In the year 2017, it is insulting that ryobi chose to use lead acid batteries instead of long lasting, safe, lithium phosphates(lifepo4).( 3 year life vs 10+ years.) I would have paid $800 more for lithium. Heck i even used lithium on my last ebike, why cant $ryobi$?

The electronics in the Ryobi riders will not work with lithium chemistry batteries. I found a 12 volt, 110 Ahr. lithium pack in a group 31 case (same as Leoch LPC12-100) that sells for $1,075. So $4,300 for lithium batteries, plus the replacement costs for the four controllers/processors in the system. The electronics in the RM480s cost well over $1, 500 for all of them. That’s nearly $6,000 to convert this mower to lithium chemistry. The mere fact that the lithium batteries cost over one and a half times what the SLA/AGM battery powered mower doesdo plus whatever extra cost explains why Ryobi chose the system they did. Yes, the lithium batteries will last much longer than the SLA/AGM batteries for a given routine depth of discharge, but the Leoch LPC12s will last 1,500 - 1,700 charge cycles at the DOD the Ryobi system imposes. Even if you mow 100 times a year, that’s fifteen years or more. You could replace the SLA/AGM batteries over seven times for the cost of the lithium batteries, which gives a longer life span cost than the lithium batteries.

I've been using this mower for the entire summer and love it. However I have one growing concern as I prepare to put it away until the Spring: the battery power seems to be declining. When I first bought it and began to use it the batteries would indeed last the 2.5 hours for which they're advertised. Over the following months leading to now (November), the run time has slowly decreased. As I write this, I only receive about 1.5 hours of run time. I clean the mower deck before each use. Hopefully there is a simple solution to this. Please advise.

One important point to note regarding the electronics in the Ryobi electric riders. The voltage controller on board and the charger limit the pack discharge down to 36 volts. That means you can’t discharge the battery pack more than 30%, as the system simply shuts down when the pack voltage drops below 36 volts. According to the battery manufacturer (Leoch) this form of management should deliver 1,500 to 1,700 charge cycles for the SLA/AGM batteries. How many times a year do you mow? My RM480e just passed 100 charge cycles ( including two winters of storage cycles) and still uses only about 3% of the available 15 volt charge during over an hour of mowing. The cost of operation savings over an ICE rider will pay for new batteries in two years of use.

I understand your traction issue. My neighbor has voiced a traction issue with his RM480ex when the pavement is icy. I suggested adding some weight at the rear. I suggested using a tailgate like mine with a hundred pounds of weights on it. Another neighbor just bought a Craftsman ICE front engine rider with a snow blade on it. We’ll see hoe well it does on the next snowfall.

I haven’t looked but I assume they are staggered fore/aft (one blade an inch or so farther forward than the other) to allow the needed overlap. It’s just geometry : )...
