Questions & Answers

Does this Battery come with a 48volt charger?

Asked by: TonyBatz
It does not come with a charger. I called Ryobi and they had no record of the charger. Finally we found an alternate serial number and they wanted $210 for the charger. After an extensive search I decided to give up on this old mower that I liked and buy a new one.

My battery shows a full charge, yet the mower runs at maybe 10% speed for a nimute or two and then just shuts down. Battery or something else?

Is there a trickle charger for the 48 volt cordless self propelled lawn mower battery Or how do you suggest to store it for the winter

Asked by: Robb
The manual that came with my mower when I bought it said one could leave the original charger that came with mower plugged in and connected to the mower all the time to maintain full charge. However, it overcharged and ruined the battery pack - a few days after the 1 year warranty on the battery pack had expired, naturally. Others have had the same experience. When I got a replacement pack I decided to treat it like I would any other lead acid battery. So, with that in mind, for the winter I fully charge it and I store it indoors in my climate controlled basement and check the state of charge every month or so. If it falls below one unlit green LED, I charge it for 15 minutes or so. The pack has two 24 volt batteries in it, so a normal 12 volt trickle charger would not be suitable. If you found a 24v trickle charger, you'd have to open the pack and connect it properly anyway. By the way, I have had several of those 12 volt trickle chargers over the years and they all fail eventually as well. You may get 2 or 3 years out of them. If you search on line you will see this is a common complaint. One thing I recently realized is that, if the wiring diagram from Ryobi is correct, only one of the two 24v packs is connected to the test circuit with green LEDs. They must assume both batteries will have the same state of charge. From some previous posts I surmise this may not always be the case - one battery may fail to charge when the other one is fully charged so even thought all the LEDs are lit, when the battery is in the mower, the mower won't run properly because it is trying to run on one charged and one dead battery...they are in series with the mower motor to give the 48 volts. Nothing you can do about that with out making some changes to the test circuitry.

I just got a replacement battery and the original charger dos not fit.

The 4 prong end on the original charger seems to have a slighly larger diameter and will not go inside the receptacle on the battery. Anyone had the same problem?
