Great trimmer, love the brush-clearing head!
Only took about 20 minutes to clear out an overgrown area I had neglected too long, only used about half of the battery charge. I prefer using LOW speed since high speed only seems to drain the battery quickly, spinning faster than needed and wasting juice. I bought this due to the good reviews, plus the numerous attachments available. I bought the high-speed charger separately that fully recharges in 20 minutes instead of a couple hours for the cheap charger supplied with the unit.

    Best investment in lawn equipment.
I decided to go electric this spring after fighting with my nearly 20 year old trimmer and edger. I knew I wanted brushless and knew once I chose a brand that I would be committed to it. I cut my lawn, my neighbor's lawn and about 1/2 acre of the common area behind our houses. So far I like these tools, I have the pole saw and edger attachments. I would recommend them without hesitation.

Usage and assembly instructions are terrible
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Trimmer comes in multiple pieces and with multiple different instruction manuals for different components. The instructions in the manuals are poorly written, laid out and incomprehensible to follow. It's as if Ryobi said to Ikea, "Hold my beer." The team at Ryobi seem to have given no thought to how to make it easy for customers to get started. Even getting the components out of the box was an ordeal and brute force was ultimately necessary, including some destruction of the box. Given this was my first time purchasing Ryobi needless to say it's not a brand that will be top of my list for future needs.

Great trimmer for my large yard
Trimmer has replaced my Stihl model FS55R. With a wink and a nod I could get it to start. Now life is much easier. The Ryobi was easy to assemble. Battery charge was smooth, and I was off to work. The lightweight carbon shaft and balanced unit worked well right out of the box. With a smooth throttle level, and a two level switch for higher speeds, it made for reliable and simple trmming. and as and electric trmmer, I could turn on and off to pick up twigs and get back to work. The ability to add string was simple as well. The tool provided makes it simple to load more line, simply install the end of the line, us the spooling tool to wind the line, then install the cap, done. It will be a nice addition to the other tools in my Ryobi Line up including a Mower, chain saw, and blower, which have all proven reliable, quiet, and easy to use.

Battery is different shape from EVERY other 40v Ryobi. Doesn't work in some tools with vertical 'pocket'
The battery doesn't work on all 40v Ryobi tools. It's a different shape!! -- I have a 40v chainsaw (RY40502) that I needed another battery for. Since my gas trimmer was on it's last leg, I decided to buy this trimmer kit (RY40270VNM) and get the trimmer and a charger for only $40 more than the 4ah battery they sell separately. I put the trimmer to use and was satisfied. I went to use the chainsaw a few days later and the battery won't fit!! Yes, it's very close, but I would have to dremel about 1/8" off the top corners (or the 'top' inside corners of the vertical battery pocket) to make it fit! This makes NO sense Ryobi. Why manufacture two different 4ah/144wh batteries of the same physical dimensions, but with a different profile? (Unless it's to increase your bottom line when people realize they have to buy batteries separately in the end after-all. This appears to be a shameless, time-delayed money grab...) -- This is NOT a case of me being confused about Ryobi's recently released larger (and some mid-size) capacity batteries that have a taller chassis. The chassis on the battery in this kit (OP40404), is the same height as the previous battery for the chainsaw (OP40401). The difference is the profile/shape. See the attached image. (Or compare the pictures from this very ad to the OP40401 to see what I mean.) The top is wider, which pushes the top corners outwards, keeping them from fitting in the nicely rounded corners of Ryobi's standard vertical battery pocket. It would have been SO easy for Ryobi to avoid this by simply including the 4AH battery they sell separately. Why make two versions? -- Buyer beware! If you have the nerve to assume the 40v battery in this kit will work with 40v Ryobi tools that have a vertical battery 'pocket' for standard 4ah batteries, you'll be wrong.

it's powerful enough, has good useful attachments and the charger works with my off-grid setup, BUT.. and it's a BIG BUT... the design of the head, where the feed holes are higher than other trimmers from the bottom of the head, causes trimmings to be shot, and i mean shot up all along my left side, up my nose, in my mouth, and i've been impaled 4 times! by stems off tanglefoot fern (elkhorn fern) trimming, and these stems are tough enough to use as pungie sticks (google it) and 4 times i've had to stop and yank these flying pungie sticks out from my left leg, OUCH!! i've never had/used a trimmer that flings this much stuff up my left side, and its because of the design. so, i "fixed it". i cut a plastic flower pot section, and screwed it to the left side of the shield, which doesn't stop anything on that left side (because the line feed is to high up on the head), and now it flings the trimmings out to the left, and now only my left foot gets some trimmings flung on it. now, it's good enough. but i had to modify it. so, i would recommend it, with modifications.

Defective battery in less than 4 months
My 40v battery won't charge and it says "Defective" on the charger (red and green flashing led signal). I've only owned the trimmer for 4 months and a new battery is over $100. Buyer beware.

I have been very happy with this machine. The battery lasts a long time which is good because we have a large, in town property with a lot to trim. The trimmer head that comes with it is easy to use and takes the larger string which is good for cutting through the largest grasses. It also comes with a cutter blade head which works great for cutting through larger brush (tree starts). Changing the attachments is super easy. Just line it up and tighten the handle. The only complaint is that the round handle does seem to move around a bit regardless of how much I tighten it. Of course, I don’t want to overtighten it and break it as it’s plastic. It comes with a charger and the battery charges fast considering the size. We also picked up a second battery so that I can use this for a long time without running out of a charge. Overall, I’m happy with this machine and look forward to picking up a few more attachments to make the system even more useful for my yard.

I purchased one initially and then bought another one. These are extremely capable, on par with Stihl gas counterparts in terms of power. The battery lasts almost the same as a tank of a gas trimmer with no less power. I bought a second one so two people could work at the same time. Also, if only one person working the lawn, you have a spare battery to continue right away. The spool system is awsome and the included blades also excel.
