I read a review that the battery is right where the forearm rests and it makes the forearm hot. Is that true? Is the other power head better that looks like it has the battery in front of the forearm and not behind it?
Asked by: Benjovi
It's not the battery, it's the motor housing. I just came in from an hour's long session of trimming (two 4AH battery's worth) and ended up with a second degree burn on my forearm where it was contacting the motor housing. This is somehting that RYOBI needs to address in the design of the next version.

On my hedge trimmer it can last close to an hour. But you need to use the 40 volt not the 18 volt. And this is no breaks.

Brand new RY40006 makes one alarm beep every time trigger is actuated. Is this a defective unit or is the beep a "feature"? Any way to override?

Customer Reviews

RYOBI 40-Volt X Lithium-Ion Cordless Battery Attachment Capable String Trimmer (Tool Only) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1439.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Constant Overheating I was pleased with the previous version of this trimmer and already owned 4 batteries so I decided to get this new version. Under light use it works great and the battery life is reasonable with the 4ah battery. Unfortunately a design change has made the trimmer almost unusable for me. The motor and battery are stacked just above the trigger handle. On the previous model the motor was below and the battery above. With the battery and motor stacked, the heat generated from the working motor and discharging battery has less surface area to dissipate so it builds up more. This causes the motor to overheat constantly while edging or cutting tall grass. When it cuts out, you have to release the trigger and wait 4-5 seconds before trying to squeeze the trigger again otherwise it doesn’t start up. Also, the hot motor is often right next to my right forearm while using. The heat is very uncomfortable bordering on painful. This redesign has made this trimmer almost unusable for me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wanted to love the 40volt Ryobi string trimmer. ... I wanted to love the 40volt Ryobi string trimmer. Especially because I've had their 18volt single line trimmer for 9 years and it still runs great. The pros: Sturdy feel, solid construction, good battery life, adequate power. The cons: awkward to hold and operate. The straight shaft design coupled with the fact that the trimmer line exits the reel toward the higher end of the reel does not allow you to trim short enough. Therefore, you angle the trimmer head downward which moves the rear end higher. The rear, which is where the motor is housed would press on my tricep/elbow area. The motor is hot! Either curve the shaft at the bottom, or shorten the "bump feed" thickness so the string line doesnt operate so high off the grass when holding the trimmer in a normal position. Poor design flaw. Other reviewers experienced what i have. FYI - I'm 5'9, not tall, but not short, so my height isn't the issue. All other Ryobi tools are great- this one, not so much.

First of all I love that the battery pack is a system that is common to several other RYOBI devices. I also own the 40V Lawn Mower, Hedge Trimmer, and Chainsaw, and that most of them come with chargers so you can always have a freshly charged battery on hand. That being said, the trimmer works great for what it was intended, edging tall grass and weeds. It does not perform well when it encounters plants with stems thicker than about an eighth of an inch, the spool wraps up and the motor goes into over-current shutdown for a few seconds. The first time this happens, you are likely to think the trimmer is defective, but it isn't, it's just protecting itself. You quickly learn what you can and cannot trim. But, one big issue that needs to be addressed in a model refresh is that the motor housing gets very, very hot in use, hot enough that it caused a second degree burn on my forearm where it contacts my skin. I haven't read other reviews yet to see if this is a common experience among owners. I would recommend either wearing some sort of protection on your arm, or making sure you hold the device in such a manner that the motor housing doesn't come into contact with your skin.

I like the size and position of the guard at the bottom as it does not pick up rocks. My property has some rocks and gravel and I have killed two previous string trimmers of another brand when the guard held in gravel that beat the string head to pieces, and no replacement part was available. I am using the trimmer on heavier than recommended ranch land and it is holding up. I am a senior woman. The trimmer is a bit heavy, but I can run it an hour before I need to put it down. My only issues are the motor heats up quite a bit, uncomfortable under my right arm when running it. If I got a sling to cary the trimmer, it would solve this issue. Also, I found it awkward to attach the attachment of the string head to the section that has the motor. Maybe better with two people, but I did manage to jam it together, it works and I do not plan to take it apart for other attachments. Overall, I am happy with the Ryobi string trimmer.

Had the prior model and the plastic base on it cracked so I figured I should invest in the "new" and "Improved" version. Was advertised as lighter and better cutting due to the dual line capability. Definitley not lighter and just average on the cut. It is noticeably louder and definitely feels more powerful. However, I also found out that they switched to a new style of battery (not just more power or bigger but a totally new design which is not compatible the Ryobi blower, saw and mower I also have. It is noticeably longer, heavier and weighted unevenly to the bottom of the unit, making it uncomfortable to hold in your hands for long period of time. It is also does not have an auto thread or self thread feature from the handle as the other version did. This means for you to rethread, you have to stop edging, turn it upside down and push the base in. Very inconvenient. In hindsight, I would have been better off trying to find the replacement part instead of this new trimmer.

After my first purchase I followed all instructions, with the initial charge the unit ran for about 45 mins. and finished most of my normal trimming. After allowing the battery ample time to come to room temperature I attempted to recharge it. The charger indicator flashed red/green in rapid succession indicating a faulty battery. I could get no other result. Upon pressing the battery charge indicator all three lights flashed green simultaneously four times and then cut off. I could get no other result. I called customer service(not impressed). They suggested I return the unit to the store. I purchased a second unit with the same results except the battery would only charge to 3 of the 4 bars. After running the battery empty the same charging results occurred and each time during use when the motor wound down to a stop the bearings squeaked like they had no lubrication. This looks **BAD** on RYOBI....Shame on you guys!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dual Bladed Trimmer Head Attachment I have been eyeing up the Ryobi cordless electric yard equipment for a more environmentally minded lawn care option. I purchased this trimmer, but do not like string systems. I was directed to purchase the dual bladed trimmer head attachment, which does indicate on the packaging that it will fit Ryobi 40V string trimmer. I put the trimmer together this morning, but when I went to replace the string with the blade attachment, it did not fit this newer model. When I called Ryobi I was told I would need to purchase the Brush Cutter attachment and this string trimmer could not be converted to blade. I wanted to share this to hopefully help others, who may also dislike using the string feed trimmer system, this may not be the product for you. The rating does not reflect performance, as I have not used it. I’ve had Ryobi power tools for some time and have had no problems. This has me second guessing the electric riding mower I’ve had my eye on, though.

I have owned several Ryobi products and the 40V Lithium Expand-it string trimmer is one of the most useful. It is cordless, with Gas-like power, it is attachment ready . The box shows 6 attachments that are available for the Trimmer . The new 40V battery will give more power and an extended run time. So that is a plus as well. The downfall is that it is different from all the other batteries of the tools except the lawn mower and have not tried it but they do look similar and are the same voltage. . The biggest hang up i found with this was there there were no assembly instructions given in the box. I got 3 sets of instructions for the battery and charger but none for the assembly and how to restring the cutter head. I was able to figure it out . but found it was not quite as easy the first time through but i feel with time and practice i it will get easier. I will not go into the instructions as i would hate to tell someone the wrong way to do it.
