Questions & Answers

Can the blade be moved up amd down or should I always be cutting 2 biscuit holes as this joiner does not cut in the center of the wood?

Asked by: RussnMaggie
Yes, you can set the blade vertically. You adjust the fence position and the fence rests on top of the work piece, holding the tool at the proper height when you cut. Make sure the work piece is either thick enough or is clamped so it hangs over the edge of the work bench so the tool is not resting on the bench.

The joiner will cut in a horizontal orientation either on the face, end grain, or edge of material.

How thin can material be to biscuit join. can it be used to join 1"X"s side by side
Asked by: Lonewolf
the bottom to the blade slot is 3/8. Because of this the blade will cut will be around 1/2 inch to 5/8. So the cut won’t be in the middle of a board that is 3/4” thick (aka 1xs) hope they fix it otherwise it’s a great tool. But since I work with 1X’s I will be returning it.

Customer Reviews

RYOBI 6-Amp Biscuit Joiner Kit is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice jointer for the money and easy The joiner worked well for one that I hardly use. I had one big project to create a solid wood countertop, and I was able to cut slots easily and fast. However I have two faults: dust is not collected well in the bag, so I learned to push on the cuter twice and spin the blade once away from the wood to blow the dust away. The technique worked. Also the joiner came out of the box with maladjusted size for the biscuit. It showed to be adjusted for #20 biscuits but it was only cutting for #10 biscuits. I had to adjust a nut on the adjustment to calibrate the depth of cut. Once this was done, all was well. So I mark off for the bad dust collection and the poor QC on the adjustment. I do like the front grip on the front to press down on the plank to make it a true cut. This joiner only comes with a cloth bag container. All the negatives have to do with something that otherwise affects the actual successful job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent DIY Unit - Recommended Reading A couple of other reviews totally surprised my regarding the statement there is no adjustment on the depth of cut for the biscuits. They obviously failed to read the directions, or even look at the unit for that matter. When looking at the bottom back, you can easily see a knob with the same numbers as the various biscuits, so that should be your first clue. One reviewer stated he prefer the manufacturer configure it beforehand, but that is an uneducated statement. Almost every power tool made has some adjustments on them. How could any manufacturer who is selling a $99 biscuit jointer , that can make cuts at more than 25 positions, for three different size biscuits and then some, in any thickness wood you want the use, not require a fine tuning knob? For a DIY'er, this is an excellent value tool you should own. The height and angle adjustment knobs move one another if not locked down, but other than that, ALWAYS test on scrap pieces of wood that are the EXACT same thickness as the ones you are planning to join. Any professional already owns a "Domino" or if they don't, they already know this is probably not the tool for them as they need one that can handle daily abuse while not effecting the settings. Cheers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Joints: Easy and strong If you are able to master using a drill/driver, then you will be pleasantly rewarded by the ease with which you can create professional joints using this biscuit joiner. With one or two simple, precise adjustments I was able to create long grain to long grain joints as well as long grain to end grain joints. The biscuit joiner is light weight, easy to align, comfortable to hold, and is powered to cleanly make the cuts in a second or two. My first project was a standing mirror, which needed to be strong enough to hold a 35 pound 5' by 2' mirror. The biscuit joints especially made gluing angled and curved pieces together foolproof. I saved time - and sand paper ! - as I finished the project. I wish I had acquired this tool a dozen projects earlier in my amateur woodworking career.

As I read the reviews I see that some say that the cut will leave too much slop and they see this as a bad thing. However, This is part of the physics of biscuit joining. Use water based glue and the biscuits are meant to swell up and create a tight joint. Just make sure that your work is flat and level, and clamped properly. It is possible that a few people may have received a defective unit but I think that many of the reports of a sloppy cut is just that some folks don't understand that the biscuit is meant to swell up from using water based glue. Hope this helps.. I am a retired shipwright.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the job I bought this to join two pieces of butcher block counter tops from IKEA together for my daughters kitchen. I tested using it on some scrap butcher block after cutting to size. This definitely helped get my understanding of using this tool down. I didn't find the instructions at first as they were hidden in a side pocket in the soft case included in the product. I also clamped and screwed the two pieces together, with glue, for the strongest connection. Picture does not show the biscuits, but they are between the screws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great low cost well performing biscuit joiner I used this product to join together 1x8x8 solid oak boards to make an entertainment center from 150 year old barn oak flooring. Very hard wood. This light weight joiner stayed exactly on its setting where I put it throughout the entire job. Slots are accurate and the biscuits fit snugly no forcing at all and not one bit of wiggle. It will be a long time before I wear out this joiner

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect for DIY / Homeowner - Build Your Own Furniture Ryobi tools are a good balance of quality/cost for a homeowner. They're not built for everyday use, but for occasional use they will last a lifetime, without the high price of a pro-grade tool. As I've said before, if you're a pro, then I don't need to tell you to look at a better model, you'll wear this one out far sooner than you'd like. As far as the results Ryobi tools produce, accuracy is 90% you and 10% the tool, and I always get good results with Ryobi tools. Mine is actually the older blue one, before Ryobi changed to green; I don't think there is any difference apart from the color. This joiner cuts as accurately as I need it to, and feels good in your hands. The adjustments are easy and obvious. Dust collection is excellent, and biscuit joiners make a lot of dust. Forget the bag, and it will cover you in one shot. The blade should last forever unless you do something stupid with it like hit a nail. This is the kind of tool that is better corded, sticking a heavy battery on it would not help in any way. A biscuit joiner is the kind of tool you will use now and then for just a few minutes, but what a difference it makes. "Biscuiting" is by far the easiest way to make edge joints in wood and wood-products like counter-tops, stronger, faster, and easier than doweling or routing tenons. With a little creativity, you can make other kinds of joints as well. Just mark the spots for the slots, set up the joiner, and Zap! Zap! Zap! - the slots are done in seconds. Since the slots are all cut with respect to the top surface, the alignment is perfect. And the biscuits themselves are quite inexpensive, you can use as may as you think you need. I build almost all my own "crate style" furniture, from beds and bookcases to tables and chairs, and the biscuit joiner has been invaluable. It allows you to join pieces of dimensional lumber together into larger slabs, which can then be used for many purposes. I did a few of the earliest pieces without the biscuit joiner, and while they came out good, it was a lot more time and effort, either cutting biscuit slots with a router ( ughh - never again ! ) or using a lot of cross-bracing and screws. The biscuit joiner saves on both time and material. I use mainly southern yellow pine, #1 grade where it shows, and #2 where it doesn't. Home Depot's "Radiata" or premium pine is just as good, but stay away from white pine, it is far too soft and no finish will hold up well. Good straight dimensional lumber can be edge-joined directly, it needs no preparation other than cutting to length. Make your designs using standard widths, cut to length with a mitre saw. All my joints are glued, I use very few fasteners, and then mainly where they will speed up the assembly, seldom for strength. For framing, I use a lot of lap joints, resulting in double-thickness legs. This requires a lot of clamps - as Bob Vila once said - "You can't have too many clamps." A # 60 belt on the belt sander will smooth out all the joints and uneven ends. Always sand along the grain. The belt sander will smooth over a multitude of sins, as well as remove dirt, dings, and glue drips. For a final finish, a #80 belt, applied carefully, gives a nice even easy finish. Clamp similar pieces together and sand them all at once - it is easier, and they will come out much more uniform. All exposed edges are 1/4" round-over. I used a router, but with a deft touch the belt sander could do this as well. A fInal sanding by hand with #80, and you'll be amazed that you built it yourself. Stain, and several coats of Danish oil, and you have a real nice piece that is ready for the worst your kids / dog / shoes / movers / life in general can dish out. And if it gets too beat-up, a quick hand sanding and another coat of oil, and it is like new again. This is a finish for the real world, where you actually use your furniture, not just look at it. Pine in general and Radiata in particular stain poorly, so pre-treat and test on scraps before you do the real piece. This furniture is infinitely better than the veneered particle-board junk at Ikea. It is built to last a lifetime, not a year or two, and the cost is often less, for far better materials. Finally, when you build your own, you can build exactly what you want, you don't have to settle for the thing you don't-like-the-least. I saved thousands of dollars compared to what solid-wood furniture would cost in a store. You'd be amazed what you can build with just biscuit joiner, mitre saw, belt sander, drill, router, glue and lots of clamps. The motor in my biscuit joiner probably doesn't have 10 whole minutes of run time on it, but the tool has long since paid for itself.

At first, I thought there was a problem but then I "Gasp" read the directions. I see from other reviews others had the same problem. The vertical position of the cut is not from the bottom, but from the top edge of the work. If you let the tool rest on the work bench you will always get a cut in the same place. That's a hit on me, for not reading the directions first. The only criticism I have is the markings on the scale for adjusting the fence vertically. The long mark (which I incorrectly assumed was 1/2 inch), isn't. It's 3/8". Once I realized that, and learned to count to 3, everything was great. I enjoy using this tool.
