Will this be hood enough to re do a deck with weathered and chipped paint

would this sander be useful to sand old walls/paint prior to repainting my bathroom?

Asked by: mtts
I bought this sander to remove the gloss from the paint in my bathroom. I used the sand paper that came installed on it (120 I believe) and it worked well to remove the glossy finish so that primer or paint will bind better. The performance met my expectations and as long as it last awhile, I will chalk it up as a satisfied purchase.

I'm going to use this unit to sand sections of my old weathered wood deck - for touch up painting. It's painted (not stained). What grit sand paper do you recommend ?
Asked by: Tony
Start with 80 grit. Move up from there (120 grit) if you need to but probably not.

Customer Reviews

3 in. x 18 in. Portable Belt Sander is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 409.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Sander on a budget Another good Ryobi product for the home owner at a great price! I bought this belt sander to refinish an armorer that had a thick layer of paint over the wood. My palm sander was taking far too much time to get through the paint. Unboxing- The unit was already assembled; just install the belt by pulling the release handle. It absolutely could not be any easier to change belts on this unit. Dial in the tracking knob and you are in business. The factory belt is a fine belt, probably 120 in grit. Usage – The bag on the sander does a great job at keeping the dust down. The motor is not the highest RPM but it does have adequate power for home owner duties. The power button has a lock on it which came in handy on my large job. Another note, the motor does not make that annoying high pitch sound requiring ear plugs like some sanders do. Using this belt sander with a Ryobi dual action sander has really made my refinishing job a piece of cake.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sander at an Excellent Price I bought this sander to sand the wood railing on my back covered patio. The railing was stained five years ago and touched up a year ago. Painting over stained wood can turn out bad so I wanted to sand it a little first. I have a palm sander but it was taking far too long. I looked at numerous sanders on the HD website. The price range for sanders is pretty wide, but I decided to get this one based on the positive reviews and my budget. This sander is very easy to use. You attach the dust collector and sanding belt then go to work. The dust collector works very well but depending on the job, you might have to empty it often. While working on a horizontal surface, the belt stayed in place very well. When sanding the vertical railing, the belt would move slightly and required adjustment every few minutes. I have another project I'll use this on in the near future. Honestly, I almost skipped this sander because I thought it was too inexpensive. I'm very pleased with the quality and how well it worked. I highly recommend this sander for light to medium projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deck Railing Refinishing My deck railing and banister is very weathered and rough. My orbital sander just would take too long so I reviewed the different belt sanders. This one won due to good reviews and price. It is up to the task, has plenty of power, very good dust collection and is easy to operate. There is a down side, it has a button to lock it on but I had to squeeze the trigger with one hand while pushing to lock button with the other hand. Over engineered safety, I guess. The belt never lost track once the initial tracking was adjusted with the little knob. The dust collecting bag works without letting any dust leak; it catches most of the dust (90% or more) and the dust exit does fit a vacuum if desired. I found it easy to maneuver and operate. Changing the belt is also easy, just flip the lever and the belt slides off/on.

Understand this is after only one day, but I beat the heck out of this thing on day one. I was making a bench and needed to level off some seriously mis-aligned boards and this little guy never gave up. With the included 80 grit belt, I breezed through what would've taken me forever to do by hand or with my orbital. Even though it's only a day old, I used it so much in that day I'm confident in saying I'm going to be very happy with this, particularly for the fact that it only set me back a few bucks and did exactly the job I bought it to do. Also for those who complain about overheating, well yeah. I had that problem too. It was my own fault for driving the sander into the workpiece. Lay back, let the tool do the work, and it never overheated again. After nearly 2 hours of continuous use knocking away a LOT of material it was ready to go when I dusted it off and put it away. No complaints whatsoever.

I have to say that I had my doubts, but I take my hat off with this tool because you do not have to feel less in front of the most expensive brands. It works smoothly but with power. Also easy and fast change of sandpaper and I was surprised by the dust collection, incredible !!!!. If you are thinking about buying a sander, this is a very good economic option, I definitely recommend it, you will not regret buying it.
