Missing hardware
Received the Ryobi grass trimmer in excellent condition but after putting it together I realized that the bolt for the handle is missing but I do have the wing nut.

Heavy & powerful, no batteries required
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This string trimmer has lots of power, great reach and pretty good balance with the adjustable handle. No batteries or a charger to worry about so I think this will enjoy a nice long life, but you absolutely need an extension cord up to the job (10-12 gauge with good construction).
The trimmer is still quite heavy despite no battery, and squeezing the safety trigger can get fatiguing after a long session. The bump-to-feed feature on the head works great, although I do worry how quickly the plastic housing might wear out.
I had an issue with my trimmer and once I was in touch with Ryobi's support team they took great care of me quickly.

works well bad reviews are operator error
so far so good. my gas stihl weed eater blew up a week prior to ordering this. so my grass was 18" this trimmer had plenty of power to blow through it. tap to feed like most trimmers works well. cuts through plants and tall grass. glad I don't need to mess with two stroke again.

Not a new trimmer
Received open box. Appears to have been used before and not assembled with care when returned. There is sticky black stuff on the trimmer. Disappointed.

Had the older model for many years for hedge trimming work, it finally gave out. Got this new model along with the Add-On 22 in. Articulating Hedge Trimmer Attachment and an Extension Pole. Together I can reach the tallest bushes in my yard without having to get on a ladder.
The weight of the unit is comparable to my 2 stroke gas Troy-Bilt model, and provides more power that the earlier electric model - the trimmer cut through tough vines and thicker branches just as well as when using the gas model. Much quieter so I can do yard work w/o bothering any neighbors, or inhaling those wonderful oiled up carbon monox fumes - bleah.
Be sure to get the big 12/3 15 amp power cord and of course, be mindful of where the cord is at all times - don't be a fool and cut that cord. Even if you do, the handles and grip on the unit will prevent the current from coming back up and into contact with you. You'll be amazed at how 15 amps will weld the copper conductors inside the power cord together, after a bright spark and that bzzzt sound that wakes you right up. Just splice the cord back together with the big yellow electrical crimps over in the electrical department and tape it over up with the black vinyl tape. Pick up a small flat file from tools in order to file the spot welded parts of the trimmer blade flat again and you're back in business. Yep that's from personal experience :-).
I got about 20 years out of the old Ryobi model, so we will see how far this one goes. It spins up that trimmer blade quickly and gave me no surprises. Be sure to get a bottle of 3-in-1 oil and dribble it into the blade edge while the trimmer is orientated vertically before each use. Getting the oil into the spaces where the movable blade slides in and out will lengthen it's lifespan considerably. Kind of like how K-Y Jelly makes everything better for the other tool if you catch my drift.

Line jamming on first use & poor guard design resulted in a shattered glass door.
I've not been able to find cartridges for my old electric Black & Decker Grasshog and the battery version did not have the power needed to uncover my backyard flagstones, so I ordered this unit after checking Consumer Reports. My first impression was that it was much heavier than I was used to and a bit awkward to use for removing grass from the flagstones. I also found that the line "jammed" rather quickly and every few minutes I had to open up the housing to free up line from the spool. That said, it got the job done and I would be keeping it if I had not decided to take my job further as I finished the flagstones with about six inches of line left on either side of the spool. I started "mowing" the grass in my backyard and was surprised to find that doing so was both easy and did not appear to eliminate any of the remaining line. Unfortunately, squirrels have been hiding acorns in the tall grass and this unit launched one twenty feet into my sliding glass door, which started to crack and ultimately shattered. In my opinion, there is too much power for far too small a guard. There's no guarantee this will not happen again, so I'm going to return the unit. My recommendation would be to not use it anywhere near your home, but given that it's corded, that kind of defeats it's limitations.
