I am using this in the basement ceiling does it have to be covered with drywall?

I am using this in the basement ceiling does it have to be covered with drywall?
Asked by: Jess
Insulation in the basement ceiling will aid in sound dampening as well as insulating. If you are trying to acoustically isolate two spaces you also need to add mass to the wall or floor (layers of gypsum board) depending on how much acoustic separation you want you will need more mass. Leave an air space between the insulation and one side of the wall or floor. Additionally the added layers of gyp. bd will provide a fire separation. Check your local code if a fire rated ceiling is required for basements. I have added it to my ground floor ceiling for insulation and sound dampening. I hated hearing people walk upstairs on the wood floors.

Thanks for your answer. I was referring more to using it as insulation in the walls, so it would be covered by sheet rock on both sides.

ROCKWOOL Safe 'n' Sound 3 in. x 15-1/4 in. x 47 in. Soundproofing Stone Wool Insulation (12-Bags) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 431.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use, and effective for accoustic and fire security. I used Safe and Sound to finish a music studio and kitchen space, it was amazing and easy to use while still needed the typical fiberglass protection it installed much faster and I was able to cut it with an electric kitchen knife ( purchased for the application) and a japanese hand saw to get the perfect fit. It packs in quite snugly and stays in place without retention wires or stapling. It absorbed the bass freqencies effectively and paired with double drywall and rubber sheeting it met the specifications I needed. It has no odor or offgassing that is detectable, especially compared to spray foam, or fiberglass.

This is a great product, After reading a couple of reviews and how this product did not work for them per soundproofing and not worth the money really needs to take a step back and look at the benefits. 1. Its easy to install 2. Its a green product and made from natural materials 3. It is mildew, water, and helps with the spread of fire 4. Its healthier than inhaling glass particles that your AC unit can be sucking in-between your walls. As for soundproofing, this one product will not block all noise. There are other factors that need consideration, another would be the use of sheetrock.... 1. Did you seal every corner in addition to any gaps between studs, etc. In other words air seal the entire room from top to bottom. Meaning up in the attic as well? There are a lot of steps to fully soundproofing a room and if you missed the most essential the only person to give a negative review is yourself for not doing proper research.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safe N' Sound is the way to go for Sound Proofing! My boyfriend and I were remodeling the attic space in our 1950s home. The old insulation was gross and we were finishing the attic to be more useful. We did a TON of research to find something that could be used as sound proofing and we had no idea about Roxul. After watching many videos, it appeared to be the easiest thing to install and meet our needs. WE LOVE THE PRODUCT. It is SO MUCH EASIER and less messy than the pink rolled stuff! We knew we had to make a lot of cuts, since our joists were not 16 on center, and the serrated bread knife is the perfect tool. Would totally recommend this to anyone, do not waste your money on another product. For an added R Value, we also used Roxul ComfortBatt and blown in insulation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I used Roxul Comfort Batts to insulate a crawlspace. Friction fit (in between 2X6 floor joists) is perfect--stays put with no wires or other supports. Uniformity of size and stiffness of each batt (compared to fiberglass batts) allow for sharp corners, and elimination of gaps. Sound absorption is excellent. Exceeds fire code requirements. I also installed 1/2 foil-faced polyiso foam boards to the bottom of the joists in the crawlspace (covering the roxul), and then taped the joints. Lots of work to do the whole crawlspace (approximate 1,500 sf), but immediate and significant difference apparent inside--warmer floors, no echoing of footsteps, and the spin cycle on the washer in the laundry room--which used to vibrate/resonate through the whole house--is completely gone. I also did a research project recently, and discovered how the fact that we focus on "r-value" (ignoring air flow) and the use of fiberglass (ignoring rock wool) are due more to marketing than insulating performance properties. If you look at Europe, which was not subjected to marketing onslaught of US manufacturers, you find much more common usage of rock-wool, as opposed to fiberglass. I expect we will see a slow but steady surge in the adoption of rockwool over fiberglass here in the US. The product (at least not in the retail locations where I have to buy it as a non-contractor) is not cheap, but I think it's worth it. Easy 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing product We had a baby girl that was very sensitive to noise since the day she was born - she cried at all noises and would never settle. When we decided to move and build our dream home we decided that we needed to make our house quiet for our now 3 year old - we used ROXUL safe n' sound all around her bedroom and around other areas of the house and my daughter now sleeps soundly every night and is a much happier girl - thank you so much for making such a wonderful product that truly changed our lives and changed the life the of our little one :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Night and Day difference in sound and temperature I have used Safe 'n' Sound both in-wall and for sound absorption panels to mount on walls. It is amazing in both scenarios and there really isn't a product out there that works quite as well as Roxul/Rockwool's. You don't need insulation supports to hold it between studs since the tolerance is so dead-on. Fits snug every time. I always take a second look at the rolls of Corning fiberglass, but end up telling myself, just wait and save a few more bucks, then go with the Roxul.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safe N Sound is Awesome! My boyfriend and I were remodeling the attic space in our 1950s home. The old insulation was gross and we were finishing the attic to be more useful. We loved the quality of Roxul as we had used the safe and sound previously. Knowing we needed a higher R rating, we chose ComfortBatt as our preferred insulation. It is SO MUCH EASIER and less messy than the pink rolled stuff! We knew we had to make a lot of cuts, since our joists were not 16 on center, and the serrated bread knife is the perfect tool. Would totally recommend this to anyone, do not waste your money on another product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Make your DIY easy As a female using this for my first DIY basement development, I was quite nervous. This product was extremely easy to work with and made me feel quite confident in completing my insulation job! The prices were affordable, which added peace of mind when it comes to the budget of this home project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish this had been available earlier We had to remove our floors (1st floor with a basement beneath) down to the joists. They were never insulated and they were not solid. We laid the Safe'n'Sound in between the joists and could tell a difference in the echo in the room immediately....even before we put furniture back in. My daughter's room was very cold as well because of the corner it's on. This has made a huge difference already. Her room is much cozier. I wish this had been available when we did the public rooms of the house a few years ago. Our bedroom is directly above the electric panel so the fact that this is fire resistant gives me a extra measure of safety. Anytime you can gain a few seconds to get out of a house it may save your life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product does what is says I used Roxul Safe and Sound in our basement walls and ceiling to give our new basement nice and quiet walls. We hardly hear anything from upstairs and that is the way we like it. A good product all around.

After much research I chose ROXUL to sound proof a finished basement bedroom ceiling . Moving on to the lower family room now. This stuff works great. It won't stop sounds from dropped objects or banging but does a great job at blocking ambient noise. In the past I have used fiberglass acoustic insulation, it is no match to mineral wool. Best part is no dreaded itch that comes with fiberglass. Cuts easy with a serrated knife, and fits perfect between engineered joists.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Peace & Quiet During construction of a new home, we installed Safe N Sound in the stud bays of the floor and walls of an upstairs master bedroom. The Safe N Sound cuts easily with a standard bread knife and is not messy or itchy like fiberglass. The batts are made of a springy material that simply pushes into place between the studs and stays there without any fasteners. The results were immediately evident, as the sounds from all surrounding rooms were muffled when inside the master bedroom. This is exactly what was needed in a house with a big family with noisy kids and common area/den occupying the lower floor. Great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roxul saved our basement I am using this in my basement. At first, I didn't know what product to use wondering if everything I heard and saw in videos was just a hoax (you know, pay a contractor to advertise your product for kick backs?!) I searched through my photos of the work that was done on my main floor and saw that the contractor didn't use Roxul. He has up and vanished so not much I can do now. But, after much debate (with myself) and watching MANY YouTube videos, I decided to go with what my gut told me and it was ROXUL! I am using the SnS and the Thermal for my little ~400sq.ft basement. I need to rent it out so I want the renter to be a.) safe and sound b.) comfortable c.) comfy and cozy and d.) not to hear me and my son upstairs :) It was so easy to use and yes, using my KitchenAid bread knife made it so much easier!! Thank you for making such a great product that is safe and reliable and easy to use! I can't afford to hire a contractor to finish my whole basement, so I am doing as much as I can with the help of my videos and my 67-year old Italian father :) Buying a 92-year old was a good idea...on paper >:I THANK YOU!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roxul saved me I can't begin to say how much I love this product. I recently found out that I have meniere's disease. It's a disease that affects the inner ear. I've become extremely sensitive to loud sounds which made me leave my career as a red seal Carpenter. With 4 kids running around the house I found it difficult to find a quiet spot when the noise became too much for me to handle. I tore my bedroom walls open and filled it with roxul and now I can finally get some peace when I need it. Thank you roxul

Rated 5 out of 5 by from such a difference! I own a duplex, and the shared wall noise was awful! I could clearly hear what my neighbor was watching on TV. Installed this and its barely a muffle. Friends visit and can't believe the difference. I did the 1st floor living room wall, and you would think the neighbor wasn't home. But in the 2nd floor hallway (same wall) you can hear everything on her side clearly. People are amazed what a difference it makes!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really deadens sound! We used this excellent product to insulate our media room / music room and soundproof it too. Wow! It really deadens the sound ! Now we can play our guitars and drums and sing as loud as we want as late as we want and not disturb anyone. Also, if I want to go to bed earlier, my husband and his friends can be as loud as they want and I can still sleep soundly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Muffle the noise from the other room I am a convert. My builder buddy told me about this product 6 years ago. I haven't used fiberglass since. Because it supports its weight, the work needed to secure it is drastically reduced. I've even installed it horizontally without sag. This stuff is amazing.
Date published: 2018-03-12
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good and Bad Easy to install - because batts are shorter - and easy to cut. It stays in the ceiling without support. The air in the Roxul space does not echo, that's probably the source of the "soundproofing" claim. This does not stop other noise from coming in. I cannot speak to its waterproofing or fire resistant claims. I neither soaked it or burned it. lol

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product. Dense. Sound deadening. Used in basement job. Ceiling application. Easy to cut. Notice the warmth difference. Not done whole basement yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is an excellent product I placed the product in our home as the contractor was finishing the framing and before the sheet rock went up. The house began to be quieter as each wall was completed with the Roxul. I believe this will make our house quieter and safer from fires because of the thickness of the Roxul Safe and Sound product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much better than fiberglass! I am a musician who wants to use my home to record music. After researching soundproofing options, the sound proofing qualities of Roxul Safe'n'Sound seemed like the way to go. I was already in the middle of a home renovation, so while I had drywall ripped out and walls opened up, I decided to fill interior wall spaces between certain rooms with the Safe'n'Sound. It was so easy to use; much easier than fiberglass batts. I love that I can use a serrated bread knife to slice through these Roxul batts with ease. They really do reduce sound waves traveling between rooms. As a really amazing bonus, I love the fact that these can stand up to extremely high amounts of heat. This gives me much more peace of mind, knowing they would hopefully buy me more time in the event I ever have a house fire.
