Q:does non fiberglass insulation cause skin irritation like regular fiberglass?
    by|Mar 10, 2023
    2 Answers
    Answer This Question

A:  All insulation is fibrous material which is what causes the skin irritation as it gets into the pours of your skin. ROCKWOOL has been known to cause less irritation than our fiberglass competitors, but since it is a fibrous material it can still cause skin irritation for some people. The best way to limit the exposure is to where long sleeves, cover your skin in baby powder or to have a cold shower after the insulation installation. The cold shower will keep your pours closed and allow the fibers to be washed away from your body while a warm shower will open your pours giving the fibers a better opportunity to imbed themselves in your skin causing further irritation.

A:  No, the glass fibers in fiberglass insulation cause the irritation, rockwool insulation will not cause this problem. Mike

        Answer This Question

A:  With regards to your recent inquiry regarding the thermal resistance (R-value) of ROCKWOOL SAFE’n’SOUND® when tested by Intertek to ASTM C665-06, report no. 100364335TOR-001B, the thermal resistance is R3.9 per inch. 3" = R10.7 However, ROCKWOOL SAFE 'n' SOUND is not designed for its thermal performance, it is designed for interior wall/floor/ceiling to reduce noise transfer and to be part of a firestop assembly from room to room. If you are looking for exterior wall insulation we have several R-Value thermal products that can be purchased that are specifically for for exterior wall use.

Went from a few walls to the whole house
Hey everyone. My name is Chris. We're building a house and I'm addicted to installing interior insulation. It started with insulating the walls between rooms. Then I thought, "We should do the ceilings above our bedroom and bathroom, which is under the loft and our son's room." Then it was, "What if someone goes upstairs to use the bathroom and we're having a fancy dinner party and hear them above?" Then it was, "If I do the ceiling for that reason, we might as well do around all of the bathrooms." "If I'm going that far, I should do every area that makes sense because there isn't much left." As soon as the insulation went in you could the dampening of the sound in the room. We haven't moved in yet, but I'm very satisfied with the change already even before drywall. After we move in we'll also do the basement ceiling. Great product!

                Easy to work with.
Used this product for the first time on a renovation project. It was very easy to work with and the installation went very fast. It cuts very easily with a bread knife and fits perfect between studs or ceiling joists. I would definitely used this product again. Also cuts down on the inside noise level.

                  Durable
We used Rockwool for under our slab, all our walls and attic. We added 2" of Comfortboard 80 on the outside of the house as well. We had it exposed to the weather for months as our build took forever. It was easier to cut than I expected but I recommend wearing long sleeves and safety glasses when installing as it gets itchy. I like that it stays in place when you used wall cavities and know I don't have to worry about any moisture ruining it.

                    Regret the purchase
Covered approximately 2400sqft basement ceiling with Rockwool. Measured the dB level, from my second-floor TVs, before and after the Rockwool install, hardly made a difference in reducing the noise. The representative at Rockwool recommended that I add a second layer of Rockwool or 2 layers of drywall with noise-reducing glue in between. Tried the 2 layers of drywall in two rooms, theater and bedroom, again.....hardly any difference. If you have vents, it will be difficult to block noise.

                        Safe and Sound for soundproofing
For my basement renovation, I've started to install Rockwool Safe 'n' Sound for the interior wall and ceiling cavities. The installation process could not be any easier, using a measuring tape and an old bread knife to make the necessary cuts. I've already noticed a big difference in soundproofing between rooms and floors, which will be even better when I finish my home theatre room!

                            Rockwool Review
I have used safe and sound in splitting houses into two legal dwellings (upstairs and downstairs). After installing Rockwool Safe and Sound you can really hear the sound suppression and even feel the acoustics of the room lessen. We have had upstairs tenants down the road say how they don’t even hear the downstairs tenant at all. I have also worked in basements in the winter time and have experienced the temperature difference from a basement with and another without Rockwool. I would and have recommended Rockwool safe and sound to customers as well as friends and family.

                              I Rock?
Never installed insulation before, and now I ROCK with Rockwool. Started with a room, which then became a kitchen ceiling, travelled to the basement wall and ceiling. I’m hooked on Rockwool
