How many pieces per bag?

Asked by Steve June 14, 2021

Answers

Dear Steve: There are 12 batts in each bag, which covers 59.7 sq. ft.. Rock wool is an excellent insulation solution, with R-4.1 per inch of thickness and fire resistance. The fibers are irritating like fiberglass, however, so wear gloves and a good dust mask when you install it. I hope this is helpful. Mark

can i use this product in ceiling joists?

Answers

Dear Jay: Yes, Rock wool is ideal for insulating ceiling and floor joists, with R-4.1 per inch of thickness and fire resistance. You can also order different thicknesses to match the height of your joists, e.g. 6", 8" and 10". Hold the batts in place with Simpson insulation wire. See: Simpson Model #IS16-R100, Home Depot Internet #100375163, UPC Code #044315396618, Store SKU #594333 The fibers are irritating like fiberglass, so wear gloves and a good dust mask when you install it. I hope this is helpful, Mark

What is the R value of this product

Asked by Pete May 11, 2021

Answers

Pete and Home Depot - the community response below is incorrect. Rockwool do not brand or publish the R value for SafenSound as interior partitions have no R value requirement for code. However we do test the product and it will provide an R3.9 per inch of thickness. Note its only a 3" thickness. If this is a 2 x 4 exterior wall stud framing it will not fill the 3.5" cavity depth and approx R11 may not be high enough to meet code requirement

Does the Rockwool R-15 stone wool insulation for 2x4 exterior wall provide the same STC as the Sa...

Answers

COMFORTBATT® being the same base materials, will provide sound absorption properties, however has not tested for acoustic performance and so “STC” in assemblies or “NRC” is not available. 3.5” COMFORTBATT® is expected to perform similarly to 3” AFB® or SAFEnSOUND® due to the nature of the product. For more details email us at contactus@rockwool.com

Why is it listed here if I can't order it? Do I have to order a pallet? Frustrating.

For acoustic panels please review our video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa5l5LRwl3w and note its typically Comfortboard 80 used which is a 2 x 4 dimension... though you could use the batt product in 24" dimension as an option. Batts are available for either 16" or 24" oc dimensions

Is it ok to leave this uncovered in ceiling joists? I want to install in semi finished home gym/t...

Asked by dr January 15, 2021

Answers

Dear DR: NO -- particularly for a gym. Rockwool fibers are itchy and irritating, and definitely not something you want to inhale. We always wear professional dust masks when we install it, plus gloves and a Tyvek 'painter's suit' for larger jobs. You don't need to cover it with much, e.g. 1/2" drywall. Also note, however, that sound reduction is difficult and more than 'Safe 'n Sound' is required. For example, are any HVAC ducts shared with the rooms above? Air flow = sound flow. You could also significantly reduce sound by doubling-up the drywall on the ceiling. Install the first layer and seal all of the joints and perimeter carefully. Then install a second layer of drywall. Cover each new sheet with 2 full tubes of DAP 230 sealant. Then fasten the new sheet with a few long screws into the joists, pressed against the first layer. Again, seal all of the joints and perimeter to block air / sound leaks. Make sure the second layer panels do not contact the walls, and fill the gap between the wall and ceiling with DAP 230. Let the DAP 230 cure for 48 hours, then remove the screws. This will create a rubbery / resilient layer between the two layers of drywall ceiling, which will reduce sound transmission. I hope this is helpful. Mark

I installed these in an extra room and used some other soundproofing building techniques combined with it. It is a world of difference. I went on to make hanging sound absorption panels than also helped deaden the room. Excellent product and easy to work with.

Understand what it does
This is a great product. I used it to soundproof a server room in my garage. I double walled all 4 sides and the roof. Living room is on the other side of the wall and with 20 servers screaming, I hear nothing inside. A great product if you under Sound absorption VS sound isolation.

I installed 20 bags in complete remodel in Florida. The product we easy to cut, install and shape as needed. Since this is my "forever" home (right now) I soundproofed every wall in a 3000 sq. ft. single story home. I also foamed the roof so I need to be careful to only use the product in a couple of bedrooms to insure proper conditioned attic space. Then applied 5/8" fire proof drywall throughout the house. Let me say - you don't hear a thing from one room to the next.

I used this in the floor joists between my kids' playroom and my home office. I'm fairly certain it does nothing to absorb the sound because I can hear my kids talking (and worse, stomping) above. This was used in conjunction with resilient channels and 1/2" drywall.

The product will provide sound dampening in this application. Note that sound will travel through any gap in a wall or floor/ceiling system. If you have hardwood floors, the purpose of the RC Channel when correctly installed will decouple the drywall from the wood framing which will assist with the impact sound you advise. rockwool

Easy to work with
I chose safe and sound to insulate our son’s room that we were building. He gets loud when he games online with his friends and we needed sound proofing that was inexpensive and easy to install. I love the product. Very easy to work with which was great because I’m a novice at home renovation.

This product does not do even close to its 50% rating. You can still hear everything. This is good for far away misc. noises.. but conversations, radio playing, tv, and other loud noises - forget about it.. it goes right through. I must have bought $3000 of this product to do (2) apartments.. in the walls, double layered in the floor and ceilings.. it did minimal sound protection from the neighbors next door. It’s a way overpriced product for about 30% of what it claims to do. If you want to soundproof a wall.. stagger the wood party studs, add resilient channels with a rubber backing, use quietrock 530 series ( yes.. the expensive one) laminate it with 5/8” Sheetrock with greenglue compound in between. This is a severely overpriced product!!

Works GREAT, totally keeps sound out, of course if you knock on the wall you're going to hear that. I used it in the bathroom to keep embarrassing "bathroom" sounds from escaping thru to a common area. It's easier to install than fiberglass because its stiffer and easier to cut and shape by using just a bread knife or maybe even a serrated steak knife. It is a lot more itchy than fiberglass so use long a sleeve shirt, gloves and also a mask as there are rock particles that come off of it while installing and cutting. I don't like how its described on the website, it should say that there are 12 bats of 3"x15 1/4 x 47" or a total of 564" or 47 feet of length. It seems really expensive when you just say that its 3x15 1/4 x 47" for around $50 (seems like its for only one piece) which almost deterred my from purchasing it.
