I just purchased a 50 ft 14 gauge extension cord. Ive seen two contradicting answers here indicating that would be fine, and another answer said it wouldnt. So I will ask, before ai buy this mower, is that acceptable?

            Answer This Question

Hello, Ally - Thank you for your question. Since the mower is rated at 13 amps if you are going to use a 50 ft extension cord then I would recommend an AWG of 12. I hope this helps! I couldn't be more disappointed in this mower. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because it's light weight and easy to push. Medium length grass, it doesn't cut well, the cord is a pain, although fun to go back to the 60's. The bag is half the size of my gas mower and just for good times, the bag, even when checked and secured, flies off at will. I've used it once and I see that the blades are already chipped. I guess that's what I get for the price 😔

                      Pretty Good Little Mower
I really like the electric mower. Seems I have to slow down a little bit, maybe the blades don't spin as fast as my gas mower did? Only complaint is the front over hangs the blades by about 6" so cannot cut up close from the front. Love the height adjust and how light the entire mower is.

                      good electric mower
this mower is very light. very easy to push. folds down nicely when done. has nice handle to carry. also, has different settings to make it better for taller/shorter operators. has an easy to switch moving height lever. the only cons are the bag is pretty small, and you have to contend with the extension cord. as long as you're not mowing a large yard, you should be fine. perfect for a person who may not be able to handle a larger mower, or be able to store gasoline.

Good mower, but not for everyone!
While it might sound obvious, I had not thought about the limitations of corded electric mowers before getting this one. On the positive side, the 13A motor is powerful and cuts through reasonably dense grass. But the negative side of that is a restriction to 50ft maximum length (12 AWG) extension cord because of the 13A current draw. The manual states “An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in overheating and loss of power.” What this means in practice is that the mower is only useful on a small lawn close to an electrical outlet. Unfortunately, that is not obvious before purchase unless you dig into the detailed specs for the product. Assuming your lawn fits the cord-length criteria, this mower has several advantages: it is light-weight & easy to move around; no gasoline, oil or batteries are needed; and maintenance should be way less than gasoline mowers. Its 7 levels of height adjustment enable cutting your grass at your preferred length. Although this isn’t self-propelled, its light weight makes it easy to push around your lawn without a lot of effort. One key characteristic of a mower is how well it cuts through long, dense grass. This can be a challenge even for gasoline mowers. This mower turned out to be comparable to our gasoline mower. When cutting fairly long & heavy grass at height “4”, it required little force and did a good job cutting evenly. But reducing the height to “3” in the same grass required a little more force & didn’t cut evenly – see attached photo. The performance was acceptable. Worst case, if you wanted grass shorter than level 4, a second pass with the mower would be needed. One minor annoyance was that not much grass seems to end up in the grass catcher (see photo.) But maybe that is by design as a mulching “feature”.

The Ryobi 20 in. 13 amp lawn mower works just fine for a electric model. Its been years soince i owned an electric lawn mower and this model is a great improvement. Firstly the handles fold down requiring less storage space. It has different cutting heights and the wheels can handle my deep grass. I do need a long extension cord but then again i don`t have to charge a battery ahead of my cutting time when i just need to mow a spot here or there & be done. The only thing i don`t like is that its not self-propelled which is a great help if like me your lawns uneven. Im not good at maintenance, spark plugs etc.so this plug in mower is convenient. There`s a 3 year limited warranty that im confident i wont be needing.

Great mower, lots of power for an electric. Problem is that where I live in California they have put a moratorium on metal bladed mowers. I plugged it in and moved is slightly, but I can't mow with it. I sure do with that Ryobi would make a wheeled weedeater (plastic blades/line) that was battery powered. Would run to the store for one. I have a gas powered, but it wears me out pulling the rope to start it.

I’d just built a dog pen for my pup and the need for a push mower was crucial. I decided to try this out hoping it would fit through the gate since I can’t get the lawn tractor in there. It’s narrow enough, since it doesn’t have a side chute, to fit with ease inside the gate opening. I like the easy adjust height setting on one central lever. That’s a very nice feature! The bagger is also appreciated so that my dog doesn’t track the grass with him back into the house. Operation is fairly straightforward; push button - pull lever - mow. Be sure you use the cord retention hook. Only minor assembly of the handle to the unit is required. My only fear was running over the cord. In my video, I came close at the end of it to nearly running the cord over. I’d recommend mowing only forward and in a back and forth pattern, no loops, to minimize the chances of cord cutting. The real bonus here is no gas and oil mixtures. I also made sure, per the instructions, to use a 20 amp GFCI outlet. If you’re wiring is 14 gauge on 15 amp breakers, in theory you’ll be ok, but with the amount of current this thing needs it’s best to probably stick to the book. The mower is lightweight, easy to maneuver, and has a handle for easy loading into a truck or car for transport. The soft grip handle is a plus too. The wheels seems fairly tight and have a softer rubber tread, as opposed to old gas mowers I’m used to with wobbly hard plastic wheels. The bagger does leak a little at first, but as soon as the grass gets caught in the gaps and forms a seal there’s nothing you can do about that. My lawn tractor bagger is the same way. It does cut well and leaves a nice even look to the grass; no high spots here and there. I think this is perfect for small areas, fenced in areas, small city yards, etc. It bogs slightly in tall or thick grass so you have to adjust your mowing speed or how big of a bite you’re taking if loss of power becomes an issue.

I was surprised to see a corded lawnmower these days. I remembered when I was growing up, my dad running a corded lawnmower… and sometimes repairing an extension cord he accidentally ran over with the mower. That same reminder sits with me when I use this mower but so far I have been careful and successful in keeping my cord intact. I have a small section of grass in my backyard and tight access on the sides of my home making this lightweight mower perfect for me. I am excited that this simple corded mower basically needs none of the maintenance of a typical gas-powered version and no worries of a dead rechargeable battery rending this equipment useless. It’s so simple. My impression of this corded lawnmower is that it is light, making it easy to push and lift, under 40 pounds. It is made for a smaller thickness of extension cord than my 12/3 cord. The cord keeper on the mower handle kinks this one so I would recommend trying a 14 gauge cord. The assembly is easy but the instructions make it seem more difficult than it should be. I also wish it came assembled and folded like it was designed to do, saving me, the customer from doing any assembly on a simple mower like this. The cutting is easy but it does have an excessive nose, the blade path is closer to the Ryobi logo on the front. Ran in mulch mode and it worked as expected in dry conditions with dry grass. I am 5’7” and I think the handle sits too low. I would prefer a slightly taller handle location. Finally, it sounds like I’m vacuuming my lawn. Very interesting because I’m used to a gas-powered experience.

The RYOBI 20 in.13 Amp Electric Lawn Mower arrived well packed inside and out. When I picked up the box to move it off my front porch, I was really quite surprised by how light it was. I was pleased by this but it also made me question how durable the mower really is then if it is so light in weight. Once I removed all the corrugated packing around the mower, the mower was easy to lift and pull out of its box. Reading the enclosed assembly and operating instructions book in the box with the mower made it easy-easy to not only put the mower together but use it as well. I was ready to go and mow within minutes! The handles were easy to unfold and then screw in place. The mulch plug was a little tricky to insert back into the mower once out but it was just a matter of getting used to it. The soft mesh grass catcher bag was easy to attach and remove; however, I did think the grass catcher bag was a little bit smaller than I expected or would desire. The handle on the top of the mower made it easy to pick up as well as place in or take out of my pickup truck. The extension cord holder on the handle next to the start button was probably the best I've seen in a long time. Many, many years ago, I was famous for mowing over extension cords for not getting them out of the way fast enough or if the cord fell out of my hand. And the mower did shut off quickly after letting go of the mower power bar on the handle. The mower did not have any problem handling the grass I mowed. It did not seem to lose power or struggle at keeping up with it. The grass was not excessively high or thick but just a "normal" height so I believe it should be a an excellent unit for the average homeowner with an average size lawn. Because of its size, its electric power, and the size of its grass catcher, I would not use this mower to take care of a property which was a 1/4 of an acre or larger. Running the risk of mowing over the cord(s) or the need for multiple cords depending on where your outlet is make this mower a struggle to use if you're on anything larger than a "city" sized lot. I will say at first, I thought it was an electric-charged mower with a battery but be aware, it is an electric mower - no charging and you need to keep the extension cord connected. But not having to get get gas for it or running out of gas, the good power from the electricity really does make it convenient to use. It is also not self-propelled so a lawn with any sort of elevation could make this mower a bit of a drag - it is more ideal for a fairly level lawn with no drastic dips in it. The height adjustment was very easy to change and not a struggle at all. There was a little bit of a finish problem on the upper mower handle (paint was rubbed off as shown in photo) but it did not affect the operation of the mower. I also think the blade did a really nice job of cutting the grass. It did not leave the grass choppy, raggedy, or uneven. It flew right through the lawn and the mowing process. Another quality product from Ryobi and one I think you'll be satisfied with for your mowing needs. I only ever associated Ryobi with hand tools. They did a good job with this mower to break out of that mold and a good value as well.
