    Hi Eric, Thanks for your question on the RYOBI 2,000-Watt Gray Gasoline Powered Digital Inverter Generator RYI2000GRA. The auto idle switch is used to control the speed of the engine and conserve fuel. When Auto Idle is on and no appliances are connected to the unit, the engine will idle. If an appliance is added, the engine speed will increase to power the item. If the appliance is removed, the engine will return to idle.     This unit is exceptional, easy to use and appears to be quality built. I used it to power my small, 2.6 amp, compressor so I could air up my RV tires. It worked well. I think it is quieter than the Champion invertor generator that I also own. I haven't tried it but I do think it'll parallel with my champion and give me that 3K to 4K of power I would need to run the AC on my RV. It was very easy to use and the directions were clear and concise. It did not arrive with the funnel that was said to be in the package. I had a funnel already. I would recommend this unit mainly based upon how quiet it is. It rivals most other 2000 watt units in its class based upon being quiet.

    This generator is super quiet when running ! It has simple controls and is easy to start. It's running capacity is 1600 watts with a starting capacity of 2000 watts. As noted in the picture below, it easily handles a box fan and a shop light. This generator should be great for use for tailgating - although it is pretty heavy. It weighs around 50 pounds when full of fuel. Unfortunately, the handle is made for one person. It would be beneficial if the handle could be modified to allow two people to carry it. Also the oil plug is difficult to access. You have to use a funnel which caused me to overfill the oil which in turn got oil all over my workshop floor.

    I was surprised at how much this unit weighed versus the available power being delivered, but it is not something you will likely carry around. Trying to add the oil was an issue as I could not release the outside cover. I found that the tightening screw was a full 1.5 inches of thread to hold the plate on, and then you needed to unlock it from its plugin fasteners. Adding the oil could be an issue as the oil port is below the outside frame cover and you will need a flexible spout to add the oil. A paper spout was supplied, but will not last long. Startup was easy after adding gas, but the unit must be kept as level as possible, otherwise the engine revs up and down and will quit. I determined that the gas tank must be almost totally filled to alleviate this issue. The carburetor feed must be on one side causing this balance issue. Changing the spark plus will be an issue as the plug is under a non-removable part of the outside housing (picture included). A wrench is supplied. Once these issues were solved, the unit delivered steady power as I used this with an electric pole saw to remove trees beyond the practical length of extension cords from the house. The unit is relatively quiet, as we found when using at a picnic in a state park. I do not understand the recommendation that the gas and oil be removed when stored. Can you not just burn out the remaining gas in the tank and carburetor as done with lawn mowers and tractors? Otherwise you have the process of removing panels and draining the fluids.

    This Ryobi has all the features you would pay for a brand name inverter generator of the same wattage. Why pay the premium price when you don't have too? Has a 80cc Overhead Valve (OHV) engine. Fuel tank is 1.2 gallons. The user can purchase a parallel kit to allow the units to be hooked up together to increase output. Comes with a 3 year limited warranty. This unit has become lighter and smaller and weighs about 30 pounds. This inverter generator is infamous for the noise during operation compared to the standard generator. In case there is some confusion as to the difference in an inverter generator and a regular generator, let me see if I can clear up some of the confusion. An inverter generator is designed to produce more AC electrical energy per engine rotation but not in a form that can be used directly. The raw electrical must first be transformed in to DC power. Basically you get DC power from a battery and AC from your wall sockets. In a conventional generator, each engine rotation produces one block wave of AC power. For the electricity to produce the standard 120-volts, 60-HZ electricity commonly used in the US, the engine must always run at a constant speed of 3600 rpm, regardless of the load, or how much electrical power is asked of it. In an inverter generator, the engine speed varies depending on the electrical demand being asked of it, which significantly reduces noise and fuel consumption compared to a standard portable generator. The end result is a portable generator with reduced weight and size, and power that is ultra-clean and using less fuel. Example of fuel savings on this particular Ryobi inverter generator of 2000 watts will consume 1 gallon of fuel at half speed roughly 5 hours run time. Energy efficient as well as being ultra-clean and friendly to the environment. The reason I chose an inverter generator over a small generator was that all of my electronics will be ran from the inverter due to the fact, electronics are less sensitive to a inverter generator due to the signal wave produced from this particular generator.

    Home Depot/ Ryobi Warranty Repairs
    Its been 4 months since I submitted the generators as a set, to make a long story short they would not run for very long under load when run in parallel, and just one would not run my microwave, after trying to track down to find out what's going on with them, numerous phone calls and trips to the store, on NOV 10th they finally said they are being returned, a week and a half later they showed up. I went to pick them up and take them home, come to find out the base on one of them was broke, the the rental clerk said they would get it fixed, almost three weeks later I go there to get some stuff and check the status of the generator, IT'S still sitting in a corner with stuff stacked on top of it, I talked to the ryobi repair guy and he would call the region manager, a couple of hours later they said they have located the part they could not find and are going to repair it. The one generator I got back runs good, not like it did when I got them. But why has it taken so long to get my property back, so far it has been 4 months and 1100.00 dollars later and I have been without use of my property that was paid in full.
