I read a review that the battery is right where the forearm rests and it makes the forearm hot. Is that true? Is the other power head better that looks like it has the battery in front of the forearm and not behind it?

Did Ryobi Outdoors actually answer that??? TEST YOUR PRODUCT! Yes, this new trimmer BURNS your arm. I love Ryobi products, have a mower, blower, trimmer etc etc and will keep buying their products but will return this NEW version of their 40V trimmer after only one use. It will be recalled or replaced with a new model (perhaps why the price has dropped from $159 to $129. RYOBI: Please do not say the body is positioned in such a way that you will not burned. Completely not true. Did you even see the other responses above?

I have the Ryobi Mower with a 40-Volt 5.0 Ah Battery. Could this battery be used on this String Trimmer and the 4.0 Ah used with the mower?
Asked by: Trish
Hi Trish! Yes, this battery from your mower will work on the string trimmer and vice versa. All Ryobi 40V batteries are compatible with other Ryobi 40V tools. Thanks for the question!

40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Attachment Capable String Trimmer, 4.0 Ah Battery and Charger Included is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 1924.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Constant Overheating I was pleased with the previous version of this trimmer and already owned 4 batteries so I decided to get this new version. Under light use it works great and the battery life is reasonable with the 4ah battery. Unfortunately a design change has made the trimmer almost unusable for me. The motor and battery are stacked just above the trigger handle. On the previous model the motor was below and the battery above. With the battery and motor stacked, the heat generated from the working motor and discharging battery has less surface area to dissipate so it builds up more. This causes the motor to overheat constantly while edging or cutting tall grass. When it cuts out, you have to release the trigger and wait 4-5 seconds before trying to squeeze the trigger again otherwise it doesn’t start up. Also, the hot motor is often right next to my right forearm while using. The heat is very uncomfortable bordering on painful. This redesign has made this trimmer almost unusable for me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wanted to love the 40volt Ryobi string trimmer. ... I wanted to love the 40volt Ryobi string trimmer. Especially because I've had their 18volt single line trimmer for 9 years and it still runs great. The pros: Sturdy feel, solid construction, good battery life, adequate power. The cons: awkward to hold and operate. The straight shaft design coupled with the fact that the trimmer line exits the reel toward the higher end of the reel does not allow you to trim short enough. Therefore, you angle the trimmer head downward which moves the rear end higher. The rear, which is where the motor is housed would press on my tricep/elbow area. The motor is hot! Either curve the shaft at the bottom, or shorten the "bump feed" thickness so the string line doesnt operate so high off the grass when holding the trimmer in a normal position. Poor design flaw. Other reviewers experienced what i have. FYI - I'm 5'9, not tall, but not short, so my height isn't the issue. All other Ryobi tools are great- this one, not so much.

I like the size and position of the guard at the bottom as it does not pick up rocks. My property has some rocks and gravel and I have killed two previous string trimmers of another brand when the guard held in gravel that beat the string head to pieces, and no replacement part was available. I am using the trimmer on heavier than recommended ranch land and it is holding up. I am a senior woman. The trimmer is a bit heavy, but I can run it an hour before I need to put it down. My only issues are the motor heats up quite a bit, uncomfortable under my right arm when running it. If I got a sling to cary the trimmer, it would solve this issue. Also, I found it awkward to attach the attachment of the string head to the section that has the motor. Maybe better with two people, but I did manage to jam it together, it works and I do not plan to take it apart for other attachments. Overall, I am happy with the Ryobi string trimmer.

Had the prior model and the plastic base on it cracked so I figured I should invest in the "new" and "Improved" version. Was advertised as lighter and better cutting due to the dual line capability. Definitley not lighter and just average on the cut. It is noticeably louder and definitely feels more powerful. However, I also found out that they switched to a new style of battery (not just more power or bigger but a totally new design which is not compatible the Ryobi blower, saw and mower I also have. It is noticeably longer, heavier and weighted unevenly to the bottom of the unit, making it uncomfortable to hold in your hands for long period of time. It is also does not have an auto thread or self thread feature from the handle as the other version did. This means for you to rethread, you have to stop edging, turn it upside down and push the base in. Very inconvenient. In hindsight, I would have been better off trying to find the replacement part instead of this new trimmer.

First, tired of dealing with my 2-cycle trimmer, mixing gas and oil, noise, and smoke. Second, it is compatible with my edger and brush cutting attachments. Third, my yard is approximately .25 acre. Four, the 40v 4ah battery does the trick for edging the curb, sidewalk, and driveway. Last, i also own the Ryobi 40v 14" chainsaw. So on the first use, I edged all of my curbs, driveway, and sidewalks twice! Then used the string trimmer to clean up the backyard. Then I grabbed the chainsaw and made approximately 30 cuts. Still had two bars of power remaining on the battery. All that in approx 1 hour. My two biggest concerns with other cordless products was quality of the battery life and compatibility with my existing attachments. Very affordable, very efficient on my time, and quiet enough that I can actually use it early in the morning instead of waiting until 9:00am on Saturday. Your neighbors will appreciate that point. Added bonus is the USB port to charge your devices.

This string trimmer was easy to assemble and the instructions were very easy to follow, not that much instruction was needed, it is very straight forward. However, the biggest surprise was the performance, this weed eater is a beast. I had serious doubts about a battery operated weed eater being able to handle waist high weeds and tough string grass but it does. The motor seems to have as much torque as my gas operated trimmer and the 40 volt battery lasts over 2 hours of light to medium yard work and about 1 hour and 15 minutes of heavy work through waist high weeds and grass and it gets a lot done in that time. The outstanding performance of this Ryobi trimmer combined with the simplicity of operation makes me a lifetime fan. No more gas/oil mix, no more tune ups, spark plugs and burned skin from getting too close to the exhaust. This trimmer is easily comparable to any $200 gas trimmer without all the mess of gas, oil and all that goes with it. With battery operated tools like this, I will never go back to gas trimmers.

I purchased this to make walking path trails in my yard, and for my dog's dog run up and down a slope in my yard that I am working on. The length of the pole helps make a wide trail easily. The string is easy to pull out and extend. This is the first string trimmer I like. I would normally make a three foot path with a regular trimmer, but I can easily make a five foot to eight foot path with this Ryobi 40V battery powered trimmer. It has a lot of power and can combat the weeds without a problem, and I use the 4AH battery, and purchased an extra battery. The trimmer was easy to assemble. It gets low to the ground and has an accurate cut and edger, so the vegetation takes longer to grow back. After I use this, I use my simple Sun Joe electric cord mower that I can go out at least 200 feet with on a 10 gauge electric cord, and this creates a very low even terrain path that takes longer to grow back. Just great.

I had to use the spool bump once and it did work but I haven't used it enough to give enough info on that. I like it and I am glad I bought it especially since it takes attachments. The problem I am having is it is pretty long. I am doing an overgrown border and I want to really cut those weeds down to the ground. Since I am so short 5'1" I have to kind of lift the trimmer upward to really get the angle I need, its not the machines fault, I am just short. It isn't too heavy for me which was a concern but that isn't a problem. When you lift it up in the store you might think it will be too heavy but once you start working you will find you can do it. If I was going to use it to edge my lawn I don't think I could do it, I don't think I could get that angle and hold it for the length of my lawn. I did buy the edger attachment for that (sorry can't talk about the edger, I haven't used it yet)
