Hi Bob, Thanks for your inquiry! The RYOBI 16 in. 13.5 Amp Corded Cultivator RYAC701 should not be sprayed with water. Water entering a cultivator will increase the risk of electric shock. If you are going to wash the tines with a water hose, please remove them from the cultivator and dry them completely so as not to promote rust. We recommend that you wipe the tines with oil or spray them with silicone lubricant to prevent rusting. The oil or silicone lubricant can also be used with the cleaning regimen instead of using water. Probably just one pass, the whole width is 16+ inches but you can leave two tines off for a more narrow path.

what is the minimum depth setting? I only need to go down 1.5 inches.

Asked by Jay July 30, 2020

You can adjust the depth from 0-8 inches. If you tilt it back while tilling you can creat any depth. I first tilt it back a little just to cut up the top layer of grass.

It will cut through them but they will wrap around the shafts. You'll need a razor knife and needle nose pliers to remove them. I would pull them up or use a propane weed burner.

I had 2 parts leftover. They look like some kind of black plastic wheel clip, they are not shown in the instructions

The pins have retaining clips to keep them in place. Simply push the pin into place through the axle and attach the clip.

Great for our yard. We bought it for several reasons, we have goats and they poop breaks down into dirt which is great dirt but does lack down tightly. We purchased this to break through some tough hard dirt. Works beautifully, easy to handle, had no trouble getting the job done. Highly recommended. We will also be using this in our garden boxes before planting to mix up and loosen the dirt.

Can’t beat the price for what you get with this tiller
Like many people durijg Covid-19, I have been working from my house since March. Those pesky chores that you say you will get around on the weekend, now are during the week. My lawn was not up to par and the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street only produced weeds. I bought this tiller to start a new and so far it has surpassed all expectations. It took about 25 minutes to complete what would take me hours by hand “the old fashioned way”. I highly recommend if you need a tiller and do not want to deal with a gas powered engine.

For the size it is a great tiller! We are using it for a pretty large job in our front yard and it is powerful despite its size. The cord is a little annoying, but we knew that when we bought it. I included a picture of the yard it tilled.

Good machine for the money. Used it for our last minute little backyard veggie garden. After digging out the grass manually with a shovel the machine works well to work on the new dirt and prepare for planting.

I bought this to replace my old Honda 4 cycle FG110 which finally died after many years of use. 1. I absolutely love that you have none of the hassles of a gas powered machine: no gas, no oil, no carburetor, no choke, no cord to pull. Push the button and it goes. Easy to assemble. 2. My task was to till some raised beds in my herb garden. The soil was previously tilled last season. The Ryobi does a decent job of moving the top 3-4 inches of soil well and mixing additives into the soil. Once it hits hard, packed soil it doesn't do very much to cultivate that soil. I had to take a shovel and turn the packed earth over and then use the Ryobi to till the soil. It says it gets down as far as 8 inches but I didn't get even close to that in depth of till. I don't think it has the power to cultivate down through sod or ground that hasn't been previously tilled; it just doesn't have that kind of power. I did notice that it does buck a lot and that it takes some strength to move it around and keep it under control. It does take some getting used to dealing with the power cord and keeping it pout of the way. That is a small trade off for not having to deal with a gasoline engine. It does have some weight to it; at least as heavy as a comparable gas powered tool. 3. For my limited needs tilling previously tilled beds from last season this worked great and at half the cost of buying a brand new Honda FG110.

My old gas tiller's fuel lines became brittle and I was tired of mixing fuel for it. I decided that I didn't want to repair the old one as the cost was about one third of the price of this one and parts needed to be ordered on line and would take two weeks to arrive. I needed a tiller now. Once assembled I took it out to my lawn where the new 35' x 10' garden was to be and started tilling. It's performance seemed inadequate and was taking some work to make any progress. Had I made a mistake buying this model? Once I figured out that I'd installed the blades backwards and made the correction, wow, what a difference! It cut through the existing sod relatively easily, a one inch thick root was chipped away by this tool as well. I doesn't bog down in my soil. When a large loose root jammed the blades, they were easy to remove in order to clear the jam. The instructions on how to install the blades could have been clearer and saved me half an afternoon. A $600 machine would have been easier to till with using half the time but was way outside the price I was willing to pay. I am happy with my purchase.

(What's this)
This 16 in. 13.5 amp corded cultivator is another excellent product from Ryobi. Over the years I have had bad luck with the small gasoline powered cultivators with respect to maintenance issues and their overall lifespan. Therefore, when this corded electric cultivator became available I immediately ordered it. The unit was easily assembled per the well written and illustrated operator's manual; except for two minor issues. The tine assemblies are attached to the tine shaft using lock pins which I have never used before. The operator's manual did not provide any guidance as to how much force or what tool(s) to use to unlatch and then latch the lock pins. I eventually used two gripping pliers to open and then close the locking pins. There is also an end cap that is applied to each wheel. The instructions are: "Push the end cap into the center of the wheel until it snaps into place." I tried several times to get the end caps to snap into place without success. I then examined the center hub of the wheel and noticed there were two notches in the plastic that corresponding connectors on the end cap were to line up with. Once correctly positioned the caps snapped into position with only a slight push. (In addition, make sure to read the two included corrections to the assembly instructions.) Since the soil is currently frozen I plugged the unit into an AC outlet to ensure the electric motor worked and the tines rotated. The unit appeared to work well. This unit is built by Ryobi so I expect it will provide many years of maintenance free operation. See attached photographs.

(What's this)
I was looking for a small tiller/cultivator for my raised beds and small gardens. I was pleasantly surprised by the power of this motor. No matter how deep the tines went, the motor did not slow down. The tines are stronger than I expected and tilled the ground well. Although it is not gardening season yet, I tilled my raised beds to plant lettuce soon. The cultivator did a nice job, it was easy to handle. The cushioned gripped handles let me control the tiller easily. Looking forward to gardening with this cultivator.

(What's this)
I compared this unit to a very good 4 cycle gas tiller [which was more than twice the price] I was not expecting much. However it performed at least as well as the gas unit. I am very pleased with it. It has a 16 width which works for me 99% of the time. I got 33% more done than the 11" unit in the same time period. I am in Florida and am in the process of turning sandy root bound soil into good soil. In the pictures shown I am chopping up a new section that I had applied 4" of mulch to a year before. Every cultivator I have ever used eventually gets choked with roots. Same with this unit. However because this is lighter you can lift it up a bit to free some root so you can go longer. You will spend some time cleaning the tines on a new cut. This true on most all small tilters. It will cut through 1/4" root without problems. With gas you have no power cord to worry about. With this unit you will have to a breaker [ at least 15 amps 20 is better] and heavy duty cord if you are not near the outlet. My project was over a 100 ft. away and it blew the breaker time and again. I just hauled out the generator and it worked fine. For beds around the house it worked great off a regular electric cord. I recommend this for any household. I have 5 acres with gardens both around the house and away from the house.
