Questions & Answers

How long will the battery run on one charge?

For typical trimming and edging, how long with the battery last on one charge?
Asked by: Bobo
The “time” is hard to judge as we all use it differently. I just used mine for the first time. It is the 2.6 ah battery. I live on a corner And need to do the curb all the way around, both sides of the drive, around the house foundation and inside and outside our fence. My old gas trimmer would use just over 1/2 tank for this. The fuel gauge on the battery was at a 1/4. Now, it might have been near dead but it did what I needed to do.

this is a Robi cordless
Asked by: Rayjohn
Great question, Rayjohn...Since it seems as if you are in need of a warranty diagnosis, you may want to bring your tool in to the nearest authorized service center. You can locate your local Authorized Service Center by visiting https://www.ryobitools.com/support/service-centers or by calling RYOBI Customer Service at 800-860-4050 for assistance. Please be sure to bring in the tool, the battery, and the charger as well, if the item is battery operated. You can also bring the tool in to the nearest Home Depot's Tool Rental Center and have them diagnose the tool there in store. If Home Depot does not have the Tool Rental Center, they will be able to send the unit out for a repair diagnosis by shipping it to a service center for you. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in RYOBI! -Keri

Where do you get the Connexion attachments

As far as I can tell, Home Depot doesn't sell them. So where do you find them?
Asked by: MS
Lots of people who answered this don't understand that "connexion" and "expand-it" attachments are not interchangeable. This unit has the motor at the trimmer end not on the handle. There is no drive shaft only electrical wires that go from the switch to the drive motor. Expand-it attachments have a half drive shaft in the extension.

40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer/Edger - Battery and Charger Not Included is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3406.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great idea, but...... I drove all over town to find a HD that had this model in stock. I had read a few of the reviews, and decided this one was the way to go. Keep in mind, I don't have a huge yard, so I should have been able to get all of the trimming and edging finished on one charge. But, the charge was not the problem...(the battery's pretty awesome!) The problem, is that I had to stop every 45 seconds to release more string. Edging uses quite a bit more string than trimming does, and since there's only ONE string - (instead of 2 like my old 2 cycle), the string gets used up VERY quickly. (If anyone's wondering, it uses the .06 string.) Due to the wheel on the edger, the string HAS to be on the longer side or it won't even come close to the ground. After an hour and a half, the battery was done, and I had only completed half of my walkway. I still had the driveway and curbs to do. Needless to say, for the price I paid, it was SO not worth it. It went back to HD, and I bought a 2 cycle Ryobi.

The plastic for the screws to attach the grass deflector broke within a few weeks. I took it to Ryobi Service Center nearby and found that the warranty process could take a month. They could fix it for $45+ if it is not covered by warranty. Since it was only a few weeks old, I was able to return it at Home Depot. Here is my take on this product. 1) To use this as an edger, the edge has to be in a somewhat groomed state already, like you are touching it up. Otherwise, the plastic is not durable enough. The guide also does not work well unless the edge is well defined. 2) Automatic line feed is hard to use. I wasted lots of line. Even if I don’t completely release the trigger, if I release it enough, the line advances and ends up getting tangled. I had a Ryobi gas trimmer with a bump head for line feed before and that worked much better.

I bought this trimmer spring of 2015 and have used it every summer, once a week and have been very happy with it. The ability to easily switch from a horizontal trimmer to vertical edger with a wheel works very well for me. The trimmer has been very reliable and using the trim line cartridges makes the task of replacing line a simple one. I use about two and half trim line cartridges a year. Spring of 2019 is when I had my first problem - the battery charger failed. Of all the items to give me a problem, the charger seemed like the last. All of my tools, chargers and batteries have always been kept in a heated garage that is kept well ventilated in the summer and never gets above 80. ... So I left a poor review about the charger. ... However, I was not bright enough to check the warranty (5 years!!) and Home Depot/Ryobi contacted me by email offering to replace the charger - talk about great proactive customer service! I am very impressed as well as grateful. I absolutely recommend this trimmer as well as Home Depot and Ryobi.

It is nice to have edger and weed wacker all in one tool. That’s where the dream ends. In weed wacker position it works great and has plenty of power to cut down the grass. When in edger position there is no guide to keep you following the sidewalk so it cuts a large groove along the sidewalk. Without the guide to follow the edge the wheel slides side to side cutting a wide crooked grove along the edge of the grass. For some reason the line breaks off inside the spool in the first two or three feet. I tried.090 line, which is much heavier line and it does the same thing. It has good features but a bad design. Also, to advance the line you squeeze the trigger and let go and squeeze the trigger again. Works well but uses a lot of line when you are squeezing and letting go to keep the rpms down.

I bought one of these string trimmers last year and used it pretty regularly. Started using it this year and saw that I was running out of string. I hate trying to wind string onto the spool. Took it apart and noticed I still had quite a bit of string left so I thought I would just rewind it. I tried to do it without looking at the directs, no dice. I pulled up the manual online and that was about as helpful, couldn't do it. Finally, went onto You tube, found a video on how to refill the spool, OMG it is a piece of cake. I love this thing. It is so easy to refill. No winding and trying to keep lines straight. Just tread line through the holes in the spool, thread it through the holes in the feeder, pop the spool assembly back on and use the handy tool to rewind. Ryobi, put better directions in your paperwork! Up until I found out how easy it is to refill, I was beginning to hate the trimmer. Now, I am in love.

I really love this trimmer, so much that this is the second one I have purchased. I forced the first one on some weed patches that were way too thick and busted a bearing. Totally all my fault. You do have to be a tad careful with this unit since there are quite a few plastic moving parts. It has plenty of power to tackle any normal yard trimming situation. I love the fact that you can easily flip the guard and do your edging without having to use an additional attachment. The battery lasts quite a while. I can do all my trimming of a half acre lot and have some power to spare. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would because of the way it feeds the line. I end up wasting a lot of line trying to use less power when I am edging or doing delicate areas. It will feed the line every time you let go of the trigger. Wish there was a way to manually feed the line up near the trigger. All in all I love this trimmer and doubt there is one out there that is more powerful, easy to use, and performs as well as this one does for the price. Just get it, it's great!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wanted this to work Semi happy with my cheap $80 cordless, so I thought I would go buy what I thought would the best. A 40v cordless, wow! But I should have listened to the other reviews complaining about the lack of line feed. 40 volts is USELESS when you have no line. The line will not advance per instrctions. Period. I spend more time tipping this thing upside down, tapping on the black tab & trying to pull line out manually than I do actually using this trimming grass. Edging lasts about 3 seconds after you hit anything other than grass. I have concrete curbing all around my yard and I do bump up on the concrete. The line snaps instantly.Tip it upside down, try to trigger the black tab (again) while pulling line out manually....... I am VERY disappointed in this expensive useless piece of yard equipment. The only thing stopping me from taking it back was I made the mistake of tossing the box it came in immediately. Don't waste your money on this till Ryobu gets it right and stops using the public as test pilots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for homeowner; great capacity improvement over 24V I have previously owned the 24 volt version of this trimmer. I was perfectly happy with it, but couldn't resist upgrading to this 40 volt version. This is, for all intents and purposes, the same trimmer with greater run time, for better and for worse. With the 24 volt version, I would finish my yard with just 1/4 of the battery charge remaining. With the 40 volt version, I finished my hard with 3/4 of the charge remaining! I am not certain if the motor power is any different - from the outside, the appearance is the same, but that means very little. With the 24 volt version, I did encounter some tall grass that was difficult to get through. I have not found any grass that the 40 volt version has any difficulty with. Every other important aspect of the 24V version is the same hear. The automatic line feed is the same. (I have not had any line feed issue either with the 24V or the 40V version.) The edging feature works the same way and this is a good thing - this is the first edger that I have used that makes my lousy skills look passable.
