AnswersI asked the question, and am now following up with additional information: The blade definitely needed to be sharpened. I removed the blade and - following advice from reputable sources online - purchased the type of metal file most often suggested for sharpening mower blades, a "bastar*-cut mill file" (I bought Nicholson brand (12 inch) from Home Depot for $10 or so), and followed general advice found online to sharpen the blade. This was really easy (& took about 15 minutes) and definitely improved the performance and cut quality - Our front yard looks pretty good! (Home Depot's system flagged as "inappropriate language" (& wouldn't allow) the full word above with an asterisk as last letter :-) )

Quality control is poor. A wheel was never assembled correctly and came off in 2 minutes of use
This product is too expensive to come from the factory without it being assembled correctly! One of the rear wheel assemblies was never bolted to the axle and literally came off within 2 minutes of use and the deck/blade, etc, could have slammed into land. Even before that occurred, I felt the product was overpriced for what it was when compared to a more rugged stamped product with metal drivetrain components. The blade is steel but the plastic coupling underneath doesn't appear to be rugged enough to handle years of use, but I could be wrong. It's going to be a pain to pack back up but I'll take it as an omen.

Short review - It’s a good value and I recommend this mower.
Long review- I had bought a different brand of battery powered mower before this one. It was white and blue. It had a bad battery so it got returned and I decided to spend a little more money on the comparable Ryobi mower. The Ryobi was a littler heavier which to me meant there was more metal which I think is a good thing but still very light compared to a traditional gas mower. Also it’s light enough that I don’t think it’s worth the extra money for a self propelled mower unless you have a bad back or an inclined yard. I got it home and immediately plugged in the battery to start charging since I was wanting to mow that day. It’s very easy to assemble, the hardest part is putting the grass catcher on the metal frame and it only took a couple minutes for that. I checked on the battery and it had 2 out of 4 bars lit up. I waited an hour and it never got to the third bar but I was running out of time. I would at least try to get my front yard done. But when thinking about it I would only invest in a rapid charger if you have a large yard or another power tool that you want to use the same battery with. I was able to mow my whole front and backyard and still had the same two bars. The power was good and goes up when it’s going through thicker/taller grass and back down when it’s not needed. It may not be as powerful as some gas powered mowers but I don’t think it will have a problem with the average yard. It’s very quiet for a mower. Sounds like a loud fan. The grass catcher worked well and is easy to take on and off. The one thing I don’t like is that the cutting levels are too high. I have it on the lowest and while it’s where I would normally like it, I know some people like to cut lower. I like that it folds to store upright and I LOVE that I don’t have to worry about gas or oil anymore. No it’s not the best mower out there but I think for the average person/yard it’s great!

Don’t believe the hype!
I bought this mower based on the various positive reviews and it’s status as a best seller. What a disappointment! The battery was depleted within thirty minutes of first use. The mower lists a number of bells and whistles but the main ingredient to power this show pony is underwhelming. I will be looking for a gasoline driven race horse mower to compensate for this over-priced hag of a mower.

10,000 sq. ft of happy
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been happy with my other 40v of Ryobi tools but hesitated getting the lawnmower - glad I took the plunge. I finished 10,000 sq ft with one 6a and one 2.6a - and the 6a wasn’t fully charged - might have completed the whole lawn with the supplied battery. Cut at 3” through very dense spring green - spots it was 6” high. Only shut down once due to thickness. Very even cut out of the box (see photo). The mulch plug is a bit of a pain to Install but just needs elbow grease - there are a few videos online of people showing how to get it in. The blade adjustment (up to 4”) was very easy to use. It is very light - I would definitely say it’s not worth the extra money for self-propelled. It’s also very, very quiet. Excellent purchase and consistent with the performance and value of the other 40v line-up. Two other minor nits - the grass flap in the back flips under a bit to easily when being pulled backwards and seems to impact the cut quality just a bit when it’s underneath. Also, the front is quite long - makes it a bit difficult to judge the cut area and requires a bit more side cutting in close spaces than my old gas mower which was more snub nosed.

Busy mom in love
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Let me start out by saying my husband is obsessed with Ryobi! We have sold everything old to upgrade to battery powered everything! I didn’t understand until his latest purchase. I love mowing the lawn it’s my time for peace of mind. He came home the other day and said “I got you something”. Usually when those words come out of his mouth it benefits him. He carried in this medium sized box and I could see it was a lawn mower. I’m kinda confused because a lawn mower in a box seems weird. He opened it up and had it together in a flash. I was busy folding laundry when he took it outside. A few minutes later he ran in and said “did you hear it”. I told him I didn’t hear anything and he said I just had the mower going. I walked outside with him and pushed a single button that turned on the most quiet mower I have ever heard. I was immediately intrigued to mow the grass from there. It took no extra effort to push it or to even lift it over the back deck to the front yard. Yes I said I lifted it and carried it. This thing is light and beautiful!

Exceeds expectations
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this affordable battery operated mower because as a 70-year-old woman, I found that it was too difficult to operate the gas mower I had. Well this mower operates and handles so well and easily that I look forward to mowing my lawns. Of course I use grass clippings in the compost pile, but I noticed once when a few Oak leaves had fallen that it takes leaves up well @nd cuts them. So I started using this mower to cut up more leaves by running over them after I’ve raked them together loosely and a bit spread out. Now I enjoy not only chopped leaves in my compost pile, but some nice mulching material for wintering over flower beds. This is important to me since I’m an avid gardener.
I’m going into my fourth year of using this mower and I’m not thinking of replacing it yet, but I have looked at the updated mowers Ryobi carries should I change my mind. I now own four other Ryobi battery operated outdoor tools since first purchasing this mower.

AMAZING - Read more for details
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Hard to believe a cordless mower with such a small battery can be so powerful. The Ryobi slogan for 40V mowers is 'gas-like power' and it is true. I kind of wish I had the Ryobi in late September so I could have used it to scalp the summer lawn prior to winter over-seeding. I have always had to use our gas mower for this. I had a cordless mower that used two 12V Ni-Cd batteries. A very fine mower and I loved using it, but this Ryobi has more power. The old cordless never could scalp the lawn. I definitely recommend the Ryobi.

DESIGN
The Ryobi is well thought out. My favorite is how easy it is to fold up to take much less space. See the photo. I never have folded up prior mowers since it has always been so hard. For the Ryobi, you just twist two T-pins, fold the handle over, twist the T-pins back to lock the handle, remove the grass bag, rotate the mower on its rear wheels, and roll it where you want it. The grass bag nicely fits between the folded handle and motor.
There is metal where metal is needed. The high stress area where the handle meets the body is all metal. Unlikely to ever break. The one-handle height adjustment is strong.
The grass bag is easy to remove and install. A nice and easy design.
There is an LED headlight. I've never mowed my lawn in the dark, but then again, none of my lawnmowers had a headlight. Maybe I'll start mowing the lawn at night on those hot summer nights here in Tucson?
PERFORMANCE
The 40V battery provides plenty of power for the mower. This mower had no issues cutting about 2" from our perennial rye winter lawn. Our lawn is about 500ft2 and the battery only lost one bar after about 15 minutes. The grass was easily cut and evenly done.
EASE OF USE
The Ryobi is a full size mower, but weighs quite a bit less than a gas mower. Our gas mower is self propelled and that is appreciated since some parts of our lawn has a 10 degree slope. This Ryobi is a push mower that does not need to be self propelled for our lawn.

A Nice Upgrade
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently bought this mower to replace an 18 year old corded electric mower. One of the features I was looking for was a rear bag rather than a side back since the side bag makes it more difficult to work around landscape walls, etc. The rear bag makes this MUCH easier.
An additional advantage of the battery power is that I don't have to practice "proper cord management" to keep from running over the power cord.
I was able to mow both my yard and my neighbors yard - both about 35' x 25' - and still have 3 of the power bars out of 5. So I should be able to get two sessions with the mower before I have to charge it.
This is definitely a move up.
