Asked by: freedom
You can add string to trimmer by winding 2 different strings on the inside of the trimmer head or you can do what I did and replace the head with one where you only need to insert about foot long strings, your choice both work.

Great tool for basic residential hardware. Moved to the Ryobi system (from gas tools) for edger, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, blower etc. Makes it very convienent to simply put in the attachment, battery pack and go to work! Highly recommend having two battery packs.

will my ryobi charger i have for my 18 volt reciprocating saw work with this 40 volt weed eater??
Asked by: brdmn
Sadly, no. As with all electrical appliances, voltage requirements for any unit must be maintained. Voltage is to electricity as pressure is to a flow of water in a tube or pipe. A device that is doing work, which is measured in Watts, requires the balance of pressure, voltage, and volume of electrons in the circuit, amperes. The higher the voltage the lower the amperage to get the job done, which puts less thermal stress on the unit as it cuts and this trimmer CUTS.

40-Volt X Lithium-Ion Cordless Attachment Capable String Trimmer - Battery and Charger Not Included is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 181.

Living in my new country 1 acre home I wanted one that would do the job well. Used the Ryobi 40 volt X cordless for the first time the other day. Definitely had some weight to it but it worked really well and still had more power left when I was done and on only1 battery. Yay! After only one use can’t address any long term issues but if it continues to perform for a few years the way it did the first time I will be totally satisfied. It is well made and sturdy. I like that I can break it down for storage. The ring on the cap for the lower shaft broke when the shaft slipped and hit the floor so I won’t be hanging it up. But it’s no big deal. It doesn’t affect the performance of the machine. It is simply a cap to protect the shaft and hang it up when clipped in place. Again, no biggie. Pricey but worth it as far as I am concerned.

I bought this trimmer after having poor success with a previous Ryobi thinking that maybe the higher price came with a better product. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I don't know what it is with these things, but keeping them stringed always seems to be an issue. You can find how-to videos on YouTube for stringing this particular version correctly, but you will likely STILL have to stop in the middle of jobs to pull the cap off in order to unbind the string. And yes, I bought the Ryobi Premium Spiral .080 line and not some cheap stuff either. Just as with the pre-wound spools on the cheaper models, I still spend WAY too much time disassembling the spool mid-job. Bumping often doesn't release it as it should. While the trimmer itself is sturdy and well constructed, if the spool has to be fussed with all the time, it doesn't matter how nice the product is...

I want to give this 5 stars, and up until this week, I probably would have. To be clear, the product works great, until you have a problem. Last summer I bought the hedge trimmer that uses the same battery and charger (battery and charger came with the hedge trimmer). I was pretty happey with it, and then last December, my parents bought me this string trimmer. I thought it would be a perfect alternative to the multiple, corded pieces of lawn equipment I had used in the past. Over the last few months, I proceeded to get additional attachments (edger, blower, and pole saw). Everything worked great, until it didn't. A couple of days ago while doing my lawn and switching out attachments, the clamp that holds the attachments in place would no longer tighten. I have been using these since March, just a few months. If the attachments will not stay attached, then it basically renders the whole thing useless. So I call Ryobi, as this is supposed to be under a 5 year warranty. I live in the Dallas area, and they tell me the closest authorized repair center is 45 minutes away. This seems kind of weird to me, a company like Roybi and a city the size of Dallas and I have to drive across town to get it serviced? So I drive out to this place only to be told that I need to allow up to 4 weeks (yes 4 weeks!) for Ryobi to approve the repair. They proceed to tell me that Ryobi has one person, in the entire country, that reviews and processes their warranty claims. They tell me that most companies get claims processed within 3-4 days, but Ryobi is extremely slow about it. Oh, and they also tell me the lack of shops willing to work on their products is due to this very reason. Most businesses do not want to mess with them. So, it's June, height of mowing season, I have not even had this for a full year, and it already needs to be repaired. And now, I am left to borrow lawn equipment from family or friends for the next month of so until I get this back. I would say that's a tad ridiculous. Long story short, great tools, but if you have problems, good luck.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Falls Short Of Expectations I purchased the 40 Volt string trimmer to replace the Kobalt 40 Volt string trimmer I've been using for about a year from Lowes. The Kobalt trimmer is MUCH better! It's much more powerful, the battery charges very quickly, and it's capable of tearing through just about anything in my yard. I bought the Ryobi to replace it because I wanted to have an entire set of matching yard equipment that I could use one 40 volt battery (Trimmer, Blower, Tree Trimmer, Edger, etc). The Ryobi trimmer seemed powerful when I first assembled it but when I used it in the yard, it lacked the power to do the job well and it took me twice as long to trim my yard as the Kobalt. I gave up and started using the Kobalt trimmer instead. The only thing I don't like about the Kobalt trimmer is that it is too long for someone my height and I'm about 5'8". The Ryobi trimmer fits my height much better. I wish it worked as well as the Kobalt. I might just return the whole lot of Ryobi yard equipment. Very disappointing.

Only had it about two years and then the hole thru which the line is thread clogged up. After a couple of hours of trying to fix it I just gave up. Even before that it was a bit hard to insert the line all the way thru because the line is curved and not straight. It also snagged within the spool a few times which necessitated opening it up and having to discard some of the line so as to start with a full line. It is powerful and works well when it works the way it is supposed to. Being cordless is nice as you can set it aside to move something or do some other tasks. Still it should last longer than 2 years

Rated 3 out of 5 by from way heavier than my last one and way noisier! shorter... way heavier than my last one and way noisier! shorter battery life as well, likely due to having to propel the heavier drive shaft that runs through handle. It does not seem to cut the grass as well as my old one which had the motor mounted at trimmer head. Though, that one died after 4 years of mild use. Maybe this will last longer? I basically have to buy new batteries to have longer run time and this is disappointing and expensive, so, sucks for me. I would have returned it for the original style I had but once used it is not returnable

The battery holds a charge for about an hour of trimming, which is more than I typically need. It is powerful, lightweight, rugged, and the line is tough and doesn't need to be extended often. The manual is worthless, but YouTube videos show you how to replace the line, which is very easy, once you do it the first time. The little ring tool allows for quick spooling of the line. This is the best system of line replacement that I've used. I highly recommend this trimmer.

Using a 4ah battery on 1/4 acre, I can use the weed wacker swap battery out and have half a battery left to blow whatever holding trigger most of the time. When the battery goes back on charger there is 1 bar to 1/2 of one bar juice.
