Does this unit charge both lithium and ni cad batteries and will it operate on both types?

The description only talks of "one +" batteries. Are ordinary batteries compatable or is Ryobi pushing the customer to buy lithium?
Asked by: sneakydeke

Customer Reviews

18-Volt ONE+ ToughTunes Radio/Charger is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 84.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Radio Yet another "Must Have" Ryobi gadget. Sound quality of the radio is decent, but seems to sound better when playing off of an MP3 player. The storage compartment is large, and there is a small "shelf" to place your player on the exterior of the door. But I would avoid placing your player on the exterior of the storage door as it seems that vibration would eventually cause the player to fall off of the small shelf. Hook and loop material would work well there though. The radio looks sturdy but is not too heavy, I have a blue colored job site radio that weighs 25 pounds so the lighter weight is nice. Charging time is on par with all other Ryobi chargers. I have not run the radio on battery power for long so I cannot comment on run time. All in all a great addition to the Ryobi collection, although I think a better price point would be around $99-109.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value / Features done correctly It's ruggedly built. Has good sound considering the materials and construction. The USB jack is powered even when operating off of the 18v battery, so a cell phone or MP3 player can be powered/charged when it's not plugged into the wall. Green/Red charging indicators are located on the top-left of the front panel, so it's easy to see the status from a distance. As with any audio device, an tone or EQ control would have been nice. Not critical as most cell phone and MP3 audio players have that feature built into them, but would be nice for the radio aspect of this device. The compartment on the top-front should house any size cell phone or MP3 player. The audio/USB connections are inside the compartment. The 18V battery compartment on the rear has a cover to keep everything clean while charging. Two AAA batteries power the radios memory as well as the clock. The black plastic outer frame should protect it well from bumps while transporting it. Not sure how well it would hold up if dropped more than a foot or two, not that I plan to put it to the test! The power cord winds around two posts on the bottom which keep it out of the way when not in use, but subject the plug to mud/dirt when setting it down.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I had three in a row, all three went bad. No sound, charges fine. I had three in a row, all three went bad. No sound, charges fine. I bought my first one in January, radio had no sound two months later. Exchanged for a new one and second radio had no sound one month later. Exchanged for a third and third radio quit in two weeks. Now they seem to be unavailable. All three of my radios never even left my home and when I returned them to the store they still looked brand new. I take very good care of my tools. Hopefully they come out with a newer version so I can have music while I work. I need a radio that works AND charges 18v Ryobi Lithium batteries.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good unit but bit pricey I got a $100 gift card for Christmas so went to Home Depot to spend it. I have most of the One+ 18v tools so I really wasn't looking for another one, however I noticed that there was a special if you buy a select One+ tool you get any other One+ tool for free (up to $99). I can always use another "2X" battery and at $89 for the battery it qualified for the free item. Anyway as for the review; along with the other people's comments, the radio seems pretty solid yet light weight. It has the minimum features that I think most would want and the sound quality is adequate. I like the fact that the unit charges the battery during plug in and that the USB device is charged from the battery. I wish the power and Aux cords were longer, but that's not a big deal. Really my only real complaint is the price. At $139 I think the unit should at least come with a small One + lithium battery. However like I previous stated, due to the special I basically got $228 worth of merchandise for $139 so I can't complain. If you're looking for a "boom-box" and you have other One+ tools, I think this unit is an OK deal.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the most reliable Good worksite radio with Phone/mp3 capabilities. I am on my second exchange. The power supply quit on my first one after 2 months. The charger quit on my second one after 2 months. My third unit is in shipping now. I did not have audiophile expectations from a worksite unit as others have stated (WTH are you thinking). I do expect it to function beyond 2 to 3 years of light use(let alone 2 months). I have several other Ryobi 18V tools that I use every weekend, so I do desire this format. I bought a couple of LION batteries to upgrade my collection so I needed the mixed chemistry charger. I really hope this one works out because I am fond of its performance and capabilities.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Idea, Poor Implementation As I type this, I just finished searching for my receipt to return my second Ryobi radio. Toughtunes seems to be a poor name for it. The first one had the dreaded electrical hiss/squeal mentioned above. I returned it and the 2nd unit was equally bad. I decided to live with it since I already had the batteries and tools to match. THEN, the second unit died last week while I was on vacation. A small tab broke inside the battery compartment so the unit is no longer usable on battery power. Hopefully Home Depot will take this second one back. It's no longer a store item so I have been advised to get a refund, then get another one online, and have it delivered to the store. To be fair, the Plus batteries work great, save weight, and charge really fast. But, I need my charger to work and work properly for all of that to be a plus. I'm saddled to Ryobi due to having the batteries and tools. Hopefully the 3rd time will be the charm.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great idea Being a home improvement contractor this was just what I need to charge my iPhone and my ryobi tools. Worked great for 2 months then the USB charger stopped working and now it stopped charging my Li 18vdc battery. I've always been a ryobi fan but now i'm feeling let down. The radio is ok but I bought it to charge my phone and I touch , I'm fed up with devices that keep failing after a month or so.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Its okay but could have been better I bought this radio and the 1st. thing that I noticed is the amplifier Hiss. I also can't seem to get the unit to preset radio stations. As far as sound goes it has a Mid Bass sound, but clear. Battery charger in it works with nicads, and lipo ryobi batteries, which is a plus. I would recommend this radio only if you have other ryobi tools to go with it. Ryobi listen to me carefully....next time you make a radio go to a reputable radio manufacturer such as pioneer, kenwood, jvc, etc. for a amplifier for a radio like this next time.
