Would I be able to use a 12 gauge 100 ft cord and have the power I need to make the trimmer work?
Asked by: Ris
I actually cobbled together all sorts of cords totaling about 250 feet to work on my 3 acres. It worked just fine. I had one 12 gage 100 foot cord, another 14 gage 100 footer, and another 12 gage. No noticeable loss of power and no problems. I did the equivalent of bush-hogging about 3 acres and this thing tore right through it all.

18 in. 10 Amp Electric String Trimmer is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 643.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost too powerful( impressed) Bought this electric trimmer about two weeks ago, and am very impressed. If you don't have an issue with running electric cord around the yard, this is a very fine choice! It is almost too powerful, so make sure you get comfortable with it power before running it full high speed( I was pulsating it in the beginning). I chose that one because I think buying weed wacker that runs on batteries is a waste of money. Buying a battery after 3-5 years will cost almost as much as buying a new trimmer. Also, I didn't want the 2 cycle engine trimmer because it will be hard at some point to get it started, and didn't want to mess around with Mixing oil/fuel, fuel saver in the winter, and maintenance later on. Only $69, and it it reliable, no headache maintenance, no buying batteries, and just buying the lines. Hope that helps! Will update if something will change.

I wanted to start doing my yard work again for more physical activity but the trimming part of yard work has always been the most frustrating because of constant string breakage. I also need to use electric for lighter weight for easier handling since I am petite. I don't mind the cord since my previous trimmers have been such. I have now used this trimmer 3x now and no string breakage. I put it together myself from the box and have followed instructions on how to reload so I can see if this is manageable too. I give this a thumbs up on all areas. I wish shaft length was adjustable because of my height but it is so much better than previous types and the handle is moveable for balancing adjustment which helps. This has become a great time saver from my previous trimmer. This electric trimmer will adapt to the accessories featured for the gas trimmer also but I have not purchased any of those accessories to make comment.

However, it was definitely not crafted with a female user in mind. Assembly was a bear. While you may be able to swap out attachments, there's no way I'll be able to get the trimmer attachment back off of the handle without help. So, it's pretty much just a string trimmer from now on for me. It is also very heavy for an electric trimmer, and the shaft is a bit too long for my 5'-8" frame. It was a major workout trying to edge my yard. I have some carpal tunnel and an old shoulder injury, and this beast reeked havoc on both with its weight and the grip/trigger that is clearly meant for a larger hand. The bump feed feature works well, although since the shaft is a little too long for me and the unit is so heavy, I found that I bumped it enough to feed line far more often than I intended to.

After putting it to several tough test including thick fig ivy ground cover (see video), I recommend it. This trimmer has a simple straight shaft design, well balanced with a comfortable adjustable handle. It is very powerful and does not vibrate as much as some I have used. The trimmer comes loaded with .080 twisted line that works great. The line is feed out using the bump method up to a 18 inches total cutting diameter. Replacement line is added 10 foot at a time in a fast, unique way using a hand wrench that is included (see photos). Extra cutting line is included. This trimmer is part of the Ryobi Expand-It line and the powerful 10 amp motor head can accept many different additional attachments. In summary if a corded trimmer will work for you, at 10 pounds weight this trimmer has great capability for the price and it appears to be built to last. I have provided several photos and a short demo video.

I have an earlier model Ryobi tool and have used it on all the interchange accessories with out any problems. I wanted a new unit for a tree removal project so I would not have to stop and change the different heads as the project progressed. I find RYOBI tools to be well designed and produced so users are equipped with durable and efficient products. The new style "bump head" is easy to reload and operate and the trimmer "string" is very durable compared to past material. The only negative is in the boom clamp that is not fastened to the shaft and tends to move out of place when loosened to change to a different head. When the grass trimmer head is used, I find the larger cutting swath makes the work much faster, and the smaller, but stronger line easier to cut with. I would recommend this unit to any one who does not mind the power cord connection or consider it a negative in the use of the trimmer since run time is not dependent on a battery charge or fuel in the tank.

It felt a little awkward, so feel out where to put the front handle when you use it, it'll help for long jobs. The other, is the "cut line" lands a little higher that what is initially anticipated, but after a while you should pick up on it. The Good: It has power. It is a salad shooter that ran the entire time on its first run (about 1.5 hours) without a hitch. It also has an ingenious restringing feature, where reloading can be done without taking the head off. Why this is the first trimmer to do it like this is beyond me, it works. The only time I had an issue with it was when the factory loaded line broke and was wound tight on the spool. less than 3 minutes to get back running (and was the only incident with string break). I did run out of the factory line and needed to reload; following the directions I was able to get it reloaded and running in under 5 minutes. Conclusion: You could buy another one, but for the price, the power and innovation thus far I am pleased. Prior to this was a greenworks 10 amp that was broken during use, which replaced a gas Troy Built (4 stroke). I prefer the Ryobi.

My other trimmer's string head broke, so I replaced it with this one...Ryobi products, I think, are solidly made and the prices are pretty good...Although this trimmer is heavy, it is well balanced and easy to operate...THE GOOD: As I stated before, the trimmer is the best I could find for the money...Good value....Plenty of power.......THE BAD...The trimmer head spins in the wrong direction...Counter clockwise...I'm right handed and therefore, hold the trimmer to my right side.... If it spun clockwise, it would not throw as many clippings and as much debris at the operator... NOTE TO THE BUYER: If you plan to use this, you better have lots of protective clothing on.... Safety glasses or goggles are a must....Otherwise, this would be close to a perfect machine....I'd like to meet the moron engineer who decided it would be a good idea to have it spin in the counter clockwise direction... I am reluctantly returning it...At least Home Depot has a good return policy. I hate to have to go through this....It could have been such a good product....

I am 6' tall male 55yo, 170 pounds and strong. the guard is too small or wrong - it covered my pants and shoes and shirt with huge amounts of clippings. it is very powerful but throws so much at the user i dont want to use it. i found this to be too heavy. i also found like many other reviewers that the connection had to be pounded together and will never come back off for other attachments. i am taking it back and want one that doesnt throw clippings all over me. i have used about 7 different ones over the years and none have messed up my clothes and turned my shoes green.
