Does this saw has a chain brake? If not, why doesn't Ryobi care about operator safety?
Asked by: DB
You need to understand DC Motors. It is called dynamic braking. A Gasoline motor needs the brake a DC Motor does not. I service and rebuild DC Motor Systems.

How long does the battery last ?

Asked by: Gee
It depends on you, the job, the sharpness of the chain, and hardness of the wood. I cut 20 8" to 11" rounds in about 20 minutes and only used about 1/4 of the full charge. Forcing the chain into the wood will shorten battery life more than anything, let the tool do the work and I suspect you should get over an hour from a full charge, if you get a spare that's about how long it should take to charge it, giving you a short break every hour to swap and put the dead one on the charger, and be ready to go again.

does this Ryobi saw come with an extra blade ?
Asked by: kevin
You get one bar, and one chain. Enough to get you started. If you have a lot of cutting to do, a sharp chain is important. A second one might be a good idea, or better yet, get a sharpener and learn to use it. You can keep one chain effective for a long time.

Is it normal for chain to loosen every use? I’m not talking about blade heating. I am having to tighten the blade before every use while it’s cool.
Asked by: Kt4591
Yes... this is just one of the problems with this product... I had to cut 6 trees and in addition to the battery issue, as it didn't last to allow me cutting not even a whole tree, I had to keep tightening the chain every use, or sometimes 2 times in a cycle...

14 in. 40-Volt Brushless Lithium-Ion Cordless Chainsaw, 4 Ah Battery and Charger Included is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 524.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use. Cuts through as well as a gas powere Some time ago I borrowed a friends gas chain saw to do some minor trimming. After operating it for about five minutes I knew I shouldn’t be using it at all. Ended up hiring a landscaper to finish the job. Recently a storm blew down a large tree limb. Didn’t want to pay a contractor again. The Ryobi 14” inch 40V unit seemed like a good deal and more cost effective then a contractor. Was amazed at how easy it was to use. A lot more quieter than a gas unit. Didn’t seem like I even needed to use hearing protection. Following the basic operating instructions, I felt way more confident in using it then any gas powered saw. It cut through the fallen branch which was about 10” inches thick in some parts like it was butter. Only down side is that Ryobi doesn’t seem to sell too much in products that are tool only for the 40 V Li-Ion battery. Would like to see more products come to Market with having to buy another battery and charger. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Probably the best size bar in its class. The only improvement I'd make to it would be to use tool-less adjusting knobs (like a competing maker) rather than standard nuts for the bar adjustment. That being said, the on-board wrench makes the adjustment and cleaning easy, and probably allows a tighter fit. So maybe I wouldn't change it after all. :-) If you have other 40-volt Ryobi tools and need a chainsaw, this is a no-brainer. It's really not that much more money than another battery, especially if you catch it on sale. Easily plows through the jobs of a home owner/weekend warrior without a hiccup. If you're a lumberjack or need to cut cord after cord of firewood, a gas saw is still probably the better choice for speed and recharge/refuel time. An electric chainsaw just makes sense. They're so much easier to use than gas for the normal property owner. See my YouTube review at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZnsoNBgpSw

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Weird at first, but gets the job done I have several Ryobi 40V tools already, and I've been very happy with them. My old 16" gas chainsaw finally died, so I thought I'd try the Ryobi 40v Chainsaw (especially since it now comes with the 4AH battery). Like other electric tools, they seem weird at first, mostly because they are so quiet. But after using it, I was happy with the results. The only thing I didn't like is that it takes a couple seconds for the chain to get to full speed, compared to the almost-instant throttle response of a gas saw. If you cut wood for a living, this probably isn't the right tool for you. But if you're like me and only need to use it once or twice a year, you'll really enjoy the instant start and low maintenance of electric tools. I still get weird looks from my neighbors when I use them, but I get the last laugh when I see them having trouble getting their gas tools started. ;) [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

It was light weight and easy to maneuver while trimming branches. It had plenty of power to cut through even the 10 inch trunk. I hadn't started to charge the battery in time to start my project. But I have a Ryobi hedge trimmer that has a 40V 2Ah battery pack. It was interchangeable and worked on this chainsaw. I cut down the whole tree and cut up everything and didn't even use up the smaller battery. Quite impressed. I have to say that I have used a lot of gas powered saws when I was younger. I am 60 now. I didn't want to mess with the gas so I bought a battery powered saw. I did a lot of research and decided to buy the Ryobi because of the price and the size of jobs that I expect to do. It may not be quite as fast as some of the gas saws I have used. However, it was fast enough for me. It was easier to move around and hold at various angles than the bigger gas saws I used in the past. Easy to set up and to use. All I had to do was fill the chain oil reservoir and start cutting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought it with doubts, but very impressed after using. Bought this to replace an inexpensive 16" gasoline saw that has served me well for 11 years of light but frequent use with good care and feeding but finally wore the rings out. Despite my initial skepticism, this cordless 14" saw will in fact do anything I could ask a 14" gasoline saw to do except for runtime, but by the time I've run the battery down I need a recharge myself so the battery life is not an issue unless you need to use it for hours on end or won't be near a power source. If you need more working time, buy the $159 spare battery that comes in a long box with a free charger and weed whacker, then you will have a cordless weed whacker with two batteries when not using the saw. The onboard wrench storage is a nice feature and the lack of a functional chain brake is a non-issue as long as you are aware of it. It weighs a couple pounds more than a gas saw and the balance is farther forward but that only takes two minutes to get used to. Best part is no more yanking a rope starter or fighting with spoiled gas and fuel system deterioration.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value Did a lot of research on battery chainsaws from 18v to 80v, and decided the 40v was the right one for me an my light firewood gathering on my 7ac lot. The thing you need to understand about battery powered saws is that they work best if they can run without torquing. You need to keep a sharp chain and let it do the cutting. If you bog it down you are sucking amps fast. Reviewers that complained about the short battery life were probably trying to use it like a gas saw and force it through the log. If you just let the saw do the work 2 batteries will last just as long as a full tank of gas. I have 2 because I also bought the string trimmer at the same time. I think if you are looking for a nice power to cost ratio, this tool set fits the bill. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My first chainsaw I've been using a hand saw to remove large limbs and was planning to cut down some small trees, between 3-5 inches in diameter. Using a hand saw became annoying very quickly, so I bought a chainsaw. I know nothing about chainsaws. This one was cheaper than the gas models being sold at Home Depot and I like the thought of the battery being used in other equipment. I was pleasantly surprised with the performance when cutting large limbs and I had to cut down 5 small trees. Depending on what I was cutting the battery lasted 30-60 minutes. It seems like the chainsaw went through the bar oil very quickly. It went through the small tank of oil per battery. I'm unclear if there are different weights of bar oil or if the usage is normal. I have used Ryobi's brushless 18 volt chainsaw so I went in knowing that the chainsaw could handle the workload but man did this thing exceed my expectations. First off when you pull the trigger you get an almost instant response and the chain is moving at full speed very quickly. Second the saw is still pretty light even with the 4 AH battery and full tank of bar chain oil. Third the self oiling is a very nice feature and does a great job oiling the bar so you have to worries in that area. Also it doesn't seem like it over oils the bar so you might be able to feel the oil tank maybe every other time you replace the battery. I also really like the user features added to this version, the placement of the battery is nice and out of the way but still easy to see when you want to check the battery life. I also like that the chain tighter/looser tool has on board storage so you don't have to worry about losing it. The 14 inch blade is nice and allows you to get most cuts if you are using this for cleaning up things around your yard. I also think the battery has great run time, i used it to make about 50 cuts of wood that was at least 6 inches in diameter with only draining the battery by half. I definitely think this is a great chainsaw for the homeowner. My only negative to the saw is that it was louder than i was expecting but not really that big of a deal.
