Questions & Answers

Does tool only mean no battery or charger with it?

Asked by: Catfish
Yes, but then you buy a battery (two might be better so you can be using one and charging the other) and a charger, and you'll be able to buy any of the many new Ryobi tools with no more batteries or chargers saving money each time. Most of us have other battery powered tools that are still good---BUT---batteries no longer take a charge, and try to find new ones after a few years. Manufacturers change the battery configuration on their new tools and you are left with finding a replacement battery or rebuilding your battery (possible, but not very easy). Ryobi batteries will work with all their 18V tools (Ryobi does also make tools which use 40V batteries which will not fit 18V tools). And while all their 18V batteries will fit all their tools, they sell "standard" batteries and more advanced batteries (faster charging, longer run time, etc.) and each will work in all the 18V Ryobi tools. I have three 18V Ryobi tools now and I give them all top ratings for quality, performance and value.

Can this be used for framing nails?

I am looking for a non pneumatic option for framing. Can I use nails that are "framing quality" on this for framing some walls? If not, do you know of some other options. I am not sure if its worth my investment in an air compressor.
Asked by: brandeeno
This is for smaller 16ga finish nails only. I would not recommend this for framing. There are other options for cordless framing nailers, but none that are made by Ryobi at this time.

18-Volt ONE+ Lithium-Ion Cordless AirStrike 16-Gauge Cordless Straight Finish Nailer (Tool Only) with Sample Nails is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 578.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do I have to give it a star? I bought this around 2 years ago to install crown moulding. From the first time I used it until the last time today it have been nothing but a disappointing tool. I should have taken it back the first day. I've only had problems with this nailer. The biggest problem is not firing. It seems to do it in the most inconvenient times. Every time I would have a piece in position to nail it wouldn't fire or it would fail as it was firing and leave 1\2 of the nail sticking out. Then the light would flash telling me my fully charged battery was dead. I would then grab a new fully charged battery only to have the same issue. It has taken a beating well. During my frustrations I have slammed it on the work bench when trying to use it on a project in the garage. I have thrown it on the ground after failing to fire for the countless time. I really hope this was just my experience and everyone else is enjoying this tool because it has caused me to much frustration. Please buy the brad nailer, that is a phenomenal tool.

It does not always set the nail to depth even with a fresh battery and the depth gauge set to max. It does seem to get a little better after the first several nails but it is never completely consistent with the depth of the nails. It often leaves them sticking out a bit and they have to be driven in by hand. This is frustrating. I returned the first one I got thinking it was a bad unit but the new one does the same thing. Also the nose and housing is kind of bulky making it difficult to get into corners and tight spaces. For small quick projects it is very convenient and a lot easier than dragging out the compressor, hose and finish nailer. I have a Hitachi cordless nailer that I don't use all that often. I got frustrated with that because the gas cartridges go bad so when I would go to use it I'd have to figure out which cartridges still worked, so this Ryobi gun is more reliable in that aspect.

Much more convenient than my pneumatic unit, except for its size and weight. I used it to build cabinetry drawers. It drove the 16 gauge 1-1/2" nails through 3/4" hickory sidewalls and into the hickory back wall ends just fine. I have 9 Ryobi One* power tools and 5 chargers, including the multiple-battery charger. This nail gun finishes off my collection in fine form.

I’m giving it a 3 star rating because the first one I had needed to be replaced within 20 minutes. This gun would shoot 5 nails then would have to take a break for 30-45 minutes. The gun would want to shoot a nail but never would. Fresh out of the box. The replacement seems to be working just fine and I’m happy with it so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally Got My Hands On One! Since I'm in H.D. stores at least once a day, I have this mental list of "one of these days" items to get. Since I already have a reasonable collection of Ryobi 18volt items in my quiver of tools, the nailer collection was bound to be next on the list! I was impressed by the size, weight and balance of the unit. The power is enough to handle any finish nailing job I threw at it. The most important factors for me was the ability to use batteries I already own and a product built well enough to do the job it is intended to do; finish nailing. This product met those needs. No special nails required and no disposable cartridges needed to use this product; no cords, no air lines .... no worries. All this at a fraction the cost of other nailers. I won't go into the "item specifics" since they are posted & well detailed already. I CAN say this, however .... I can't wait to get the rest of the Ryobi nailers!

Really hand finish/brad nailer for DIYers and even pros, the time it saves is worth the money.. No hose and air compresser needed! If you have a lot of trim to hang or some light work to do to, this saves you a lot of time with finishing nails, especially the thinner gauge that like to bend. I used this most recently while redoing the doors (used on trim, not doors) inside the house and it cut my drill/hammer and nail time down by 75% or so. I reused the old brittle trim on the doors and this gun/nails didn't fray or crack it. Even on angled trim, if I held the gun parellel to the wall, it countersunk the nail (see picture). The only time I had an issue with the nail not countersinking properly was when I was not holding the nail gun down hard enough at the end of the drive and if I press the top of it (the air vent) to my chest then it couldn't "breathe" right. The directions are not the best but it is easy to use after watching a quick video on the internet. You can adjust the drive depth and air pressure which is great. I keep the power on the highest level and the countersink at the deepest. Clearing jams (which I havent had) can be done by loosening a simple latch near where it nails. The nail gun is not too heavy and the battery will last a long time. You can use 16 nails from 3/4" to 2.5". Although battery powered, the nail gun still uses air. The only downside to this tool is you have to wait a second between each nail. The light on the nail gun is an added feature for dark spots. Tool belt hook is nice as well although you probably wont be hanging it unless you are going up a ladder. Battery lasts for several hundred nails and switching nail sizes is pretty easy. Charger works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy! I was impressed with the power this has and the number of finish nails I have driven without re-charging a Li battery. This is very convenient if you need to shoot a few nails - no need to get out the compressor to shoot with an air gun or to sink a finish nail after hammering. It also does not require CO2 cartridges. It shoots the nails nicely and slightly underflush (I shot through poplar and cedar). I used to think this was an unnecessary tool - but after one week, I believe it's great for a person who does a decent amount of finishing work. I just couldn't justify buying one before - now I could easily do that as a time saver. This would also make a great gift for the dad who has everything. But, be aware that this does not come with a battery or charger. At the price point, that should not be a surprise - but I want to make sure a reader does not expect that. If you have other Ryobi tools with a compatible battery, this is a good match.
