Can the snow thrower be used on a gravel driveway?

On a loose gravel driveway? Not recommended, you’d be hurling stones until the plastic impeller blades broke. I’ve hit a stone or 2 on our flagstone patio and have the “dings” to prove it.

Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. The thrower works very well, when used appropriately. It does a good job with 6 in of snow. As you likely expect from the photos, it throws the snow directly in front, so you do need to clear driveways or paths perpendicularly and in the same direction with the wind. I've used it a couple of times now and so far as I can tell it appears to be well constructed. I've hit a couple of hard packed snow patches and while the thrower doesn't handle those very well, there doesn't appear to be any damage as long as I pull back in those cases. I use it with my 40V battery powered trimmer motor and it does a great job. I can over a half hour of use out of the battery which is enough to clear my driveway and back walk (approximately 60 ft long combined). The only complaint, and it's minor, is that the thrower is kinda heavy which makes it hard to maneuver. But even so, it's easier than moving the same amount of snow.

Easy to use. 25 minutes on a 40V 3Ah throwing 2" of wet snow. Can clear same amount of snow as my 22" 2 stage because I can walk twice as fast. Just have to turn thrower about 10 degrees to throw the snow off to the side since no deflector, that's why 4 stars. but, the convenience out weight this deficiency. Highly recommend!

I ordered this attachment to provide a bit more capability than a snow shovel without having to pull out my gas-powered 2-stage snow blower for the smaller snowfalls we get from time to time. It arrived literally the day before 2 inches of wet snow fell. One 2.5AH 40V battery on the power head was enough to clear a 3-car driveway, the walkway to the door and the sidewalk. Two days later, we got about 5 inches of fluffy dry snow, and I decided to see again, and performance was about the same. The unit threw the snow about 6 feet forward as I moved, and did a good job scraping the snow directly off the concrete. Now for downs--not many but they are there-- due to the design, the weight is off center. That puts it directly in the front, but it takes getting used to. Also, as you move from one side to the other of the driveway, you're throwing snow onto the cleared part unless you angle the snow thrower a bit towards the uncleared part and run it at a kind of crabbed angle instead of straight. Because it's relatively light and small, in big snow storms, I expect to use it to clear things like the walkway up to the door while using the 2-stage for the big parts. Think of it kind of like a trimmer used with your lawn mower.

(What's this)
Looking at this you wouldn't think it was powerful at all. You'd be so wrong. Now it's not gas powered or corded but it packs a serious punch with it's 40 volt battery, which has a power indicator right there on the battery itself. It's powerful enough to push snow at least 5 to 6 feet out in front of you so plan your snow clean up accordingly. With fresh powder you can plow through it like butter. But with heavy snow I would recommend working in layers. It's lightweight and easy to store. I recommend putting it in a small storage box to avoid wet spots and sliding. Storing the snow thrower is super easy whether you plan one breaking it down or keep it together. I used it for the front walkway (small area). However, because of it's power you can use it for driveways as well (medium area). If you have the time you could also use it for larger areas. I really like how the handle can be adjusted for your comfort. And the double trigger is added safety that I truly appreciate. The blade on the thrower is plastic but this thing chews up snow and spits it out like it was nothing. So that's not even an extra concern. All in all I'm glad that I have it to make quick work of snow build up during the tough season.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
The Ryobi Snow Thrower attachment provides decent snow clearing power in awkward or hard to reach spaces. Our north-facing patio area is flagstone and is tough for traditional shoveling due to the uneven surface. This guy cut through 4 inches of light, powdery snow without issue, typically tossing a stream 10-15 feet. It's a non-directional discharge so plan your path and direction of work wisely. As a test, I made a 6-8" ridge of snow to power through and this tool spat it out just fine. Granted, this was the dry, fluffy February stuff; the late March or April wet stuff may be a different story. The trigger allows for variable speed which helped keep the discharge from going over the 6 foot privacy fence. This is an Expand-It Attachment so you need the base motor from the String Trimmer to power it. I wondered how well the big 40V battery would do and wasn't disappointed; cleared approximately 600 square feet of area and the battery was still at half charge (that's including the proverbial learning curve time too). When done, there were signs of wear on the blades but wasn't surprised since I was working on a non-smooth flagstone area. But if parts need to be replaced in 3-5 years, it'll be worth it. Between the battery, drive motor and snow thrower attachment, it weighs in between 15 and 20 pounds and a shade over 5 feet tall. The weight is distributed fairly evenly and the balance isn't bad when using. Averaged out, maneuvering this snow thrower is certainly less work than manually shoveling. And yes, it was kinda fun too... The unit breaks down well for storage. Each attachment has a cap to protect the power transfer shaft that doubles as a hanger too (somebody in Design was thinking!). So, with a little rearranging of the pegboard hooks, the drive motor, snow thrower and string trimmer attachments are hung up and out of the way.

(What's this)
Ryobi Expand-It Snow Thrower Attachment provides additional functionality for those with a Ryobi 40-Volt X Expand-it capable trimmer. The trimmer end can be unclipped and this snow thrower attachment added by inserting it into the handle and it then runs on the same motor and battery to power it. My neighbor has another brand of corded power snow shovel costing twice the price as this attachment and I was thinking of getting one for those areas that I can't get to with my snow thrower. Its designed for clearing driveways, walkways and decks. Also, using it for small snow falls is easier than setting up my snow thrower. The manual reads it can move up to four inch of snow at a pass, but much above that amount is where a big snow thrower works best; although, you can take multiple passes on higher amounts. This attachment has a 12-inches wide blade made of polyurethane with a six inch deep impeller. It weights all of 18-pounds for the attachment, battery and handle head piece and the assembled tool is about five feet in length. The thrower is not directional so you need to plan where the snow is going on your property and the angle you plow it. It doesn't have wheels you hold it off the ground. The recommended position is to hold the handle at hip height, right hand on the trigger and the other hand on the guiding handle. The weight makes it easy to hold, its balanced, as you move along angling the power shovel to get the best snow loft and direction. My shovel came with a second black auxiliary handle that I mounted on the pole in a comfortable position as the instructions make no mention of it, providing more ways to hold it The Ryobi shovel takes a little getting used to, the narrow swat it clears and the overall feel. The snow shovel worked well enough for path clearing, its best for this use. I see it more as an another shovel among several different ones I have in the garage. It stores in the garage with a provided hanger cap for wall mounting. Each shovel is different and for a particular use in my arsenal and this one fits a need nicely.
