Questions & Answers

How are other owners keeping the sleeves from slipping off the larger drums?

I have been relatively successful with slipping carefully measured scraps of paper or fine grit sandpaper between the rubber and the sleeve, but the 2" sleeve is driving me nuts. I think the Diablo Sleeves are a few thousandths larger. Give me some of your ideas.
Asked by: OneCoolWoodshop
I. Watched a video review and it addressed two issues. First was about the top nut on the belt set-up getting to tight. He addressed it by saying since thr thread is left hand and the belt turned in the direction which further tightened it, the used need to only snug it and when it runs it will further tighten. When removing, it will be tight....squeeze the 4x24 belt then the nut rembering it’s a left hand thread. Second item addressed was exactly what you have as a problem. He STATED THE FIX WAS to squeeze the sanding tube and THEN tighten the nut. When he, the video person, did so it totally fixed the issue you and others talked about. Hope this helps all who have had these issues.

Whats the sanding belt size

Asked by: ME
4x24" - same as most portable belt sanders so there are lots available anywhere and at reasonable prices.

The tighting nut just spins

I installed the belt sand to my Oscillating Edge/Belt Spindle Sander. I am finished using it and wanted to remove it but all the unlocking nuts just spins and I cant remove the belt sander. Does any one have any ideas on how to remove this nut?
Asked by: Roger
Hopefully by now (2.5 yrs later) you finally figured out you were turning it backwards. It's a LH thread. That said - if it really 'just spins' that means it's stripped. The nut/ the shaft/ or both. Doesn't surprise me - cheap plastic machine made in China - but Ridgid does claim 'lifetime' warranty so let's see if they make good on it. I'd take it back to HD and demand a refund. They might only give you a store credit but I've never had a problem with them ever even questioning me. They sell so much of this stuff - what's one refund here or there...

Can it grind metal

Asked by: UncleLogan
This is the best tool in my shop. If you mount a good belt you can sharpen chisels and lath tools scary sharp. The belt has no perceptible wear and the machine is loafing compared to sanding a big width of wood. If you look for a high end tool sharpener it will be a belt sander for 4 times the price. I have had this tool for at least 15 years. No problems of any kind. I discovered the sharpening capability when I got my lath. Looked for a way to sharpen turning tools and found that all the tools that gave you the correct angle and allowed curved cutters to move on the abrasive where way out of my price league. I built angle jigs that fit in the miter slot of the infeed table for each of the tools and was astounded at how easy it was to put an edge on the lathe tools. The angle setting feature of the infeed table allows for compound angles which you need in some lathe tools. So then I built a jig for my chisels and can now shave with them. Also I regularly clean edges and round corners on aluminum sheet up to 1/4 inch. It will put a bevel edge or clean burrs on aluminum and brass. All of the folks who said you can not do this should try it once it will open up a new world for projects you can do in your shop. This tool is best value for performance since the hammer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works. Shopped around. Rigid has best price for features, not that sandpaper going around and up and down is a complicated concept. Making rocking horses for twin grandsons. Using Oak and Aspen. Eight crooked legs to round and four curved rockers. This sander has saved me hours of work. Band sawed close to pattern line, sanded to line. Rounded "shaped" legs in sander. Very quiet, plenty of power, belt sander very handy. Used the drop table for 45degree sanding, indexed well and worked as expected. Shop vac got most of the sawdust. Not perfect, but collecting sanding dust is like herding cats; a challenge under the best of conditions. One problem. The blue sanding belts Home Depot sells will not stay centered on my machine. The ride up or down, no amount of adjusting worked. Stick with the brown belts. Oh - the accessary slots are great but be carefull cleaning up, spent more than a couple of minutes searching the sawdust in the vac for a spindle washer.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 Units...2 starting capacitor failure We purchased 2 units for Vision Quest in Philadelphia. The latest (2nd) FAILED before the final warranty confirmation was confirmed. In fact, after completing he online registration, Ridgid contacted me yesterday (11/18/2015) stating I need to send in the ACTUAL RECEIPT. Seems that's a way to delay warranty. NO thanks...Original unit purchased in Mt. Laurel, NJ In any event, I returned the unit to the HD on the Roosevelt Blvd. and repurchased what is now the 3rd unit. The HD returns gave me a tough time because it was purchased in NJ. Why was this an issue? I am now going to register the 3rd unit and roll the dice. We also have a drill press from Ridgid. I'm sure the previous instructor didn't register that unit. Don't believe me? contact me Mr. Rob Technical Arts Instructor, Vision Quest 5201 Old York Road, Philadelphia, Pa 19141 IFool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent tool, but the LSA... no. Easy to use, fast to set up and does a really decent job. I used mine for about a year and the motor locked up. I took it back for the LSA and much to my surprise, they first wanted me to pay them an additional $18 to ship it off, then pay even more if while repairing it, the cost is more than anticipated... what the heck is that? I would rate this tool very high (even though it locked up on me... things happen) but the LSA is a joke. On top of that, I was informed that it would take 10-12 weeks for turnaround time. ??? Three months? God forbid you had any jobs to do! Since I use mine for custom knives and sheaths, this is costing me more money than it is worth. I may as well go buy another sander somewhere else and sell this one ASAP. Again, the sander itself works great and one can expect tools to fail on them at some point, but the hassle of the LSA is what ruins it for me.

I just bought one of these at the end of March 2018, used it twice, and on April 19th, the motor stopped working right. When I turned it on, the motor would hum but not spin. I would say very poor workmanship and QA. I saw others say in their reviews that the motor was prone to fail, but I figured I'd give it a chance. Too bad too, because I really liked the sander. It did exactly what I needed it to do and seemed versatile, but having the motor go bad with only about an hour of operation does not speak well of Ridgid workmanship or quality control practices, so I have to give it a very poor review. I suppose if you have $200 hanging around that you're willing to toss to the wind for an hour's worth of work, go ahead and buy it...but be forewarned - it might not last that long and Home Depot is very strict about their 90 day return policy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK value - but expensive repair part I believe I have had my sander for a little over 2 years. It has given me pretty good performance .. I've gone through a lot of belts, and sand a mix of hardwoods, as well as deer and elk antler. I've recently notice the motor bogging down easier and easier, then a bit of a hesitation then 'groan' when starting. Now it doesn't start at all. It appears to be the motor, or at least brushes, but by the drawings, it has a brush-less motor (at least not easily replaced. I'll have to take it apart and see. Replacement motors I have seen have been from $265-290. A new unit is $199. I somewhat understand, but am never happy when a replacement part is either 'no longer available from manufacturer' .. or cost more than the entire unit. I feel I pretty much 'broke even' on the deal for the amount I used it .. it doesn't owe me anything.. but is annoying it isn't cost effective to 'keep running'. Off to find a different one.....

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Design Change I bought this sander based on the positive reviews. My friend has one, and it operates very nicely. I believe that the positive reviewers have had a good experience with their products. I suggest that there have been some short cuts taken in production that make this tool less desirable than it used to be. Right out of box, the belt system vibrates. Channel lock pliers are required to remove the nut that holds the assembly in place. This is due to poorly machined, and toleranced parts. Specifically the hold down nut and spindle threads. I was impressed with the smooth operation of the one I saw in action at my friends shop. The one I have is not near as good. As another reviewer said. : Design Change. Too bad. I was really looking forward to a positive ownership experience.

It has a nice weight to it, was easy to set up. I've only used it a little, but has performed great. If you order it online, getting the lifetime warranty can be a hassle. I thought I had provided the correct info but then got an email stating i hadn't. this is what they said: Unfortunately, we encountered an issue when cross referencing your product and/or proof of purchase information with our records and were unable to upgrade your products to Lifetime Service Agreement (LSA) status. This is what they want to have MAILED to them:1. Original receipt,2. Print out this email showing your customer ID number. Rated 1 out of 5 by from 40lb Paperweight I bought this tool based on the good reviews on this website and the review it got from Fine Woodworking magazine. I got it back to the shop, set it up and plugged it in. The motor immediately seized up and started smoking. Nothing I could see would have caused this. No shipping bolts, nothing obstructing the spindle, everything was properly set up. Figured it was a fluke. Returned the defective sander to Home Depot and had them plug in another of the same sander in the store to make sure it worked before exchanging. Same thing happened. Motor seized up right out of the box and started smoking. This may have been a good product at one time, but they simply don't work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible time saver and easy to use. I don't own the machine because my friend beat me to it, but he insisted I use it as my own. I used it to shape-sand 18 pieces of 3/4" plywood that I cut for a wine rack in a pattern I devised to eliminate waste cutoffs by cutting them on my band saw. The band saw work took two hours; the sanding using the Ridgid Oscillating Spindle sander took me 30-minutes and was perfect. My friend doesn't want me to buy one of these sanders because he wants me to use his equipment so that he can use my fly-fishing drift boat. The sander is incredibly easy to use and control. I still want my own!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from oscillating motion stopped! thunking noise if your rigid sander stops oscillating the fix may take 10 mins. Remove 4 Phillips screws to remove bottom. Vacuum dust away so that you can keep dust out of next step. Use a 3/8 socket on an extension to remove the plastic housing on bottom of motor. look for any broke gear teeth and that the three long prongs are intact. if everything looks fine. then look to see if the two plates are connected by all the prongs (6-8? didn't count) . just separate the disks and insert the prongs in the sockets. reassemble and mine works fine again.

I tried to purchase a replacement part from Rigid and was told this is an old discontinued product and they don't make the plastic replacement part I need. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wouldn't want to be without it I thought I was looking for a combination belt / disk sander when I found this and went with it instead. After having owned it for over a year and used it many times, I wouldn't want to be without it.. The way the belt sander part is perpendicular to the working surface makes sanding squared edges and controlling the stock / material fairly easy. It seems to make more sense, especially for woodworking, to have a perpendicular belt sander to do sand edges than to try to use a perpendicular rotating disk (like some combo sanders have) that doesn't go with the grain of the wood. I'm sure it can be frustrating for some to slowly / carefully adjust the belt sander so that the belt tracks correctly (as stated in some reviews), but to me it's fairly easy with this product - easier than others with others I've used, and not problematic in the least. I also like that the belt size this unit uses are fairly inexpensive. Well thought out, well designed sander.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not happy I am surprised with the amount of positives I have heard with this machine. As a spindle sander it is fine, with the exception of the hinge up table not being level. That at least I can adjust. The oscillating belt sanding attachment however, is pure garbage. It has never tracked properly no matter what adjustments I have made. Sometimes it decides to ride up, then sometimes rides down. I am certainly not pleased with that aspect, and therefore could never recommend this to anyone. There are plenty of decent dedicated spindle sanders on the market, and this unit in my shop functions as only that, due to the tracking error.. I have been building stringed instruments for over 30 years, so I am not a novice woodworker.
