SAFEnSOUND will provide an R3.9 per inch..... we have a STD letterhead available confirming this testing. Note at 3" (Approx R11) it may not be high enough to meet you code requirement. For further response please email direct contactus@rockwool.com Also note this is used as an interior batt, pressure fit between wood or steel stud framing members in interior partition walls and floor / ceilings

You can add ROCKWOOL as an option if you have the cavity depth space to accommodate the thickness of the ROCKWOOL batt. If adding place the ROCKWOOL batt below as its denser oversized material and has a pressure fit. This will support the lighter material above

Use for firestopping

I'm in no way involved with Roxul. But if it were me, since this is for fire-stopping, I'd use the 3" and stuff it. If it were soundproofing, then I'd use the 2" because compression decreases the sound-proofing.

most are using for sound but I need for fire , is this product good for a 2 hours fire stop ?

My wife did not believe that this product would not burn, so I started a large fire in our 6 foot round fire pit then took a 12 in by 12 in piece of safe and sound and threw it in with the hot coals and fire. When we came out the next day the only thing left were the wood ashes and 12 inch by 12 inch piece of safe and sound. When I picked it up out of the pit it was still warm and the side that touched the hot coals was singed and black with very little damage to the piece. She was impressed and so was I, slowly putting it in all my interior walls.

The packaging is thin plastic so the height is 47.5" or so, Width is about 25" and the depth is about 15.25 and a bit more. You can squish it a bit...but not a lot. I was proudly able to put 5 in my 1990 Honda Civic Hatch-back, but only 6 in my 1995 Honda Odessey van. One of them fit easily in the passengers seat and no one else was with me at the time. Though I believe I could have fit one more in the van if I tried harder. :-) I hope this helps.

Can you staple this or is it too thick/hard?

Asked by calva March 14, 2017

Answers

You can staple through this. It's 3" thick and you can compress it. But if you compress it so that you can staple it, you won't get the sound proofing qualities it offers. If you're wondering if it will remain up on its own between 2 joists that are 16" on center the answer is yes. I have batts of it sitting between 2 joists in the basement ceiling. They have been there for 8 months and they are holding their position. Nothing is falling down. I hope this helps.

I used this in the floor joists between my kids' playroom and my home office. I'm fairly certain it does nothing to absorb the sound because I can hear my kids talking (and worse, stomping) above. This was used in conjunction with resilient channels and 1/2" drywall.

The product will provide sound dampening in this application. Note that sound will travel through any gap in a wall or floor/ceiling system. If you have hardwood floors, the purpose of the RC Channel when correctly installed will decouple the drywall from the wood framing which will assist with the impact sound you advise. rockwool

Easy to work with
Customer review from rockwool.com logo
I chose safe and sound to insulate our son’s room that we were building. He gets loud when he games online with his friends and we needed sound proofing that was inexpensive and easy to install. I love the product. Very easy to work with which was great because I’m a novice at home renovation.

This product does not do even close to its 50% rating. You can still hear everything. This is good for far away misc. noises.. but conversations, radio playing, tv, and other loud noises - forget about it.. it goes right through. I must have bought $3000 of this product to do (2) apartments.. in the walls, double layered in the floor and ceilings.. it did minimal sound protection from the neighbors next door. It’s a way overpriced product for about 30% of what it claims to do. If you want to soundproof a wall.. stagger the wood party studs, add resilient channels with a rubber backing, use quietrock 530 series ( yes.. the expensive one) laminate it with 5/8” Sheetrock with greenglue compound in between. This is a severely overpriced product!!

Works GREAT, totally keeps sound out, of course if you knock on the wall you're going to hear that. I used it in the bathroom to keep embarrassing "bathroom" sounds from escaping thru to a common area. It's easier to install than fiberglass because its stiffer and easier to cut and shape by using just a bread knife or maybe even a serrated steak knife. It is a lot more itchy than fiberglass so use long a sleeve shirt, gloves and also a mask as there are rock particles that come off of it while installing and cutting. I don't like how its described on the website, it should say that there are 12 bats of 3"x15 1/4 x 47" or a total of 564" or 47 feet of length. It seems really expensive when you just say that its 3x15 1/4 x 47" for around $50 (seems like its for only one piece) which almost deterred my from purchasing it.

Great Purchase and Easy Install!
Customer review from rockwool.com logo
Wow! I purchased 30 bags of the ROCKWOOL Safe 'n' Sound and was able to install it all by myself. I calculated that many bags on Rockwool's bag calculator on their website! Very accurate.. This product was very easy to install. Cutting around outlets, wires, and pipes was like cutting bread. Before the drywall went up, I could already tell a difference. I put the Safe 'n' Sound around all my laundry room, bathrooms, bedrooms, and in the basement ceiling. Not only does it provide sound proofing, it has other benefits as well. Such as fire resistant and no mildew can grow on it. I am so glad my builder let me install this product on my own. Would I recommend this product? Yes, 100%.

Exactly the product we wanted and needed!
Customer review from rockwool.com logo
We are renovating a 110-year-old stone carriage house. Rockwool has been our salvation for many reasons: exceptional thermal efficiency, super sound blocking, and mice hate it! Easy to install. We wrapped our new enameled steel tub with Rockwool for added insulation; my love of hot baths appreciates the extra 30 minutes I can spend reading in my tub before bed! And best of all, it has a low carbon footprint. Everything to gain when we opted for Rockwool instead of the irritating pink fluff.

Having to build the wall and adding the roxul plus, sheetrock wasn't worth the cost, labor or the slight reduction in sound. I never knew people could use so many cuss words at their children. Really disturbing!
