Questions & Answers

Can you explain the <6% THD?

I am planning to run our welder from either the 120 or 230 receptacle on this unit. I'm thinking the THD has to do with the cleanliness of the power output sine wave, but I was hoping to get more information about that, or any additional information about running a MIG welder from this unit, as well as other job site tools. I know the wattage won't be a problem, our welder is 20amps / 230 V at the absolute highest setting, just was hoping for any more feedback about using this particular generator with a welder.
Asked by: jph8282
From looking at the official Ridgid rep answer I think I see the problem. They apparently don't know what THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is. It has nothing to do with the variability of the wattage. It is a measure of how much the AC sine wave produced by the generator approaches a true sine wave. A periodic wave (even one not quite sinusoidal) can be approximated a series of sinusoidal waves whose frequencies are whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency (60 hz in this case). Those multiple sinusoids are called harmonics. THD is the ratio of the power contained in all of those harmonic frequencies to the power contained in the fundamental frequency. The more harmonics are in the wave, the more distortion is in the wave. Hence it is a measure of how clean the power is. 6% is usually considered pretty clean for a non-inverter portable generator, many would say it would be acceptable for electronics--although an inverter generator (many of which are as low as 2 or 3 % would be even better). However, Ridgid would have to confirm this THD is really below 6%. Given the answer from the rep I'm not sure they understand what THD is.

Neither the engine nor owner manual provides any information on initial charge of battery or where to connect the battery maintainer terminal. Rigid - provide a diagram on instructions?
Asked by: TKM
Thanks, Rigid, for the reference to Fig. 2, item Q, which indeed shows the maintainer connection (freed from the wire bundle tied with a zip tie) - that is, shows it if one has the 3-31-18 (REV:03) version of the manual, the one that one can download from this webpage. But I can assure you that the 5-27-15 (REV:01) which came with my generator on January 7, 2019 does not show the maintainer connection in the graphic in Fig. 2 or in any of the lettered items in the legend for Fig.2, which ends at "P" [the letter just before "Q"]. You would do well to include the current owner's manual with the products you ship, rather than one that is more than 3 years out of date. The Quick Reference Guide included with the generator also is dated 5-27-15. I hope this does not mean my generator is already almost 4 years from date of manufacture. But I do compliment you on the speed of your reply and the accurate information you provided as to location (if not to manual) of the SAE connector. Rigid seems to be one of the better manufacturer's at responding to customer questions.

Main reason for this purchase was the benefit of the Honda engine! Have only started it to "listen" to it run. Had to disassemble the handle to load it in camper-shell covered p.u. bed. Fold-down handle maybe?

Purchased from Home Depot on line. Delivery - There was some uncertainty over final delivery date, which varied over seven days right up to the day of delivery. When I checked the tracking one morning, the HD site said it would be delivered that day. I went to the store. The service desk told me it was moved out roughly five days. That afternoon, I got the e-mail telling me to come and pick it up. The left hand and right hand of HD don't work in synchronization. Out of the box - easy to assemble, twenty minutes at most. No issues at all with the quick set up. However, it is not clear from the instructions that the battery will charge automatically as the generator is run. It is also not made clear why a separate trickle charger is supplied. The DC wiring diagram does not show a pigtail for attaching the separate charger further adding to the confusion. First start - Started right up. Had to let it run quite a bit longer than the 15-30 seconds the manual suggests before opening the choke fully, but it was about 10 degrees F at the time. The engine was constantly "surging" until a small load was added (maybe 1000W) then it ran more stably. Next run the next day - started right up, same surging. As load was added, the engine operation became steadier. I allowed it to run out of fuel intentionally. After removing the load, I refilled the gas tank and re-started. With the choke full on, it started on the first pull every time, but stalled after a few seconds. It wouldn't start with no choke at all. So, the warm re-start (on a very cold day) was tricky and required some fiddling with the choke. Once the engine was warm enough to run without stalling, I added load to try to get near the generator capacity. At about 4100W, half the generator tripped. Looking at the circuit diagram, it seems the Double-Pole breaker shown on the AC wiring diagram is really two separate single pole breakers. None the less, 4100 Watts represents only about 17A @ 240V for a balanced load. Even with a 60/40 imbalance, this would still impose only 20.5A on the heavily loaded leg. This is nowhere near the 30A rated capacity of the generator, let alone the 36.5A of the 8750 "Starting Watts" I loosened the screws of the panel, to see if it was wired correctly. All the wires appeared to be in the right place. The wires are too short to allow a full examination of the panel so I took a hand full of photographs to improve (and document) my examination. Upon examining the photographs carefully, it was obvious that the positions of the 20A and 30A breakers had been transposed. Wired as such, there is no way I could get more that 2/3 of the generator's capacity without tripping. I bought this unit because of the Honda engine and its reputation for reliability. The price of this unit, when on sale is very attractive, however, these generators are apparently never load-tested, and QC and consumer support are non-existent. As I am finishing this review, I have been on hold for nearly 4 HOURS with the Ridgid Consumer Support Department! It's possible that Home Depot would take this unit back, but, for such a minor issue, loading it up to bring it back is quite a hassle. [According to the instructions, you cut the box to remove the unit.] Also, this seems to be an item that's not stocked on a regular basis, and the wait for a new one could be indeterminate. Would I recommend this unit? No. The flaw was very minor, but not everyone can or will try to fully test a backup generator during commissioning. When you need it, you really depend on it performing to specs. If it fails for some reason, you expect some level of customer support. In a real emergency, this machine may leave you worse off than before as you waste time trying to troubleshoot, or get some assistance from the supplier.

There is minimal assembly when you receive it, took about 20 minutes. After adding the oil and gas, it started right up in one second, honda motors usually do!! Its a very cool looking generator!! I'm not sure about longevity yet, because I just got it, the generator head doesn't look as beefy as my Wacker Neuson generator of the same size, but I'm sure it will do just fine for home backup. It's not going out to the jobsite to get day by day beatings like the Wacker does. The electric start worked flawlessly right out of the box, and I keep the battery on a tender, so it will have full power when I need to use it. All in all I'm very happy with my purchase, and if anything happens I will update this review!!
