how easily does this bind up? currently useing an old delta 1/3 hp combo sander that binds up and stops spining on anything more then light pressure and i want to get my own before i have another sanding project and break a sander that isnt even mine
Asked by: rick
I've had this for three years now and it hasn't bound up on me at all. Having said that, I use it for a range of things from cleaning the ends of metal angle iron to smoothing out small wood cut pieces. If by binding you mean the long bed wrapping up in the unit, the adjustment dial works very well. It took a bit to dial it in and find center on the belt, but once in it hasn't needed adjusting.

is it normal to make a rumbling noise when using the belt

it makes rumbling noise when applying pressure
Asked by: judge911
This sander uses an induction motor. The only way to vary the speed is to change the input frequency. Household AC power is 60hz. Don't try it.

Can you use it to sand/grind metal??

Asked by: Mac
I would say no. It’s really more of a finishing tool. And it isn’t that heavy duty. You may be able to sand metal but I would say no to grinding other than something light weight.

Can you use a variable speed controller with this sander?
Asked by: Belizondo
To the bast of my belief the sander does not have a variable speed control. If it does, I haven't found it yet.

Customer Reviews

120-Volt Bench Sander is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 221.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best in class. This is an excellent little unit for the money. Tracking was easy to adjust and once set held its adjustment. The motor is very quiet. It doesn’t stall unless you are pressing too hard, but any belt sander will do that if used improperly. The factory belt was quite effective but I added an 80 grit Diablo belt and this thing came alive. The controls are laid out well. The cast iron base keeps the machine firmly rooted, though for large jobs you could bolt it down. The disc sander is useful as the included miter gauge lets you refine your angles precisely. The belt can be set vertically or horizontally, adding to the machine’s utility. There is very little plastic in this thing and it feels surprisingly robust. I cannot speak to the durability as I haven’t had it that long but I would be surprised if it doesn’t last for most DIYers. This is a really good product for the money if you know how to use a belt sander. If you don’t no tool will suffice. I even used it to flatten sone surfaces and was surprised I got them squared completely. With this type of tool, technique is everything. If you use finesse instead of brute force, you will get excellent results. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Buy First off: I'm a weekend warrior when it comes to wood working. Love to do it, but still learning. This is my first Stationary Sander, and have used it for a few days now. I did put on a Diablo 120grit belt for my finish sanding. Price-one of the least expensive units I have seen Size- not too big, allows me to store it away when not in use. Ease of use-So much easier sanding a lot of parts before assembly now. (used to sit down with an electric hand sander and make a huge mess). Easy to change belts, and reconfigure belt to vertical position. 4x36in size belt is a good size work surface, easy to put pieces up there and gets them smooth fast. Cons: Let me use it a little longer and I will update, none so far. Overall I am very happy. It makes short work of something that used to be the longest part of some of my builds. If I had to do it over again, I would still buy this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy for the $$ I’ve had this for a couple months now and really like it! Is it perfect? No... but for $150, I am happy. Not sure who the muscley beasts are who are bogging it down, but I haven’t had that problem. I’ve applied plenty of pressure, worked on some heavy hardwoods like bubinga, Purple Heart and wenge... Also have ground some metal. No bogging. it burnt the wood slightly but didn’t stop it. Changing the position of the belt sander is a pain and the miter slide for the disc is made of plastic and not very smooth - but again, for a buck fifty, i doubt you can find anything better. No buyers regret. I like it, it sands well, dust collection is ok. I would have bought it sooner if I knew it would work as well as it does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive, durable tool I purchased this unit specifically for sanding and shaping blocks for Giant Jenga sets, popular items in the forever summer we have in Florida. Prior to purchasing, I used the hand held ONE+ belt sander for this application. What used to take me at least 2-3 hours, now takes me 45 minutes or less. On days where we are producing 5,6,7+ sets this little machine is a huge time savor, and one of the best investments I made to the shop. I have had this unit for a little over a year, and have run it for hours at a time with no breaks, and it is still going strong. Unbelievable quality, fantastic price, the only complaint I have is in the belt that it comes with. Mine was chewed up pretty quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Quality than I expected! I debated on whether to buy this one or jump to a really expensive JET brand. I only woodwork as a hobby and not serious enough about it to spend $400 on a sander. I was worried about the quality of the Ryobi and went back and forth in my mind for a while on whether to purchase it. Well I walked into Home Depot shortly before Christmas and picked it up. This thing works great ! I have been sanding a lot of wood work on it and I have had 0 issues. It is powerful yet not deafening. Some people complained in other reviews on previous models that the belt tracking was off and the belt always moved to one side. I also had this problem, until I followed the directions and adjusted the belt tracking. now it stays right in the center and doesn't move. I am really glad that I bought this, so much so that I signed in here to write the review. Thanks for the great value Ryobi on a nice product.

Operates like a belt sander in a home-made jig but a little fancier and much easier to set up. The miter gauge table can be mounted for use with either the sanding belt or sanding disc. The included 80-grit sanding belt and disc are a little excessive so I bought 120-grit for replacements and now it works fine. I wouldn't buy it for a professional cabinet-making shop because too much pressure will make the machine bog down (as in stop). It does everything I want it to do. A friend actually recommended it to me!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Motor failed After about 10 uses, the motor failed. Threw the switch and it just hummed. Took it back to HD, they plugged it in, and it ran. Brought it home and it ran once, then went back into hum mode. Fortunately, HD made good on an exchange. Kudos to them for customer service. When it was working, the sander seemed to have a lot of vibration. Was expecting a smoother run. Am guessing that the disk is not truly round, or not centered on the spindle after the set screw is tightened. Otherwise, it did what a benchtop belt sander is supposed to do. For the money, I guess it's an OK tool...not horrible, but not what I expected from Ryobi. I have other Ryobi tools of better quality than this one. I read all the reviews here and on Amazon before buying...I know others have had good luck with this tool, and some don't like it. I can understand the mixed reviews. Pretty fair value, but make no mistake--it's an entry level tool.
