Does this saw has a chain brake? If not, why doesn't Ryobi care about operator safety?
Asked by: DB
Well your an idiot its electric, its only on if you have your finger on the trigger. The saw will not waist power in idle like a gas saw. Keep your booger hook from the cutty switch you should be fine. If not well I do enjoy Darwin Awards....

How long does the battery last ?

Asked by: Gee
My freshly charged 4ah battery went to 2 bars after 12 cuts of ~10"dia fir. That might not sound like much but it was exactly the minimum I was looking for. I'll be able fill my truck (~20 logs) with 1 battery, and cut it all down to size with 2 batteries (~60 more cuts). It is so much better than the 2-strokes I've been using for 15 years. Compared to 4 stroke, a battery probably costs the same, but when you figure another $1/gal for 2-stroke oil mix the battery is much better.

Does this come with oil? My box did not have any oil included but did have an empty bag for some reason. If it does not come with oil, which oil should I use?
Asked by: peyeeeehawwww6969
Hi, pey- Thanks for the question. Bar and Chain oil is not included, but any kind of bar and chain oil will work great. We do recommend emptying any residual oil after you're done using it- this will help reduce seeping during storage. We hope this helps!

Probably the best size bar in its class. The only improvement I'd make to it would be to use tool-less adjusting knobs (like a competing maker) rather than standard nuts for the bar adjustment. That being said, the on-board wrench makes the adjustment and cleaning easy, and probably allows a tighter fit. So maybe I wouldn't change it after all. :-) If you have other 40-volt Ryobi tools and need a chainsaw, this is a no-brainer. It's really not that much more money than another battery, especially if you catch it on sale. Easily plows through the jobs of a home owner/weekend warrior without a hiccup. If you're a lumberjack or need to cut cord after cord of firewood, a gas saw is still probably the better choice for speed and recharge/refuel time. An electric chainsaw just makes sense. They're so much easier to use than gas for the normal property owner. See my YouTube review at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZnsoNBgpSw

I made twelve 8-10" dia cuts in hard fir, used 50% of 4ah battery and 25% of oil reservoir. Cutting was less than 1 minute each. Blade did well removing large shavings. You can't push on the bar, and you need to be extra careful not to bind the saw with bad technique. Wait a moment for it to get up to speed when you squeeze the trigger. I had to tighten the blade initially, I loosened the large nuts first, not sure if that is necessary but that's the old 2-stroke way. I ordered a 2nd 4ah battery for $105. If you can't get a battery discount probably better to buy the 5ah. Be careful buying off name batteries, they might not be compatible with the newer charger mdl. OP403. The enclosed battery was mdl. OP40401, my 2nd battery is OP4040. The oiler is gravity fed so probably best to drain after each use. The keeper on the cap is a pain, I'll probably cut it off and secure cap on the outside somehow. There is no kickback brake but an electric motor stops faster than a gas motor. The noise was noticeable without ear protection which probably isn't necessary. It took ~2hrs to charge from 25% to 100%. If you don't read the fine print, note that lithium battery charging has to be cautious. If you put too hot or cold a battery on the charger, it might not charge until the temperature changes to medium. I saw some people say their battery wouldn't charge, maybe this was the reason. I have 2 broken $300 2-stroke saws in my garage. Been heating with 2.5 chords of wood/yr for 15 years. I am now done with 2-strokes!! If I can get the old ones running I'll sell for $100ea and good riddance!! I haven't found good sharpening tool yet, looks like I'll have to use individual flat and round files. The round file is 5/32". Hopefully my photos will load. Thanks to other reviews explaining this can replace a gas saw, for sure it is great up to 12" logs and $300 with 2nd battery is the cost of a basic gas saw.

I am a RYOBI Fan but this is the first RYOBI Tool that I am disappointed with.I dont use gas saws because my needs have only been like once in 3 years. First the 40 v batterys i have for my blower, weed eater, push lawn mower are not compatiable with the chain saw. It will only work with the 4Ah battery that comes with it. Then it did jam up up fairly quickly on first use and chain came off, Cleaned it out and was going again. then I had about ten minutes and it was dead. It did cut good for the time I had. This saw is great for a small amount of limbs. It would not work long enough to do a whole tree. So I should have just got a corded electric saw. since not all 40V batterys are not the same. Ryobi should give ya 2 batterys with it so while first battery charges up you can still get some work done. At least it is PRETTY! LOL

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to 40 volt collection. First off, this saw will not take the place of a large gas powered chainsaw, but wow is this thing incredible. Easy fill bar lube, no leaks. Sawdust and wood chips are easily displaced from saw, so that it doesn’t clog up easily. Lightweight and easy operation. I dropped a 10” diameter, 30ft tall maple that was holding up a 12” diameter, 30ft oak with ease. Cut this all up into 14” pieces and limbed the 2 trees and used approx 1 & 1/2 full battery charge. I highly recommended having at least a couple batteries as they take about 3 hours to fully charge, but they last a long time. I have a few of the Ryobi 40V tools and somewhere around 30-35 of the 18V tools and I think I am most impressed with my new 40V chainsaw. I will still have occasions to use my gas saw for big jobs around my property, but this will be my go to saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read this! This saw is pretty serious. For around the yard it is all you will ever need. BUT! Get a 2nd battery. Preferably even a 3rd. It doesn't consume the batteries as much as it gets them hot. The saw itself stays pretty cool but the internal temp of the battery goes up enough to go to thermal shutdown. You don't feel it. It takes a bit for the heat to make it to the housing of the battery. But buck some 18 inch logs for 10 or 15 minutes and pull the battery. Wait about 5 minutes and you'll feel how hot it can get. For limbing you won't have any issues. But if you're cutting big stuff just swap the battery every 10 minutes or so. Don't wait for them to trip off. Just make it part of your routine and you will love this saw. It is a serious workhorse and you can't beat the ease of use and the quietness. Highly highly recommended!

This cordless chainsaw comes completely assembled; only required charging battery fully and filling oil reservoir with appropriate oil {separate purchase}. Fill level is clearly visible from front/blade side of saw. Operation at full power/load is fairly quiet and cutting performance effective. I was able to cut down 2 tree trunks each about 12 inches diameter to stump ground-level and did not experience any kick-back instances. Did have to recharge battery, clean sawdust/oil buildup and add reservoir oil before completing however. Probably could have better accomplished by cutting down higher-up from ground-level first, then cutting down from top of stumps to complete without as much odd-angling of chainsaw and resulting dust buildup into saw blade/drive cover. Product tool did meet my expectations.

I had some trimming I needed to do around the house, and since I already have some other Ryobi 40 volt tools I decided to give this saw a try. I'm really glad that I did. This saw is awesome. I had a large pine tree down and figured I'd give it a good workout. I charged the battery as instructed. First I cut all the limbs off it. They were in the 4" diameter range and it did a great job. It still had plenty of charge left so I figured I'd cut it at the butt. It was large enough that I had to cut from both sides (See Butt Cut image) It did an amazing job of cutting through the trunk and it still had almost 50% charge left. The next day my grandson took it and cut the trunk up in sections (See Trunk Cuts Image). He had to change the battery after a couple of cuts but the second battery (5Ah) finished the cuts. One note here" I have an old 2.5 AH battery (4025) and don't waste your time trying one of those. It ran the saw less than a minute, so I charged it up and it did the same thing. I don't know if the battery is weak or if the saw just doesn't like the low powered battery. It works great with both the 4AH that it came with and with the 5AH that I already had.

I got one free from Ryobi on a one time guarantee, but no battery lasts more than three or four charges and each charge last about 20 min. The motor is fine but the cost of batteries exceeds the cost of the saw.
