should have been. This issue manifested itself in the following way. As I would move the stock into the blade, right after the blade removed the stock the edge would "stick" on the outfeed table and I would have to lift it slightly to force it on through. The manual addressed this nicely in the troubleshooting section, but note that the little wheel for adjusting the outfeed table is hard to turn at first. It is also very precise. It has to be dialed in just right to ensure that the lumber slides through smoothly but does not experience sniping. Took me about 6 adjustments to get it just right. 2) The little grey knob that is attached to the fence was hidden in a piece of Styrofoam in the box. Be sure to check thoroughly before recycling the packing contents! 3) Yea it is only 6" wide but that is really plenty for most needs. Worst case scenario you can joint and glue up boards wider than 6". 4) It is very useful for planing a board that is already cut to size without worrying about sniping , assuming it is setup correctly as mentioned in #1 above.

It powers through with great ease and creates perfect 90 degree joints and planes perfectly flat faces. All adjustments are easy and accurate. Assembly and set up went well. A second person is helpful when you want to lift it...it's definitely heavy and solid! This unit puts out a ton of sawdust...and I strongly suggest you hook up your shop vac to the included dust port. If not, the sawdust will gather and clog inside the unit and you'll have to spend time cleaning it out! Suggestion: Since it does not come with wheels, I mounted a Portamate-1000 Universal Mobile Base ($60) to it while I had it upside down during assembly which was quite easy. I am extremely thankful I did...this beast weighs a ton and I need to move it around in my shop! Check out the photos... I hope you enjoy yours as I do mine!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very well built jointer, great for DIY woodworkers I have this jointer for over a year. It is a heavy and sturdy jointer that does it's job very well. Low noise and very minimal vibration. It is great tool for DIY woodworkers and with Lifetime Service Agreement this tool should be a great addition to a small shop. While I still use this jointer and get very good results , I've started to look for a bit bigger and more powerful machine. Recently, I had to joint 2 inch thick boards 10-11 ft. long and this kind of job requires bigger and heavier jointer.

I knew that if my wood working was going to move to the next level I would need a tool like this. It was easy to assemble. I'm finding more and more uses for it. I've been working with it for just a few weeks. Nothing like smooth square wood! Chips are not coming down the chute as well as I would like. Nothing a hose adapter to my dust collection system will not fix.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ridgid jointer I'm very pleased with this Jointer It is definitely a heavy-duty piece of equipment.. I I do a lot of furniture building with reclaimed wood and pallets. This is definitely the tool for that. It doesn't eliminate the need for a planer but it's a lot faster when the jobs overlap. It is definitely a two-person job to assemble it as it is very heavy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty Awesome Love this jointer. It has a cast iron bed on it and it's very heavy. Squares up boards real well. Unfortunately my garage has bad witing so I cant run more than one tool, so the dust/shavings get everywhere, and sometimes I have to shut it off and reach my hand up there and pull shavings out. Defenitely recommend though.

I am a Cabinetmaker by trade working for a large volume furniture and cabinet shop and have owned this jointer for 9 years and use it in my home hobby workshop. This jointer does an excellent job of making straight edges for glueing, or straightening twisted lumber for project use. I have used this jointer on bookcases, entertainment centers, kitchen cabinets, and many other projects with zero issues. If you take time to get the setup correct from the start then this jointer will do what t is suppose to do. Make straight glue ready edges or square two 90 degree sides for the process to make s4s lumber, ready for your planer. I do plan on upgrading to the Byrd shelix cuterhead soon to help make this machine even more maintenance free and even more of a pleasure to use. Taking the proper time to set up and occasionally check the indeed and out Feed tables with a straightedge in relation to the cutterhead I have had no issues with this jointers performance whatsoever.

I do wish this tool had a helical head as nobody around here sharpens joiner knifes. I wish Home Depot stocked the knives for this machine. Other than that this is a well built machine at an affordable price.
