How is this different than the "Ryobi 20 in. Replacement Blade" that has been available? Besides the obvious addition of descriptor "bagging blade," what does this actually mean to the consumer? Only to be used when bagging grass? I switched to the the Ryobi 40 v in the last 90 days and have been unhappy with it's cutting performance (residential use only - max once a week on small/mid-size lot in the burbs). On every pass I miss around 10 blades of grass while mulching. Could this new blade be the answer? (it does more closely resemble the blade design of my old gas-powered Toro).
Asked by: ryan
It seems to be shaped different than the mulching blade so that you get more vacuum when you are bagging. Yes it could be the answer to missing blades of grass while mulching. From my experience I believe this mower is a better bagger (when using the bagging blade) than mulcher.

I would say excellent, except I think Ryobi could have made this a bit more idiot proof with only slightly higher notches. My husband and I with our 4 hands needed 2 more hands to hold all the parts in place as we tightened it back up. The 4 pieces that have to line up slide around as you tighten them because the notches are not high enough. We wondered if we even had the right blade for a minute. Finally I suggested that we tighten it down as hard as we could to see if stayed in place when it was super tight. Once my husband was pushing the wrench down with his FOOT while I stood on 2 2x4s wedged against the blade and held bolts with gloved hands, everything stayed lined up. I started the mower and it was perfectly balanced. So, if you are having a hard time changing your blade, just do your best to keep everything in line until you get it tighter than you thought possible and FINALLY the notches will do you some good!

The "standard" replacement blade is advertised by Ryobi as being a 'mulching' blade. It certainly is not! Research any mulching blade for any other lawnmower and you will see a significant design difference. I own and tried the Ryobie 40180 in both the rear bag and "mulching" mode. Bagging worked fine. Mulching left what farmers call wind rows - long straight rows of grass clippings. Mulching is supposed to clip the cut grass into very tiny cuttings virtually invisible because the clippings fall between the grass blades. There would NEVER be wind rows on top of the lawn. Wind rows require raking. Hello! That's the opposite of mulching! Ryobi PLEASE manufacture a mulching blade for your line of 40-volt 'mulching'/bagging lawnmowers.

Bought this to have a spare handy when needed, for when the existing blade gets dull and I don't have time to get it sharpened. A nice blade but a bit expensive and not in stock in stores (maybe because the mower is relatively new in the market).
