Questions & Answers

Can you use the mower with a power cord? so you can buy the charger & battery in the futire

Asked by: boyo
Thank you for asking, Boyo. This lawn mower is designed to work wby only using a Ryobi 40 volt battery. This model is not a Hybrid unit and does not have the option to be used with an electrical cord. This particular model does not come equipped with the battery and charger (mostly for those customers that do not need an extra battery and already have one). However, please check with Home Depot to see the pricing and availability of the batteries and chargers. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Ryobi! -Keri

Can I use the battery that comes with the Ryobi 40-Volt Cordless Lithium-ion Trimmer/Edger with this Lawm Mower?

Asked by: TJJAL
Thank you for asking, TJJAL. Since all of our Ryobi 40 volt tools, batteries, and chargers are interchangeable, you are able to use any Ryobi 40 volt battery with this lawn mower. However, please note that the batteries that have a higher amperage will give you more run time and a little more power. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Ryobi! -Keri

16 in. 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Battery Walk Behind Push Lawn Mower - 4.0 Ah Battery/Charger Included is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 1289.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quiet, easy to use and store... battery ok OVERALL: Light, compact, and easy to store. Decent power, can stall on longer grass. Battery life only 45 minutes, with about 3 hour charge, get spare. Easy to maneuver. Much quieter than a gas mower. BATTERY: You will want a spare. Ran for about 45 minutes, then required 3 hour charge. Did seem to generate a fair amount of heat during use. Charger itself is fine, though no fan to cool battery. USABILITY: Easy to push. Start button simple, auto stop on trigger release. Adjustable height, but lowest setting is fine for most use. Can get stuck easily, low front clearance, but light enough to move manually. MULCHING: A little weak, can't chop pine needles. Any wood chips I ran over rattled around without getting broken up or kicked to bag, had to lift mower to allow the to escape. OPERATION: Quiet as any mower I've heard. I did not need ear protection. Handle can break down for storage, though not quick release, need to unscrew both sides... little awkward.

There is a lot to like in the innovations in the mower, but the batteries are terrible. I was like a kid at Christmas when my items arrived, only to be quashed by the infamous defective battery light. It is a shame as Ryobi appears to have done such a good job with the tools' design. The handle folds down for shipping/storage and the height control lever is the best I've seen. I did notice the safety button that has to be pushed prior to squeezing the start handle has an off-centered contact, requiring you to press the left side of the larger button. I also wasn't a huge fan of the blade attachment adapter being plastic, though I'm sure it was done for weight reduction. Looks like it's back to dino-juice for me for the time being... Be sure and read the reviews on the batteries before buying any battery powered Ryobi: http://www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors-Outdoor-Power-Equipment-Replacement-Engines-Parts-Outdoor-Power-Batteries-Chargers/Ryobi/N-5yc1vZbxd3Z1aw

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for small lawns! This mower is fantastic for a small property. My yard in the front and back is ~10' out by ~30' long and the sides are ~6' out by ~35 ' long. Sorry I'm not good with acres and such. I already had the battery and charger because I got the matching 40V string trimmer before. I'm able to mow and trim my yard on a single fully charged battery. Will probably spring for another battery at some point just to have one for both products. The mower needed hardly any assembly right out of the box and was ready to go. The cutting height adjusts extremely easily, as if you're shifting a car. I haven't used the mulching plug and have been bagging everything. The bag does fill up kind of quickly depending on how high and/or thick the grass has gotten. This mower also runs very quietly. Sounds like a box fan. Overall, I'm very pleased and it suits my needs TIP: Use the bag, set the mower to the lowest setting, and run it over sidewalks and driveways to clean up grass clippings like a vacuum!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a little miracle mower I have been mowing lawns on my own for 20+ years. I'm a short gal and have used gas and electric corded mowers. I'm sick of them ALL. So I decided to be done with the gas and electric cords and try something new. I purchased the leaf blower with this so that I could have the charger and battery as well for the lawn mower-it was worth it because the other 2 components on their own were just as expensive. So I get the lawn mower home yesterday, and my grass was in such bad shape. It's May now and the very first time I've even begun to look at the lawn. No joke-it was at a minimum of 6 inches of outgrowth. This little bad boy cut threw it like a hot knife through butter. Make sure your battery is fully charged for a 1/2 acre lawn. I used the highest setting-and to date I have never seen a mower have such GREAT clearance for an overgrown lawn. What a solid product. Just amazing.

I've had it since February 2019 and I bought it because the previous model that I had crapped out after 3 years and it is no longer being sold This one seems to be the revised version of that one so I expected it to be comparable. For starts they got rid of the "traditional" bar you pull before pushing the start button and gave it a paddles that could be squeezed with either hand. A good attempt at ergonomics but not very comfortable while pushing the mower. The push button start box has a lot of hard sharp edges that are just obnoxious when you rub against them when starting the mower. They keep the cam locking system to fold down the push handle but you have to spread them apart to allow it fold at all. I also noticed that the overall width seems to be narrower than my previous one but it's also taller, so it doesn't fit in the space I was previously storing my mower. While that is a lot of issue they are all very minor in the grand scheme of cutting grass. The mower works great and the price was very agreeable so overall I'm pleased with this but the little issues I have with this mower make me wonder if the more expensive models have a a little more attention to detail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Changed my life My trusty gas mower has been in my family for 20 years. Its still loud and powerful. However, it also requires alot of maintainence and regularly needs to be fiddled with to get it going. Not to mention buying gas. I recently moved to a new house with a smaller lawn, and decided to buy this little green mower. I should have bought it sooner! One of my favorite purchases in recent memory. It is so much lighter and easier to manuever. I can finally listen to some tunes while mowering without compromising my eardrums because its much more quiet. Plus there is virtually zero vibration transferred to the handle from the motor which is great. My backyard was pretty thick with overgrowth because it had been raining so much lately. I needed two batteries to complete my small lawn. However i do think the one battery it came with will be enought to cut both front and back with just regular growth. I can definitely tell it lacks the power of a gas mower, but the other benefits are so great that I'll still give it 5 stars. So what if I have to run over a larger weed twice? The thing is so light, it's not a hassle at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for Small Yards. I ended up having to buy this mower because the one with batteries was out of stock. I also purchased the blower and trimmer to get the batteries. Good news is I now have 2 chargers and 2 batteries. I have a pretty small lot, with maybe 0.1 acre of grass. The first time I used the mower, the grass was pretty long as I did not have a mower and the previous owner did not mow recently. This mow took over 3 battery charges to get through. The second time I mowed, a couple days later, the grass wasn't as long, but a bit damp. This mow took over 1 battery to get through as well. I was hoping to get the (tiny) yard mowed on a single charge, but that doesn't seem like it will happen. Perhaps bagging would be slightly more efficient? I am on the highest height of the mower, which is 2.75". I wish it at least went to 3". The mower is simple and light enough that my wife can use it to mow as well, which was a bonus going for electric. One complaint I have is that the quick-release knobs stick out a bit from the side on the handle, so it is a bit difficult to get close to the wall (or my neighbors picket fence).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from pretty good, not perfect overall its a nice mower. -1/2 star for not having quite enough power, -1/2 star for not being able to go quite high enough, and -1 star for the reliability of Ryobi products in general. The mower on its highest setting is just right for the grass in my yard. but it would be nice to have a slightly higher setting for the occasions where i need it, such as newly planted grass. the mower is powerful enough to cut the grass, but it spins up slowly, and it bogs a little in thicker grass, necessitating a slower walking pace, not really a big deal. I bought the previous 48 volt lead acid Ryobi mower. the power and grass handling was really great, but the battery only lasted through one season, and considering the replacement battery is $140, that is obviously a problem (I owned the mower 2 years, with one failure each year). that one had a lead acid battery (which i know how to take care of properly). If this one lasts two years i will revise this review to 4 stars.
