It's because these batteries don't last and Ryobi knows it. Do not buy this mower or any Ryobi mower unless you like dishing out $600 - $700 a year for new batteries. Their warranty is 1 year for a reason and they know that most people cant or wont remove the batteries to figure it out. They know this system doesn't work well and they don't care. EGO with their new Zero Turn will dominate this market starting in February.

Stretch: the instrumentation can be variably inaccurate. The BLM appears to use volts and amps. used to turn off the segments. A weak battery of the four can throw the meter off. I added an on board voltmeter to my mower to show voltage drop during use. I also keep track of the beginning and ending voltage for each use to get an idea of the health of the battery pack. The OP’s question points to a weak battery that can’t sustain a load properly. I had one on my RM480e and replacing the weak battery restored like new performance.

Hi Yardbird, Well after 111 hours of use, my Ryobi electric riding mower no longer can drive forward or in reverse under battery motor power. Also the cruise control button function is inoperable. The machine can only be moved under human power. The battery is sufficiently charged and can intensely spin the mower blades. I also noticed that if the machine is left on, and I get off the operator seat, the mower will not beep, as it once did before. I remember from this forum that you had this similar issue. Did Ryobi ever help you get your Ryobi electric riding repaired ? Thank you.

Its a decent ride on, plenty fast and near silent when mowing. The ride comfort is lacking but I think a better tire/wheel combo would help out with that. The charging system is robust and the battery packs a punch. I’m mowing about 1 acre with no slow down. Aside from the ride comfort and the safety chime when you leave the seat, I’m happy with my purchase.

Bought this mower about 5 months ago. It's a good mower, but lots of things on it just feel cheaply made. When you press on the gas pedal it has to go down 1/4th the way before the motors will engage, making it annoying to drive sometimes. The steering column feels not so solid and shakey, and there is no suspension to be had.. expect a very bumpy ride. When I went to remove the blades to change them to the bagging blades, I found it insanely difficult to loosen the nuts. The nuts had become fused to the metal plates below and started to turn the entire plate along with the nut. The turning metal plate ripped up the spacer's edges and still didn't come off. Had to use an impact wrench to loosen the nuts after that, but one of the spacers is now destroyed and I will need to wait to have a new one shipped to safely use my mower. Oh, and they charged me $8 for the spacer, guess it's not covered under the warranty.

No Gas Nirvana

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have owned the mower for more than 2 years and live on a hilly lot in the Connecticut River Valley. This thing has been a champ and since I own 4 cars and a boat not having to buy gas or maintain another gas engine is a godsend. The battery last as long as I am willing to cut which I can do for 2+hours at any one time. The house sits on 8 acres about 3 of which are mowed on a regular basis. Sharpen the blades every so often and just pull the cord out and get mowing is a relief. The bagger works well and the front lawn looks better then some of my neighbors professional lawns. My lawn is hilly and thick this thing just keeps rolling along, keeping the house looking great. All the crap about bad ride or touchy gas pedal is garbage. Go ride an electric golf cart around a course I swear this is the same ride. I have bought an aftermarket spreader which I will be replacing with the ryobi since I am not that happy with it, you get what you pay for.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this three summers ago and it has been the best riding mower I have ever had. I had a tractor and zero turn before this but both of those needed maintenance and were super loud. This Ryobi mower is perfect in that it does it all. I got the snow plow attachment as well and now I can clear my snow in no time flat. It is so fun to ride. My wife and I fight over who gets to ride it. Low maintenance, great torque(towed dump trailer with 10 loads of gravel), reverse mow, bright lights, cruise control for my 1 acre, compact(easy to load onto trailer), and super quiet. Did I mention it was low maintenance? I love this! Will buy another one if this ever dies.

I was a riding mower virgin so keep that in mind. Assembly of the unit was easy and without issue. Yesterday was my first time actually using a riding mower so I don’t have anything to compare it to. My lawn is challenging since I live on a hill. This mower did an awesome job on my lawn, I just had to go slow due to my terrain. Turning circle is great. Cut was nice and even. I have 1.76 acres of land. I think the issue people have initially with the battery is with somewhat wet grass collecting there. The mower began to sound different so I stopped and the deck had lots of wet grass stuck to it. It took 5 minutes to clear and I was back in the saddle. Going down hill the mower felt sturdy when I let off of the gas. Finally make sure you clean the deck after use. It seems like a good mower, didn’t give it 5 stars because only time will tell.

Headline first. I tow my 5,000 boat/trailer with the Ryobi. I know, probably not recommended. I have a tight garage and driveway so I attached a bumper trailer hitch on the front and had to build a trailer dolly for the rear. The Ryobu trailer attachment can not support the 1,000 tongue weight of the boat trailer... what a surprise... so I had to build a dolly to distribute the weight of the tongue. Anyways, the Ryobi pushed the boat out of the garage and pulls the boat into the garage.. Awesome ! It's a 21ft SCOUT. My only issue is cutting high, thick grass. the right mower blade cuts off so now I cut twice taking about 1/2" at a time if I let the grass mow too long. Otherwise, awesome tractor !

Sticker shock gives way to overall good experience
Customer review from homedepot.ca logo
Overall very happy with the riding lawn mower after the first two months. Many people have likened it to a Mario Kart vehicle so you'll definitely gets looks using it. We have three acres and this model can cut it all on a single charge. I typically do it in two stages just because of the time involved but I've found hat I don't have to charge it in between if I don't want to. This model has the largest battery and cutting swath of the three Ryobi electric models but it is smaller than many gas mowers costing less. However, the savings on fuel and maintenance will hopefully add up over time. Charging is easy and relatively quick. Without the biades engaged it really scoots along quit quickly but the cutting speed may be slower than gas mowers in this price range. The blades can struggle in taller grass so you need to know its limits and make sure you keep to a schedule that keeps the grass below a height that can make it harder to cut. The only downsides so far (besides the sticker shock) are the harsh ride on the smaller tires and the number of squeaks and rattles it exhibits. On a gas mower you probably wouldn't hear the squeaks over the roar of the engine but I just hope it holds up over the years. The rough ride can be annoying on the back of our property where the grass is sparser and the ground hard and a bit bumpy. It's a pleasure on a nicely manicured lawn but a bit torturous if you have more of an unmanicured meadow or field. Noise levels are very low compared to my neighbour's gas-powered lawn tractors and there is no need for ear protection for me. It just sounds like a large drone when the blades are running and a small whine of the electric motors when the blades are off. The reverse cutting function and cruise control are both nice features I use frequently and are good to have. The cup holder is only good for beverages that are completely sealed or they will spill everywhere with the vibrations and shaking. For the same reason I have yet to use the phone holder or USB port. I bought a dump cart to hook up to the tractor and it accommodates that well also. The cart car carry up to 500 pounds but I don't know how well the tractor would tow that much. I'm just using it for brush cutting and garbage.

RM480e Two Year Review

I have had my RM480e for two full years now and it has been everything it was advertised and more. I have mowed lawns with it, hauled dirt in a trailer, and yard waste in a trashcan attached to a home built tailgate. It is always ready to use, quiet in operation, and ridiculously inexpensive to operate. Some numbers will tell the story. 1. 108 charge cycles over two years costing $15.44 total. 2. The mower costs less than $0.21 per hour to run based on our $0.13 per kilowatt hour cost. Gasoline here has averaged over $2.00 per gallon since I purchased this mower. My neighbor’s V-twin mowers use about a gallon per hour. 3. The only maintenance costs have been a second set of blades (now $28.97) so I can always have a sharp set ready if and when needed. The blades' edges last all year and still cut fine at the end of the season. 4. Based on my average mowing time of 44 minutes, the system recharges the batteries in about 4 hours and costs less than $0.16. I did have two issues with the mower. One of the batteries failed after eleven months of use and Ryobi replaced the battery under warranty. The spring on the charging port cover broke and Ryobi replaced it under warranty also. I made a fold up tailgate that bolts to the towing plate so I can haul things as I don’t have storage room for a trailer or cart. The tailgate also includes a tow bar extension so I don’t have to remove the tailgate to tow something. I also added an onboard volt meter so I can see how much the mower is using with each use. I spent $30 on a recording watt/amp./volt meter to track each charge cycle cost. The mower is a joy to operate and it cut my mowing time in half from the walk behind I had before. It cuts so close to things that I only have to do very little string trimming. Comparing the operation costs of the RM480e to my neighbors' various ICE riding mowers/tractors, the Ryobi electric costs so little to operate that after two years of ownership, the savings have paid for a new set of batteries in two years. The battery manufacturer states these batteries should deliver 1,500 to 1,700 charge cycles based on the way the Ryobi electronics manage the batteries. After two years of ownership, this mower has done 108 charges. Winter storage costs less than one dollar for the entire seven months, so keeping the mower connected to the charger when not in use is not a cost factor.

I have had this mower for almost a year and have enjoyed it. However, there are some issues where Ryobi can improve the safety and functionality. Safety first; the mover moves too fast in reverse. My car does move that fast. The petal is too sensitive, and it causes violent and strong jerks as you are inclined to release the petal when the mower surges backward. It is definitely possible for one to be thrown off the mower or suffer a back or neck injury. I don't know if this can be fixed in software. Next, the collection bag frame needs some form of quickly release allowing it to swing out of the way if it hits that immovable obstacle (insert mailbox support here). I motored past my mailbox not realizing that the mailbox support arm extended out.the back of the post. The bag support struck the arm swinging the frame out of the way bending several heavy steel components of the frame and mower. The impact actually bounced the rear of the mower away from the mailbox. The mower height adjustment handle can be accidentally released by bushes and by the operator getting on and off. The handle fits into a slightly angled slot.and a slight sideways force will knock it out. Gravity will drop the mover deck, and you'll scalp your lawn. A simple redesign to the notch to include a stop would help. Also reversing the handle or making it a knob would prevent the accidental leg release. Many people have complained about the batteries. I have noticed that when you first turn on the switch you do not get a true battery level reading. It only shows 50% power, but given a moment and mine will show full power. As I said, my mower is a year old; and it has 18.2 hours on the meter. It has experienced one winter in NW Florida. Once I forgot to plug it in after mowing, but I was able to mow the entire lawn the next time; total time 100 minutes. Overall I am pleased with the mower, and hope that Ryobi will address the first two comments.

Great electric mower
Customer review from homedepot.ca logo
This mower does a great job. Comes with a cup holder which is nice. Very happy with the cruise control feature. Comfortable seat as well. If you have two acres or less of grass to cut it’ll handle it no problem on a single charge Some cons: louder than I thought it would be but not intrusive. Grass has to be really short before you can use the mulcher insert, otherwise it stalls. Arrived from the factory with a completely flat front tire that had a slow leak due to a manufacturing defect. Because there is no local Home Depot in my town I took the wheel to a local tire shop and they were able to properly seal it. All in all I would recommend this mower?
