I am using this in the basement ceiling does it have to be covered with drywall?
Asked by: Jess
Insulation in the basement ceiling will aid in sound dampening as well as insulating. If you are trying to acoustically isolate two spaces you also need to add mass to the wall or floor (layers of gypsum board) depending on how much acoustic separation you want you will need more mass. Leave an air space between the insulation and one side of the wall or floor. Additionally the added layers of gyp. bd will provide a fire separation. Check your local code if a fire rated ceiling is required for basements. I have added it to my ground floor ceiling for insulation and sound dampening. I hated hearing people walk upstairs on the wood floors.

Thanks for your answer. I was referring more to using it as insulation in the walls, so it would be covered by sheet rock on both sides.

This is a great product, After reading a couple of reviews and how this product did not work for them per soundproofing and not worth the money really needs to take a step back and look at the benefits. 1. Its easy to install 2. Its a green product and made from natural materials 3. It is mildew, water, and helps with the spread of fire 4. Its healthier than inhaling glass particles that your AC unit can be sucking in-between your walls. As for soundproofing, this one product will not block all noise. There are other factors that need consideration, another would be the use of sheetrock.... 1. Did you seal every corner in addition to any gaps between studs, etc. In other words air seal the entire room from top to bottom. Meaning up in the attic as well? There are a lot of steps to fully soundproofing a room and if you missed the most essential the only person to give a negative review is yourself for not doing proper research.

We had all of the old insulation (only about 4" worth) vacuumed out so we could get the house re-wired. Then my husband and I went up there with Rockwool to reinsulate. Bear in mind, not all of our bays were standard--many were 14-15", but we had plenty at 12", 4", 2"(!) and such. We have no eaves, no overhangs, no soffits, so no need for attic baffles since there's no air coming up. EASE OF INSTALLATION: We put down the 3-1/2" R15 between the joists. All of the I'm-never-going-to-do-this-again areas got THIS product (~R12) on top of the first layer, perpendicular to the original layer, and then a third layer. Some areas will only get the R15 because we want to put down subfloor for access; the rest get the second layer also. Now, I'm NOT a handyperson, that's my wonderful husband. I'm the assistant. But being shorter, I was designated to crawl over joists/under rafters to reach all the ends, sometimes stretched out along the length of the joist. I took a broom up to the attic to help push the batts as far down as possible, both vertically and down the bays. We got to one point, a valley in the roof. I couldn't reach to get a batt in there AND be able to push the batt DOWN into place, so husband took over. But there was one end of a bay that was really oddly shaped, like a trapezoid. We knew the batt fit the bay across; I told my husband to measure length along the left and right sides of the bay. I measured that out on a batt, cut the angle, and handed it to my husband--this product is so easy to use, my puzzle piece fit perfectly. EFFECTS OF VARIOUS AMOUNTS OF INSULATION: Due to further electrical work being done, some portions still have NO insulation at all. While not good in some ways, it IS allowing us to see the actual effects of various amounts of insulation. On a 100 F day, the north side of the house with THREE layers (R15+R12+R12) read about 78 F from the inside of the house; portions with TWO layers read 80 F. Not too much different, really, for the THIRD layer. On the south side of the house, where there are solar panels on parts of the roof, portions with THREE layers read about 79 F; portions with TWO layers vary from 80 to 82 F; portions with ONE layer vary from 83 to 86 F (we plan to add more but right now we need to cross that area); portions with NO insulation vary from 87 to 99 F (again, likely due to solar panels up above). From this, I'd say TWO layers of insulation (R27) is definitely the minimum required. The third layer had relatively little effect for the cost. Sorry this is so long. I just want you to know it's really not difficult to use and has a MAJOR effect.

After much research I chose ROXUL to sound proof a finished basement bedroom ceiling . Moving on to the lower family room now. This stuff works great. It won't stop sounds from dropped objects or banging but does a great job at blocking ambient noise. In the past I have used fiberglass acoustic insulation, it is no match to mineral wool. Best part is no dreaded itch that comes with fiberglass. Cuts easy with a serrated knife, and fits perfect between engineered joists.
