Q:I saw at least two answers posted by Ryobi that the extension bit AC21EXT can be had for this item and gave contact information. I followed the advice and it could not be bought. Be careful if you rely on having the extension before buying the augur.

Skeptical...but not anymore
I was skeptical about a battery operated post hole digger. Well, not anymore. This thing made short work of 13 post holes. Now, if you are expecting to encounter roots, I recommend the slow speed of the 2 available. If you hit a root, smaller than say your pinky, yeah, it will cut through it. Anything bigger? It will come to a screeching halt and kick back some towards the left. No harm done, blue light comes on telling you this. Great product, recommended.

Compacted dirt, clay and rocks…
I couldn’t be more pleased with the performance of this auger. Surprisingly effective in cutting through compacted dirt, rocks and clay.

Worth the money
This is surprisingly a great bang for the buck! We have very hard compacted clay mixed with big chunks of sandstone in our yard that none of our older gas powered augers could drill through. I was skeptical going with a battery powered on this particular tool such as an auger, but man is it good. Cut right through the ground with ease. I only gave it 4 stars for a reason. Ryobi needs to sell these with a rapid charger, as the one it comes with takes about 2 hrs to get a full charge on. The anti-kickback feature is nice too.

Awesome machine
I bought this auger to complete a fence that I was installing. I was very skeptical at first because I didn't think that a battery operated auger would do much. This machine was able to accomplish everything that I needed it to and then some. Not once did the battery run out while I was using it but it kept the same power all through the project. I was very impressed. I also really liked the anti-kickback feature. It was used multiple times due to big rocks that were in my yard.

Must Buy
Glad I made this purchase. Using the extensions and the 10 inch drill bit (both sold seperately), I'm drilling 42 inch holes to bury 8' by 6" poles for a horse fence. Stops automatically when it hits a root. Battery let's me drill about 4 holes on a charge. Should be getting a second battery in the mail in a few weeks. Six inches of dirt and the rest hard clay in North East Louisiana. No oil or gas to deal with. Easily handled by one person. I work at an office during the week.If you need an auger, I higly recommend.

this thing is a beast

Poor Quality
I bought this yesterday as an asset for my company as well as for personal use. I got home last night and opened it up. Everything was fine. Assembly was easy, charger worked, battery was fine. This morning however I wanted to try it out before work and I didn’t get 6” into the first hole and the bit stopped spinning. I immediately stopped and looked it over to see what the problem was. The weld holding the 8” bit and the sleeve with the pin hole (slides over the output shaft) together was completely misplaced. The bit was only held onto that collar by the paint. Not impressed!

Excellent in Clay
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My Dad always said, “if you ain’t buying a tool for every new project, you’re doing something wrong” and I live by that.
I bought this along side some Vinyl Fence to finish off my backyard. In all I only had to dig 6 holes, 5 for fence and a apple tree my kids had been growing from seed. Our soil is essentially clay only and I had no problems other than a couple times in did “catch”. But, it was nice that the tool automatically stopped to prevent a sore knee or wrist.
5 stars definitely will recommend this product.

Planting made easy!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We used the Ryobi 40v auger this over the last week for planting some 5ft high holly bushes and this auger made easy work for digging the holes. All 24 bushes were put in one day by myself! So glad we made this purchase and now it complements our other 40v tools!
