Will this grinder work to cut metal?

My question refers to the 4 1/2 in Angle Grinder.

Very light use only. This thing overheats after a couple of minutes. I consider it useless.

Love this grinder, actually I have two of them and will be purchasing another soon. I like to have different disk or wire brush or cutter wheel etc. when I am working on a project. I have become a cordless nut for almost everything. I do have a 6" and a 9" corded grinder for extra heavy grinding but that is about 2% of my grinding needs. I am a metal fabricator and custom welder guy and create all kinds of metal things, as well as fixing and repairing broken stuff. I have used many brand name grinders and so far this is my favorite. Not sure how long it will last but my first 6 months have been good. I have several Ryobi drills and have my first broken one, (stripped gear in head) but I have put them through unbelievable torture rebuilding my 1,500 sq. ft. deck all 2x6 boards. last summer. I would suggest buying the extended warranty if you are going to use these tools hard. Remember they only have a 90 day warranty at the store, then you have to send the tool off to be fixed for the next 3 years.

The wrench stores in the handle so it's always where you need it. The safety button and trigger are a little touchy, sometimes I have to adjust my grip to get it to work, might just be mine. It is much slower than my corded grinders and it goes through batteries really quick. I have 3 of the p100 batteries that come with the cheaper drill combo packs. Went through all of those batteries making less than 100 cuts on 1/4 round stock. Would highly suggest a 4ah battery, or 2. I will mostly use it with a wire wheel to clean up flux core welds. Maybe a couple cuts on thin material. Overall it is still worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light Weight, Portable, Easy to Use I got this angle grinder about a week ago when I bought 2 of the new P108 batteries and charger. I'm a long time RYOBI user and new they wouldn't let me down with this one. I just got to use it for the first time today cutting aluminum head rail for toilet partitions I'm installing in Pigeon Forge. Worked like a charm. My only issue is with the clamp for the guard being in the way and not allowing for a full depth cut with the 4" cutting wheel I had on it. I still was able to work around it without removing the guard. Great product! Loyal RYOBI fan! All the other guys laugh at me with their high dollar Dewalt and Milwaukee, I put them to shame when they see what my tools do that theirs can't.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I'm on my third one. So far, I am not happy with this grinder. But, time will tell. I have numerous other "green" Ryobi One+ tools and think they are great. My first grinder did not work out of the box. I never got far enough to put a battery in it because I could not tighten the arbor on a disc. So I exchanged that. Item #2 worked, but like others complained of, one brush melted out through the side after less than an hour (probably less than 15 minutes actual use). #3 seems to be OK, but not much time invested with it yet. (However long it took to grind a 1/8" deep notch along 2' of cold rolled flat stock.) I am hopeful for #3 because it is acting different than when #2 was working. #2 acted like the battery was low and had a hard time maintaining RPM. But, I am using Lithium batteries, so I normally would not expect it to change no-load speed. #3 seems to run at a constant no-load speed, with little slowing under load. I suspect the brushes were improperly seated in #2. Quality control or manufacturing or design of this tool is at best questionable.

I came to this page hoping to find an amp rating for this device (which I didn't find), but figured I'd leave a review while I'm here. This grinder is incredible for the price. I wasn't expecting much from Ryobi when I bought my first One+ tool, but they continue to surprise me. At a recent job I needed to cut through 200 linear feet of asphalt, and having forgotten my circular saw, and having no other options, I decided to give this thing a try. It did it. I was only able to cut just shy of 2" deep with it, of course, but it was enough to break the asphalt off, and break it off clean. I managed this job on 5, 4ah batteries. The lithium+ batteries make all the difference... the black batteries that come with some of these tools aren't worth powering more than their flashlights. Over the 200 feet of slicing through asphalt, the grinder got HOT... real hot... and I FULLY expected it to burn out at any minute, yet it never did; in fact, it still works as well as the day I bought it. Great tool.

I had to construct a new out building, and the previous person used a half a dozen anchors in the cement pad. Since I already had some Ryobi cordless tools, I decided to go with this grinder. It works excellent! It took me no more than 12 seconds to cut each anchor flush with the cement pad. It's lightweight and not at all unwieldy. I highly recommend this product, especially at this price point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, plenty of power. I have used grinding, cutting, & wire wheels for various projects with this grinder. Aside from being a little bulky, every angle grinder is in my opinion though, this grinder has performed every time I needed it to. Much like the rest of my Ryobi purchases, after using it a few times I found myself asking “why do people waste their money on the more expensive brands?”

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Was not designed to equal performance of an AC angle grinder. Convenient and light-duty. Before I bought this, I read about the excessive power consumption and short run time. I found those claims to be true regardless of the battery capacity or model number: P108's, of course, lasted longer than P102's. That said, this tool was not designed to replace an AC angle grinder. It was designed for small jobs and convenience, i.e. to save you a little time by not having to dig out the AC grinder to do small stuff. It's portable and can be used remotely without a generator and extension cord: just another beauty of cordless tools, eh? To expect it to be or do anything else is unreasonable. Buy it to make your work-flow on a project go smoother and quicker. I use this primarily to remove burs and rough edges left by my 14" cut-off saw. It's very nice for rust removal prior to welding and mild grinding afterwords. Also handles short, thin-metal cut-off jobs nicely with the right wheel. The tool to change wheels is included. It slides into a slot in the handle. 'Camouflaged quite well:-).
