Ryobi needs to work the bugs out
I had high hopes for this mower and really liked the idea of a move to green products. I have been switching all my yard tools over to battery powered and thought this would be a great mower since Ryobi battery powered tools have been great to me. Bought the mower while on sale and was pleased with the savings. The mower arrived on a pallet and was easy to assemble. Plugged it in and charged it overnight. Went to use it and noticed the blade engage knob and battery power gauge were damaged during shipping, something I hadn't noticed before. Got on the phone to Ryobi customer service and they were very responsive and pleasant. They sent the replacement parts free of charge and I installed them once they arrived. Here's where things went south. Blades shut down after 15 to 20 minutes of usage. The gauge indicated 90% battery life left, but the blades wouldn't spin. The mower moved fine and I drove it back in the garage. Hooked the charger up overnight and same thing the next day. Called customer service and they recommended I take it back to Home Depot as it was new. So that's what I did. Got a refund and thought maybe I got a lemon and would order another one just like it, until I read the reviews of buyers having the same issues. The dates of most of the reviews were in the timeframe of my purchase. This has me rethinking another purchase. I really wanted to love this mower, and did enjoy the quiet operation the short time it would work. The mower seems well built, attractive, but I think some bugs need to be worked out before I invest $4,000 in another Ryobi.

So far so good
I bought this mower to replace my Troy Built 54" zero turn with a steering wheel. The engine blew and was too expensive to fix. I initially ordered the 54" Ryobi 115Ah model but it was lost during shipment. Since my 2.6 acre lot had not been mowed in over 4 weeks I cancelled the online order and I went down to my local Home Depot and bought this 42" 100 Ah model and have no regrets. It was rather difficult switching from a steering wheel to levers but I got a handle on it after a couple of hours. I mowed the 2.6 acres on a single charge today with 10% battery life left. Keep in mind that this is only my second mow with this machine so I am still a novice and my yard doesn't have one square foot of level, flat ground.

Bogus product, does not last
I was hopeful that the R&D for this mower was true but it definitely has a long way to go.
We got the 100ah because it cuts 3 acres as they stated on the specs. Less than a year and it takes multiple charge ups just to cut less than 1.5acres. The "3 acres" must be for thin grass with new blades every time. If I knew it would take me multiple days to cut my grass with this thing I wouldn't have purchased.
This product has disappointed me. I expected reduced battery stamina but it's ridiculous how quick it depletes. It's basically a fancy go-cart that doesn't go fast.
1/10 recommendation. If you have a typical quarter acre lot in a subdivision itll probably be fine. If you have a real lawn look elsewhere.
Do better Ryobi.

almost fits the bill, but not quite for me
Owned one week.Used in Queensland Australia
Give this machine 4 out of 5
1. Does not cut nearly as well as my 20 year old husqvarna, tends to chew the grass rather than cut cleanly. Possibly swing blades rather than straight bar blades may overcome this problem. For this reason alone,I do not believe I will retain it
2.I accept that it is designed primarily for the USA market especially when it comes to complying with safety regulations, but the blades switching off when reversing, then having to go through a procedure each time to cut when reversing of re-activating the blades is a definite pain and a no no.
3. Build quality is very good
4. Seems like a somewhat top heavy sitting position, likened to sitting on top of a car rather than in it.Height adjustable steering may improve this
5. Length of Grass discharge chute excessive and not warranted.
6. Deck wheel axles with grease nipples would be a positive move.

This is my first ever online review and I very much hope to be able to change my recommendation when I can actually use the product. I was very excited to receive my mower as I had done extensive research prior to purchasing the product. Upon receiving it and putting the mower together I realized that my order included no charger (It is listed as including a charger). For a completely electric product this is of course a huge issue. After talking directly with 4 different people at Ryobi I was told that they are on back order on chargers and wouldn't be getting them in for several more weeks at least and there was no other option besides calling Home Depot directly and seeing if they had one. After calling Home Depot, I was told they have nothing to do with this process and that my only option would be to purchase another $4000+ mower and process a return for my current mower. All this by a representative that was mildly rude and disinterested in my issue from the beginning.
I am super disappointed in the whole process because the mower itself looks and feels great but is completely unusable currently as we approach winter and I need to get a mow in on my more than 2 acres of new property. Perhaps it is asking too much for one of these companies to get creative and find a way to validate my $4200 purchase by providing a critical piece of the product I should have had the entire time.
Hopefully this does not happen to you and the many positive reviews I read on the product gave me confidence in making this purchase, but if it does happen I would most certainly not expect a quick result out of it. Very disappointed with Home Depot in this as I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars over the last couple years and there is are other places to shop down the street.

I purchased this set-up about 3 weeks ago (100ah with bagging kit) and it is just amazing. I am replacing a Craftsman LT2000 tractor type riding mower with a 46" deck. The zero turn set-up is so much fun to drive and much more maneuverable than the standard riding mower... even with a smaller deck I was able to mow my 1/2 acre in nearly half of the time due to minimal backtracking and added control. The bagging system works well for grass and even doubled as a leaf vacuum a few days ago!
I have mowed 2 of my neighbors lawns just for fun... and to see how long the battery will last. My current estimation is I can get about 2 acres out of a single charge, but that is with me being a novice zero turn operator. I presume I will get more efficient and the range will be greater as my skill increases. I can not overstate how much fun this thing is to drive... I am continually looking forward to lawn work day now when I use to just deal with it. It is almost completely quiet when the blades are turned off and is significantly quieter than my neighbor's gas powered zero turn... speaking of him; after he mowed his front yard with my Ryobi he is now looking at selling his Husqvarna zero turn to get a Ryobi too.
As far as value goes... I think it is a reasonable deal, but if you can get it on sale or with a promo then snatch it up as fast as you can. I have 0 buyer's remorse with this thing!

Mowing just got a lot easier.
I was a little hesitant at first because I've always been a gas guy. After looking at the pros and cons and seeing all of the positive reviews, I gave one a test drive and loved it. I've only had the mower for 3 months now but I have consistently mowed twice per week since I purchased it. It is literally one of the toughest mowers I've ever owned. Its cut is consistent and the battery holds up wonderfully. We have a fire pit with stones around it and my son decided to move one of the stones into the grass to hold his phone while he made a video and of course left the stone there. My wife was mowing and ran right over the stone. The blade hit the stone and the mower instantly shut off the blades. One of the blades was ruined so we had to replace it but that was it. The drive motor for the blade didn't skip a beat, it's as good as new. There is so much less maintenance to do, no gas to buy, no fiddling with the engine to get it to run. You won't be disappointed. This IS the future.

I bought this product in May 2020, I have owned it about 2 1/2 months as of today. I have used it about 15 times so far and charge it right after I use the mower and leave it charged until I use it again. About 60% of the time the mower blades stop working While riding it and I notice the battery is about 65%. I’m not sure why it’s doing that. I have to turn off the key and switch it on again before the blades starts rotating again. I like the mower all in all except for this malfunction. The mower is agile mulching and bagging attachments are great but bulky. I hope Ryobi fixes this blade rotation problem.

Easy to put together and comfortable seat. Cut is clean and battery lasts longer than online reviews estimated (cut over 2 acres with 55% remaining). Super simple plug in - very happy to stop hauling 5 gal. gas cans! Three items that warrant consideration: The front end is not weighted down (no motor after all) so if the driver is lightweight it bounces on bumps and slopes; you can't start it with your foot on the brake so if you stop on a hill for any reason you are stuck there; if it has no traction (wet grass, moss, mud) it won't even try to go forward or backwards so, again, you are stuck. I slid on a hill at edge of my lawn and stopped. But I needed to keep foot on brake to avoid winding up in bushes so then it would not start and because I am lightweight it could not get enough traction to go once I got it started. Wound up pulling it out with my tractor.
Best for flatter lawns and heavier drivers.
And Ryobi - the sexist safety warnings on the key fob do not endear 50% of the population to your company. Yes, women mow lawns too.

Wow. This thing is amazing! Finished in 30 mins the area that my old conventional tractor took 1.5 hrs to complete. Then tackled an area I hadn't mowed since last year (lots of tall stuff) and it blew through that with no problem. Plus a little more cleanup for a total of an hour. Drove it back in the garage with 70% charge left! GOOD BYE, gas and oil!!

This thing rocks. I have almost an acre and usually finish it in about 35min and with 85% left on the battery. It's a very even cut too. Definitely need it on slow speed to do around things like fences, gardens, sheds, and swingsets, but flat out you can turn and burn. I don't have anything bad to say yet, it is exceeding my expectations, I have used it 5 times now. ONLY thing I had an issue with was getting ahold of customer service to find out when it was going to be delivered, I think it was about an hour on hold then they really didn't have any info for me other than what was on the website. I actually found more information inside the app then I did on the computer website.

This mower is the first step to the future of electric zero-turn riding mowers. I step on, turn the key and go. Powerful, smooth, quick, and quite with the added benefit of no gas, oil, or fumes. Don't ever have to worry about belts or oil filters either. Even charges my phone and lights the ground in front of me on those occasional twilight mows! Just plug it in and forget about it.... until my next mow.

I have owned and operated this mower for 6 weeks. The very first use put the cutting ability to the test because the grass had grown thick and tall exceeding 6 inches easily. The blades had no trouble cutting through. The ride is smooth, the control bars for steering are well placed allowing you to sit back in comfort on the comfortable and ideally sized seat. The mower responds well to the slightest change in positioning the steering/power bars. The design of the control buttons allow for low or high speed driving and low or high speed cutting and the battery power gauge provides accurate indication of remaining battery power. The safety feature for disengaging the blade operation that is built into the seat works well. The mower is whisper quiet when just driving; with the blades engaged in low speed I did not even need to wear noise suppression headgear. I recommend using them for high speed if cutting a longer time period. I was able to easily mow the grass which is in the range of 2.5-3.0 acres on one charge. The mower was packaged well; batteries were fully charged, tire pressure inflation was precise. I have not mowed in the evening so I cannot comment on the headlamps but they appear to be adequate. Charging hook up is easy and completes as specified. Nice cup holders and storage compartments. Came with 3 sets of keys and a free bagging system which I have not yet installed. Mower deck height adjustment is simple, provides sufficient levels, and operates well. Overall, it has a sturdy design that should last well if cared for as described. If you want to eliminate gas and oil as well as noise, this is a suitable model to own. I looked at other mowers on the market but no other existing models were as well built, designed and tested as this one.

Innovation at its best
My Ryobi is a 75AH which I find more than adequate for my 1/4 acre of grass. I have previously owned two well known brand zero turn mowers. Mr Ryobi is superior to both of those. I mowed my grass and 800 feet of highway shoulder and when finished had 40% power left. I first mowed grass in ‘46 with a reel push mower, baby we have come a long way.
Ryobi is a world renown manufacturer of industrial and residential products and most of us are near a Home Depot for service.
I most certainly recommend this product.

I purchased the RYOBI zero turn mower after doing EXTENSIVE research! I compared Gas Vs. Electric, Features, and upkeep. I'm VERY glad I chose to buy this one. I have since used it to mow my lawn several times, and am very pleased with it's performance. My yard consists of roughly 3.5 acres of "mowable" area, with several small hills and valleys and tree-beds scattered throughout. Not only did the mower do a great job, but at the end of cutting the entire lawn, I STILL had 35% left on the battery. Really impressive!
I also purchased the optional Dual-Bagger kit to collect the grass, but have yet to use it. Primarily because the mower does such a great job of mulching so as to leave little to no grass as you mow.
I also purchased a small utility trailer to connect to the back of the mower. This has been a god-send as it has allowed me to do some serious pruning and clearing of large areas in the back yard. I've been able to load up the trailer full of tools, drive them to the work-site, and when I'm done, it's just one trip back to the garage to put everything away. A huge timesaver!
One last note...this mower is incredibly powerful. During my pruning, I was cutting HUGE branches off some of the large trees. I would then stack the branches into piles, tie them together with a tow-rope, and connect the other end to the back of the mower. It had POWER-TO-SPARE in hauling the large piles of branches, and it didn't even break a sweat!
All in all, a very nice piece of equipment...I will get a ton of use out of it!

So my old mower was loud, so loud I couldn't think... This one is so quiet, I can think... think about things like the money I am saving on gas, tune-ups, belts and that I am more friendly to the environment. I just got the bagging attachment and it does exactly what you would expect. Large bags mean you can cut a lot of grass before emptying them.
The ZTR mower is easy to learn and I can mow my 2 hilly acres with plenty of battery to spare. Very happy with the purchase. Downside? No drink holder so I have to take breaks to hydrate :-)

Amazing machine purchased Memorial Day 2019. We mowed down thick weeds, bushes, and very small trees, went over everything like a panzer. So much fun my wife won’t let me mow. We know not to let battery discharge too low but that wasn’t practical as we have 1.8 acre lot. We mow down to 30% battery... I think this has decreased battery capacity but it’s still an awesome buy. We got for $500 off Memorial Day sale. We’re very happy with it.

I'm continually impressed with the performance of this mower. For my 1.5 acres it takes 60 minutes with Ryobi 0 turn mower compared to almost 2 hours with my previous lawn tractor.
Battery life has been very good with 45-50% charge left after completing the job. I run high ground speed and high blade speed with no worries about being able to finish the job.
The mower does a great job leaving a very even cut.
There are a few issues though.
1. There's no 12 volt accessory outlet to power a tow behind sprayer. I had to fabricate a way to mount a battery on my sprayer to be able to use it. I also added a foot switch to control the on/off for the pump.
2. Traction for the rear tires is very poor but that's expected with the turf tires. When mowing low angle slopes lengthwise the rear of the mower has a tendency to want to slide down hill. The tires will also spin when going uphill on some of my yard. To fix this I replaced the rear wheels with some with a more aggressive tread. I just have to be more careful now when turning as to not tear up my lawn, but I can live with that.
3. The drive motors are under powered for some of the inclines in my yard. Even with full throttle the mower slows down about 30% going uphill.
Bottom line though this is a great mower.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE!!! Easy to assemble. Same width as old gas mower, yet 15 mins faster due to zero turn maneuverability. AMAZING CUT!!! The two times I've used it, the grass had grown for 2 weeks each time. Didn't bog down once, compared to old gas mower which would have bogged down on at least 1/3 of the yard. Doesn't cut like gas mower, doesn't pull grass up then cut, but rather cuts what's standing up. Has made yard greener and thicker. Only as loud as a big fan. Rides great and very comfortable. Only 0.5 acre yard, 70% battery left. Seems to 'hang' longer at 70%, than when at higher %'s. Very sturdy build. Friends have commented that it is better built than their 50+ inch name brand zero turns. Only maintenance is keeping it clean and blades sharp. Otherwise, keep it on the charger between mows. Price tag is a bit steep, debated for a year before pulling trigger to buy. Has been worth every penny to me and haven't even had it a month yet.

I have to admit that I was skeptical at first. I read all of the reviews and really thought about it before ordering this mower. Ordering it was a breeze, of course. XPO Logistics was the carrier that Home Depot selected and they could not have been better. I came home on delivery day to find the mower conveniently placed outside my garage door off to one side. I unwrapped the mower and put it together, having watched the video prior to delivery and following the quick start guide, which was easy. It was at 100% charge so I went right to work (you should have seen my neighbor nearly fall out of his deck chair when I backed that mower off the frame without him hearing a sound!).
It took a lot for me to get accustomed to the handling of a zero turn and I'm sure it looked like I'd had a few too many, but I put it in slow mode and that helped. It took 40% of the battery power to mow about an acre and a half (obstacles and all) the first time but only about 15% the second time. The second time I also used the LED lighting as I started around 8pm and was able to keep going because it is so quiet. Without the blades engaged it is nearly silent, and with the blades engaged it sounds like a noisy fan. It is much quieter than a gas mower.
The LED lights could be improved by wrapping around the sides since a zero turn is a made to make very tight turns and as it gets dark you can't see that well for turning. I know, mowers aren't designed for night work, but the LEDs are so good that this minor improvement would make a huge difference. I'll probably check into installing my own even if I have to power them with batteries. Where I live in central North Carolina, mowing after the sun sets is a LOT cooler than mower during the day, and the quieter operation of this mower makes that possible.
I can mow the entire yard in slow mode and it's fast enough for me; taking it out of slow mode makes it the fastest mower I've ever used, hands down. Would I recommend it? I already have. I have posted pictures to Facebook and told everyone who will sit still long enough to hear me talk about how much small engines hate me. If you're on the fence about whether to buy this mower, go for it. You won't be sorry.

I did like some others and purchased this online based on other reviews and reviews from the previous model. I am upgrading from a 4 speed 1971 wheel horse that still runs today. This thing is really zippy as long as the grass holds up. It is very very easy to assembly. The hardest part of the assembly and getting it to the charge area I set up was backing the zero turn "to protect the mower deck" off the metal pallet that is was shipped on. Everything is written well and there are a lot of helpful video's.
The cut looks great I have yet to cut my entire 2.7 ish acres, but going by the battery indicator looks like that should not be an issue. The big take away that I am giving you is the batteries must be stored in a warm above freezing area. It says so in the manual. If the batteries last this thing is a game changer!

I just received the Ryobi Zero Turn mower and verified that it will fit through a 46.5" gate with the chute up (barely). I estimate that the mower is ~45" wide with the chute up. I have to say that the build quality is even better than the Ryobi RM480ex that I also have. I just finished my first mow of my 1.5 acres with this mower and even running in "slow" mode, it was definitely faster that mowing with the traditional riding mower. The larger wheels and more cushioned seat made for a softer ride. There is a definite learning curve to zero turns. One thing I noticed is that as soon as you hit the brake, it won't go again until you bring the arms to center. Cut was perfect and I never had to take the blades out of low speed. Just like the RM480ex, the battery dropped pretty good to 60% but fully expect to get better battery life as it gets a few cycles through it. My RM480ex on its first cut went down to 50% and then never went below 80% after a few cycles. Will update review after a few cycles.
Pros and as compared to RM480ex
- Faster cut
- Little quieter
- Very well packaged. Zero scratches.
- Able to go back and forth in rows instead of having to either skip rows or just mow in large circles
- Much smoother ride
- Fairly easy assembly (took about 30 minutes). Remember to back off the pallet instead of going forward.
- Extreme cool factor
- Larger size compared to RM480ex just makes it feel more substantial
- Welds and construction appear extremely sturdy
- Additional storage bins on both sides is nice
- Seating is compatible for taller individuals (I'm 6'3"). I actually had to pull the seat forward. (see Con for weight)
- Wife thinks it is too complicated
- I think the pricing is still $750+ high.
- Bit of a learning curve. Start in "slow" drive while learning. Fast mode (default) hauls
- Rear wheels seem to spin a lot more than I would have expected on tight turns
- Rear brakes are extremely sensitive. Barely touch and the rear wheels skid
- Don't like that you have to reset the handles after braking. Would rather it start again after you let your foot off brake.
- Unit is heavy ~600#
- Though a tall person fits very well, I was able to bottom out the seat springs quite easily (I'm 180#)

Hello, Lanyx - Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful and thorough review of the 42" 100 AH Electric Zero Turn Mower! We very much appreciate the feedback are glad to hear that you are pleased with its performance! We did want to follow up on your comments regarding the brakes. The RY48ZTR75/100 brake pedal doubles as both a parking brake and an emergency brake. Parking brake: When parking your zero-turn mower, press the pedal down with the base of your foot, and secure the parking-brake by engaging the toe-lock. Emergency brake: In the case of an emergency, pressing the brake pedal will immediately halt the unit. Once the emergency brake has been pressed, you must return the drive levers back into the neutral position before you can drive again. *Note: The brake pedal is not intended to slow the unit during normal operation. All slowing/stopping should be done with the drive levers. Please see the user’s manual, pages 13-21 for additional assistance. We hope this helps! And if you have any questions or would like to discuss your experience further, then please email us anytime at email@example.com.
