Questions & Answers

How heavy is it

Asked by: coda
I just received mine today Mar 21, 2018, and the dry weight is exactly 14 pounds. That is the main unit, the bar, and the chain: No oil or fuel. This saw may weigh 11 pounds without the bar and chain, but not with them.

Is it powerful enough to cut trees?

Asked by: Donk
This saw can only cut trees made from wood. It won't cut trees made from steel or rock. You could cut down a giant redwood with this saw, but you would need to nibble away at it and you will probably need several chains. P.S. Don't cut down a giant redwood tree. Let them be. They have been here for thousands of years. .

repacement chain does homedepot carry this chain for ryobi c4618

Asked by: Bobby
Thank you for asking, Bobby. Home Depot does carry the replacement chain for this chainsaw. Please look for either the PowerCare brand (model B72) or the Oregon brand (model H72). I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Ryobi! -Keri

Customer Reviews

RYOBI 18 in. 46 cc 2-Cycle Gas Chainsaw is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 169.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Started easily and ran great! I read a few reviews claiming difficulty when trying to start it. But then I read another review that suggested that the reason for that may be that those people were not following the start up procedure. So I took a chance. It also helped that the engine was manufactured in Japan by Redmax. Plus the saw seems to be built much better than the other cheaper brands. Anyway, it started right up and made short work of my cutting and trimming. The engine runs beautifully, and the anti vibration handle helped too, even though I get the feeling that this saw vibrates much less than my dad's old McCullough. I had to take down one of our trees last week. It's trunk was about 18 inches on diameter. It cut through that thing beautifully. It didn't overheat. But I think I'll be removing the little anti kickback guard at the tip of the saw. I'm no amatuer and I found it rather annoying when it got on the way. I like it.

This saw when I bought it almost 3 years ago as a secondary saw it worked ok 1st. year I only cut one medium tree and some branches. 2nd year trouble starting cold began after running a few min. its ok cuts ok 3rd yr. I wanna cut my head off after trying to start this green peace of junk. I now get it starting ok after using 93 octane no ethanol mixed with ryobi oil mix and stabl and new plug but it wont idle correctly as soon as you let off trigger it dies leaks oil profusely when put up it will cut ok but you have to keep goosing it to keep it running, my other a Jonsered 2050 finally died after 20+ years of use cut huge amounts of all kinds of trees never had any problems starting or cutting.. so now I will get a packman carb adjuster try to adjust the idle problem out if it gives me any problem I will get my trusty sledge out a camera and make a youtube frustration relieving video of it and go buy 2 huskey/jonsered or stil saws

As a professional landscaper, I bought this chainsaw four months ago because I needed a backup one in a pinch for a job. I have to say it's a tough tough saw for the consumer user. It's very easy to start, powerful, well balanced, and well built compared to most chainsaws sitting on the shelf. I do highly recommend buying the Oregon brand replacement chain because it's a slight bit more aggressive than the stock chain this came with, but for most users even that chain is fine. Sure, the chainsaw leaks bar oil when stored. Most chainsaws will leak bar oil. Some leak more than others. My Echo is terrible at doing that too. Store your chainsaw in a tray. If you're storing your chainsaw long term, it's not a bad idea to drain the oil out. In summary, if you want a tough, reliable, high end consumer saw, this one is it. Sure, I saw some junk on the shelf at Home Depot, Homelite especially giving me the crappiest firsthand store impression. VERY CHEAP and bordering on flimsy. Treat this saw right and you should have years of good use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to start, smooth cut and blade holds a edge I purchased this saw June 30 2012, right after a wind storm of 75mph, in which it ripped through my front and back yard. Trees were laying down all over the place, large and medium size. I've been cutting all weekend 8 hours a day, all the debri is cut up, I've got a lot of firewood. This chain saw performed great after priming, started right up...first pull and every time after that. This is a smooth operating saw, very durable

Rated 1 out of 5 by from save your money if you plan to use it regulary Got last years version of this saw - 18:, 46 cc, (looked at this model at HD today and it looks the same) and I'd say you get what you pay for. Always a nuisance to start, no compression release so sometimes the cord kicks back and tries to rip the tendons out of your elbow when starting. My big headache is the mechanism for tightening the chain. It has to be the worse design anyone could have come up with. The screw is straight in and close to the bar so if the screwdriver has any type of a head its nearly impossible to turn it and with a smaller head its nearly impossible to turn without a lot of aggravation and grief. Seems like the chain often comes loose not matter how hard you tighten it. After one year I spend more time messing with the saw than cutting wood. I'm going to invest in one for more $$ that is better designed and built. This is probably ok for doing limbs and storm cleanup once a year but if you want to cut oak and maple etc regulary I'd say you are better off using a butter knife:)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth the price. Bought this saw for some storm cleanup and worked it hard. It got the job done. What sold me on it in the store was the heavier chain. The chains on the lower brands just don't last. Only complaint and would have given this a 5 is that it's a finicky starter, but it gets the job done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great saw for the money. Some of these Negative reviewers don't know how to use machinery. I read all of these negative reviews and it is laughable. One guy burns up the cylinder on multiple saws and then complains about it being junk. Most likely the guy wasn't using enough 2 cycle mix and was, in fact, the cause of the problem. Others have complained about the saw being hard to start. Learn how to start a saw. I have used this saw to cut everything under the sun. It is a little underpowered, but with patience it cuts everything. Oak, Hickory, dried dead pine, etc...It doesn't track through the wood and the motor is steady. It could use a little adjustment of the hi jet, but came set close enough. Literally, this saw has fired up on first or second pull EVERY SINGLE TIME I have started it. Don't flood it with the choke pulled out and you're good. Prime the bulb, pull the choke lever out, pull the cord until it hiccups, push choke in, pull the cord again and voila. It fires right up. EVERY time. There are some basics about using any saw, especially important when using a cheaper saw. Clean fuel. Proper mix. 50:1 Bar Oil Clean the saw routinely. Fuel stabilizer or ethanol treatment if you use ethanol blended gas. Listen to the motor. Adjust idles as necessary. Over time things must be adjusted. Sharp chain. Don't flood it. If you flood the saw, you may as well just walk away and try again later. Don't buy a 150 dollar saw and expect a 500 dollar performance. Expensive saws cost more for a reason. That being said, if you don't need an arborist's saw and you aren't cutting trees every day, this is a GREAT saw for the money. The only downside to cheaper saws, is that they require diligent maintenance. With more plastic components, more could break and you should give your saw a thorough checkup and cleaning after each use. Proper maintenance, using good fuel, and understanding what you are doing is important. Don't let the naysayers drive you away. This saw is good for the money. The return policy with HD is so easy it shouldn't be a problem if you do get a defective unit. It also comes with a 3 yr limited warranty which Ryobi is very good about honoring. If you want a $500 saw, go buy one. If you want a decent saw, for a good price, for occassional use and in case of emergency tree fall... This is your saw. Just make sure you educate yourself on how to use it and don't be like these other folks and blame a tool when the real problem is operator error.
