Questions & Answers

How long will the battery run on one charge?

For typical trimming and edging, how long with the battery last on one charge?
Asked by: Bobo
The “time” is hard to judge as we all use it differently. I just used mine for the first time. It is the 2.6 ah battery. I live on a corner And need to do the curb all the way around, both sides of the drive, around the house foundation and inside and outside our fence. My old gas trimmer would use just over 1/2 tank for this. The fuel gauge on the battery was at a 1/4. Now, it might have been near dead but it did what I needed to do.

Asked by: Rayjohn
Great question, Rayjohn...Since it seems as if you are in need of a warranty diagnosis, you may want to bring your tool in to the nearest authorized service center. You can locate your local Authorized Service Center by visiting https://www.ryobitools.com/support/service-centers or by calling RYOBI Customer Service at 800-860-4050 for assistance. Please be sure to bring in the tool, the battery, and the charger as well, if the item is battery operated. You can also bring the tool in to the nearest Home Depot's Tool Rental Center and have them diagnose the tool there in store. If Home Depot does not have the Tool Rental Center, they will be able to send the unit out for a repair diagnosis by shipping it to a service center for you. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in RYOBI! -Keri

Where do you get the Connexion attachments

As far as I can tell, Home Depot doesn't sell them. So where do you find them?
Asked by: MS
Lots of people who answered this don't understand that "connexion" and "expand-it" attachments are not interchangeable. This unit has the motor at the trimmer end not on the handle. There is no drive shaft only electrical wires that go from the switch to the drive motor. Expand-it attachments have a half drive shaft in the extension.

Customer Reviews

RYOBI 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Battery String Trimmer/Edger (Tool Only) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3519.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great idea, but...... I drove all over town to find a HD that had this model in stock. I had read a few of the reviews, and decided this one was the way to go. Keep in mind, I don't have a huge yard, so I should have been able to get all of the trimming and edging finished on one charge. But, the charge was not the problem...(the battery's pretty awesome!) The problem, is that I had to stop every 45 seconds to release more string. Edging uses quite a bit more string than trimming does, and since there's only ONE string - (instead of 2 like my old 2 cycle), the string gets used up VERY quickly. (If anyone's wondering, it uses the .06 string.) Due to the wheel on the edger, the string HAS to be on the longer side or it won't even come close to the ground. After an hour and a half, the battery was done, and I had only completed half of my walkway. I still had the driveway and curbs to do. Needless to say, for the price I paid, it was SO not worth it. It went back to HD, and I bought a 2 cycle Ryobi.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wanted this to work Semi happy with my cheap $80 cordless, so I thought I would go buy what I thought would the best. A 40v cordless, wow! But I should have listened to the other reviews complaining about the lack of line feed. 40 volts is USELESS when you have no line. The line will not advance per instrctions. Period. I spend more time tipping this thing upside down, tapping on the black tab & trying to pull line out manually than I do actually using this trimming grass. Edging lasts about 3 seconds after you hit anything other than grass. I have concrete curbing all around my yard and I do bump up on the concrete. The line snaps instantly.Tip it upside down, try to trigger the black tab (again) while pulling line out manually....... I am VERY disappointed in this expensive useless piece of yard equipment. The only thing stopping me from taking it back was I made the mistake of tossing the box it came in immediately. Don't waste your money on this till Ryobu gets it right and stops using the public as test pilots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for homeowner; great capacity improvement over 24V I have previously owned the 24 volt version of this trimmer. I was perfectly happy with it, but couldn't resist upgrading to this 40 volt version. This is, for all intents and purposes, the same trimmer with greater run time, for better and for worse. With the 24 volt version, I would finish my yard with just 1/4 of the battery charge remaining. With the 40 volt version, I finished my hard with 3/4 of the charge remaining! I am not certain if the motor power is any different - from the outside, the appearance is the same, but that means very little. With the 24 volt version, I did encounter some tall grass that was difficult to get through. I have not found any grass that the 40 volt version has any difficulty with. Every other important aspect of the 24V version is the same hear. The automatic line feed is the same. (I have not had any line feed issue either with the 24V or the 40V version.) The edging feature works the same way and this is a good thing - this is the first edger that I have used that makes my lousy skills look passable.

The arm holding the handle cramped up a bit after extended use. Also, for some reason I thought it would be easier to keep a straight line when operating in the edging configuration, but that’s on me I suppose. If I could do it over, I'd probably forgo the edging feature to save some money and pick up an old school/manual blade edger for a neater result. That said, the trimmer worked well with the 40v battery I use for my Ryobi mower. It's plenty powerful and last long enough for me to trim my medium size front and back yard in a single go. I'm also still using the line that came with the trimmer and haven't had any unspooling issues yet, even while edging (which happened all the time with my last budget trimmer). I don't have any experience with gas powered trimmers, but I can't imagine they work any better than this unit does--for my needs anyway.

I have to admit that I am disappointed with my recent purchase of the 40-Volt String Trimmer. Battery life for me has been only about 30 minutes of continuous use. Longer grasses get wound around the head frequently requiring me stop to clear it and the string doesn't clear the weeds as well as my gas powered trimmer. I do enjoy not having to deal with fuel and temperamental starting that you have to put up with on gas trimmers, but the 40 volt trimmer needs to spin faster or carry a thicker string since the cutting power just isn't there. I'd also like to see something covering the gap at the rotating head or some knife system to cut the weeds when they start wrapping. The constant "stop and clear" gets pretty frustrating. I am including a picture of the grass wrap and the design of the head which promotes the wrapping. The gap between the rotating head and stationary part of the head is quite large. There is a cut-out in the rotating part which promotes grabbing the grass.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from THIS WOULD BE A GREAT TRIMMER IF ONLY??? No. 1 - My First 40v was the original $189.00 version from Home Depot about 6 months after they hit the market. Worked as designed for 8 yard trimmings and then the variable switch failed. All I had was Zero RPM and MAX RPM. No in-between. Traded it in at Home Depot - within 90 days. No. 2 - Good this time for Four yard trimmings and the variable switch failed again. Zero too Max RPM only. Traded in another one. No. 3 - Purchased a new one and traded the bad one in for the latest newest designed version, Now $159.00, and thought maybe, just maybe they came out with a better variable speed switch. Well the Switch assembly was redesigned but guess what. Fails again after Five yard trimmings. No. 4 - Same thing. Traded it in, and today, after just Three yard trimmings Zero to Max RPM once again. This time being real tired of being a $ hit magnet, I am going to Radio Shack to purchase a variable speed switch or a potentiometer and rig this thing myself. I like the machine but I just can’t find one that functions as designed.

The first one broke after one summer of weekly use. The plastic screws that hold the guard in place will loosen from vibration and usage over time and eventually break. I did attempt using the warranty but it was a pain in the butt. Takes too long. You get the run around. BUT - it works well when not broken. I bought another one and it's about to break any time now. You can probably get one good year out of it before it breaks. It works well for what I needed. Sidewalks and driveway edging but it uses A LOT of string and they're $20 for 3 spools. I'm going a different direction when this one breaks. ALso, the automatic string feeder is comical. If you take your finger off the power trigger as you walk your property and press it again to cut more grass in a different location it will feed string and tear up the guard.

A plant guard keeps you away from edging and other objects that can chew up the line faster. A plant guard also rides the grove along the sidewalk while edging. Helping you keep your line. The the way the auto feed works is no upgrade to this trimmer. Every time you let up on the trigger it feeds line. A bump feed is more efficient than this particular design. It is well balanced and comfortable to use.The battery charger sits atop the battery. I dislike this type charger. Most chargers the battery sits on top the charger. The picture shows a charger that the battery sits on top. The charging, ready and problem light is all in one light .Confusing to know if the battery is charged or what may be wrong. The battery has a button on it you press to see state of charge. This is a helpful feature. The charger has a USB port if you have to charge your phone from the battery alone or while being charged. The single line is great for home use. I found dual line trimmers just tear up things faster if you make a mistake. Another reason for a plant guard. The line spool is of average size. The small spool size is what steered me away from Works brand trimmers. It took me over six months to catch this in stock. I was not notified like I requested from HD on line. I just caught it available by chance. Some things I don't like, but overall I like it.
