Q:Had the 24V (which is useless now since Ryobi/Home Depot stopped making the batteries for it) and the line feed was constantly jamming, PLUS was not designed to feed line in edging position. How about this one? Does it autofeed when head is set to edger?

Answer This Question
A: This is the second one I've purchased...wore the first one out. I've always had trouble with the auto feed except when you start it up. I just flip it over and manually advance the string, or stop it and start it up again. It really doesn't bother me to do that.

Worked great, until it didn't
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the third one in a year. The first couple I bought had the protective plastic shroud break off almost immediately. Naturally I returned it and replaced it with the same one. Thinking maybe it was a batch issue. I've had this one for about a year, lo and behold the shroud broke off again. To top it off, it has feeding issues. I'm not sure if it's the machine or the ryobi brand string but it seems to feed a lot more than needed, causing it to break off and waste more string than necessary. I bought this thinking it would save me the headache of having to locate and store two items to maintain my yard; only to have it cause entirely new headaches. Hopefully they get this problem fixed when they do a redesign.

Extended use is awful
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this a year ago thinking cool, I can save money instead of buying 2 tools. It was an awful decision. The auto-spool feature takes a bit of learning to get it down I get that, but when it feeds more than double what is necessary, it becomes a safety issue when that string flies at you at 90mph (145 kmh). To say the shroud that protects you from flying debris is flimsy would be an understatement. After one use it was cracked, if it so much as thinks about bumping something it breaks. I returned two thinking it was just a defect with that batch. I guess I was sorta right. I was super gentle on the third one, still had feeding issues but it lasted a year before it broke (I expected better from this brand). The shroud is held on by 4 flimsy plastic tabs glued into place. I'm just really disappointed in the drop in quality over the past couple years.

Love this!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am a 61 year old female who loves being in the woods especially during hunting season. The string trim/edger allowed me to turn a plot of land inaccessible to conventional equipment into a thriving food plot. I was able to clear weeds, cut paths and hold back the underbrush with this piece of equipment. It's easy to operate and the battery life is great. I also own and love the 18V reciprocating saw but that's a different review! I can't wait until the soon-to- be-released 18V cultivator is available.

Cheap, flimsy plastic trimmer
On my first use of this trimmer, I cut grass and weeds. I increased the speed for a thick stand of weeds and the trimmer vibrated A LOT. Either the excessive vibration or the constant movement of the flimsy plastic guard loosened the screws that attached the guard. Suddenly the guard flew off, breaking the plastic housing as well (because the guard is attached to the housing). Pieces of the trimmer flew everywhere. In hindsight, I realize screwing metal screws into plastic doesn't work - plastic isn't strong enough to tighten the screws the same way metal can. That this whole trimmer disintegrated on me was shocking. Under no circumstances should the plastic be that cheap. Metal screws should screw into metal. Because the guard is subject to a lot of bumps, it needs to be attached in a very secure way. Very poor quality, very poor design.

This new model is well balanced and easy to maneuver across various landscapes. Quick assembly of the unit from box to yard. Attaching the two halves of the unit with dual set screws instead of the coupler set up on some of the older models seemed to be the ticket for a solid connection. The auto line feature is a welcome benefit. No more faulty bump to feed the line. You will quickly figure out when to release the line for optimum cutting line performance. For me 2 to 3 releases from the trigger gave me the perfect line length without over extension of the line. This feature worked flawlessly providing me with the time savings needed to get the job done.
Initial charging of the Battery out of the box was relatively quick.Changing from trimmer to edger was done through foot switch. This new model is also about 4 inches shorter and a bit lighter. Smooth crisp lines around the landscape looked like it was done by a professional.
I have owned a few different units over the years and I can honestly recommend this Trimmer for anyone that is looking to get professional results in little time.

Review of RYOBI model P20014 – ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer/Edger - 4.0 Ah Battery and Charger Included
(note: this model is very similar to Ryobi model P2080)
Let me start by saying I wanted to evaluate the cutting performance of this product as both a weed whacker and as a lawn edger, but by the time I received the unit there was 1 foot of snow on the ground. So, I’ll be limited to providing some observations about its features at this time, and will need to write a 2nd review once the 2021 lawn mowing & trimming season arrives
Differences between P20014 and P2080:
__ Front (loop) handle on P20014 is one-piece, smooth black plastic while front handle on P2080 is yellow plastic with gray siliconized rubber inserts. Both types of handle are adjustable as to position up-or-down the shaft
__ The P2080 has a ribbed, hand-tightened ‘Coupler’ on its shaft that allows the lower shaft with the cutting head to be completely separated from the upper part of the shaft with its Power Head (and battery). Out of the box, the P20014 handle is separated (folded, actually) with its internal 18V electrical cord passing down through the entire shaft; assembly requires removing the cable-protecting cardboard insert and pushing the two shaft pieces together (the otherwise round shaft has a square cross-section in the middle) and then tightening two screws to keep the shaft from separating.
P20014 Features
* 4.0 Ah (72 Wh) battery should provide the estimated 60 minutes of run time. The battery has a 4-bar LED charge indicator that lights up when the adjacent button is pressed (nice feature!)
* The gray plastic loop type foot pedal just behind the cutting motor head is pressed to allow the cutting head with its guard to pivot 90-degrees, so the little wheel on the guard can then be rolled along the pavement and thereby maintain a consistent distance from the pavement and the overgrowing grass to be cut along the edge of the lawn. Pressing the pedal again releases the cutting head from the “Edger” position so it can be rotated back to the grass “Trimmer” position. This is a fairly convenient and quick way to change back-and-forth… (but, given that the cutting line is used up faster if the tool is stop/started repeatedly, one should endeavor to use it ‘continuously’ for Trimming and then ‘continuously’ for Edging, and not switch back and forth)
* Cutting Swath is adjustable from 11” (factory setting) to 13” by loosening the screw that holds the double-sided metal line cutting blade underneath the guard, and rotating the blade 180-degrees so it’s one-inch farther away from the spool hub. [Because I wasn’t able to use it yet during the winter, I cannot say whether the 11” or 13” cutting swath works best for lawn Edging?]
* More power is needed if the metal line cutting blade is set for a 13” cutting swath … so the battery will not last as long with that setting. The tip of a longer cutting line has more energy … (energy being proportional to the ‘square’ of its angular velocity, E = mC2 … so it can cut tougher weeds ,,, [and – if not careful -- cause more damage to wooden fence posts, coated or painted wire fences, vinyl siding, etc. – speaking from experience] … but it will also consume power more quickly).
* Auto-feed Head: Trimmer/Edger has short plastic thumb lever on top of the handle that serves as a “Safety” to prevent inadvertent starting of the trimmer/edger. Each time the Trigger inside the loop below the handle is released, the thumb lever Safety will reengage and it must be pressed again to re-start. Doing this, however, will advance the cutting line by approx. 1/4" … which can use up the line more quickly. Other reviewers have said that one can avoid this by NOT releasing the trigger all the way to “Off” but, instead, releasing just enough to slow the motor way down but so it does not stop (the tool has a Variable Speed Trigger).
Precaution: The Spool Housing is NOT intended to be "Bumped" to advance the cutting line -- and doing so could cause it to become Broken. The persons who will use this Trimmer/Edger need to be become familiar with how it is operated.

I never really bought into electric trimmers, figured the rpms just wouldn’t be there and I would have to go through several batteries just to mow my lawn. I was pleasantly surprised with this trimmer. I do have the Ryobi extended batteries, but this trimmer works great and is so much less maintenance than it’s gas counterpart. Overall pretty impressed and would recommend for small yard trimming needs.

The trimmer was easy to assemble and very powerful. There were a few things I personally did not like about the product. For one, you need to be 6'5 tall to use it. It cannot be adjusted so if you aren't tall it's not ergonomically good for you. Secondly, it's heavy, if you're not in good shape or accustomed to using doing similar work, it's going to be difficult to use. The height and the weight made it a little difficult for me to use. Lastly, the wheel on the trimmer doesn't adjust enough making it difficult to use. It's really good quality and I like it, but it needs a few minor adjustments to make it usable for all people, regardless of height and strength. Product has a 1-year limited warranty. I recommend this product, but one should consider the above before making the purchase.
Reviewer disclaimer: I received this product in exhange for an honest review.

Another great Ryobi tool that extends the value of my investment in the 18v One+ batteries I've made. I have a bunch of Ryobi tools, both hand tools and yard tools. This string trimmer is very well designed and has some innovative features.
This trimmer has a cool edger feature I haven't seen before, you just tap the release bar on the string guard and it rotates so you can edge along the driveway or sidewalk with the usual gymnastics, it even has a wheel to make it even easier.
The sting is easy to load and it has plenty of power. The string is automatically feed, it's not the usual bump feed system. This is good and bad. The string feeds a little bit every time you stop whether you intended it or not. The cut diameter by moving the string cutter blade.
This is a solid trimmer!

I am a big fan of the Ryobi tool line and their battery platform, so when it came time to replace my older Ryobi string trimmer getting this was a no-brainer. My previous string trimmer just lacked the power to cut through the grass at my daughters house (where I use it) and edging was a chore; I could never seem to accomplish both without changing batteries (it had the older 18V Lithium batteries and could not handle the heavier cutting line). I was blown away with the power of this trimmer: it can cut through the thick grass I need to trim and makes edging a snap, all on less than half a battery charge (at least in my case). The fact that it uses the 0.08 in twisted line makes it a beast when trimming and edging, and the ONE+ 18V 2Ah battery gives it all the power I was lacking before. It feels really solid and has a good balance when in use; it is longer than my previous trimmer which is nice on the back. The trimming head also has this nice feature where you can lock it at 90 degrees for edging, and the wheel on the head assembly makes edging easier than I have ever had before. The no-bump line advance is also very nice, although it took me some time to get used to its having bump trimmers most of my life. I highly recommend this string trimmer; it does a great job.
