It tackles a big job
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I gave the Ryobi cordless 18V “One+” a heavy workout and it was everything I was expecting. I reached the age that my big gas trimmer with attachments makes my back hurt and I bought this Ryobi trimmer plus the edger attachment knowing I would have to go through a few batteries to get my large yard done, but hopefully ease the strain. I have two acres with 16 trees and other obstacles to weed trim around, plus a 100 foot driveway to edge down and back and 90 feet of sidewalk to edge. I finished the job in four batteries and I was happy. I did not choose the longer lasting 40v model trimmer because my intent was to lessen the weight I had to sling around and I also had a few 18v Ryobi batteries already from previous tools. If you have a small city lot you could probably do it in one battery, but you should get an extra battery to be in the cradle when you need it. The unit is light weight and trims fantastic (of course, not as powerful as my commercial-grade gas trimmer). The head is well built and bump-feeds the string with ease. One tip: When I change string I am going to a lesser gage for possible faster RPMs and less strain on the battery. The unit comes with very thick string and I normally use .80 gage. Bonus: Look at the photo how the trimmer stand up when I change implements! That makes a few less bend-overs of the ol’ back when I change to the edger.

The trimmer works perfectly, the blower doesnt.
Given that one is good and the other is not I am keeping my review in the middle. Summary: do not buy the combo. We love the trimmer, it is light, easy to use and perfect for edge trimming so this is the good part of this. However, the blower is not good. Not strong enough, the “turbo”feature does the job but using that feature makes it last 7 minutes. I do not recommend the blower but I’d say yes to the trimmer. I wish it had come with 2 batteries (one for each). Making it sharable makes it impossible to do one right after the other. I do wonder if I can buy a stronger longer lasting battery for the blower. I will keep mine, money is already spent...but if you are looking for a good blower, please, spend the xtra money on a better quality one. If you are looking for an easy to use, light , battery powered trimmer ...this is it! Buy it on its own!

      Good value for money
This is a good trimmer for money. You get a 15 inch trimmer for $99. Make sure you use a 9.0 battery with this, because this unit draws a lot of power.

        Has yet to “release” string
Will not release string. Changed it out following video instructions and still no release. Now, can not get red “knob” to turn so I can redo the string. Battery it came with ah is low and does not last long. Be careful not to leave battery on charger once charged! Shortens life of battery by half!

          Overheats but great when working
I’ve had this trimmer for just over two years and it’s performed admirably. The high setting eats up some battery but doesn’t seem to tear through things much better than low so mine is nearly always on low. Setup was a breeze, love using One+ battery system (all my cordless tools are Ryobi 18v), and REALLY love not dealing with maintenance on a gas engine. However. Despite cleaning it out after every use, it started over heating this year. First time let it cool down and thought maybe the battery was the issue so swapped and went back to it. Within 10 minutes it was melting the battery. So take it to HD, who happens to be my closest repair facility, and they are balking at the warranty period and want twice as much to repair than it cost to replace. So I’m without a trimmer and have two melted batteries. This is my first negative experience with a Ryobi tool but man this puts a bad taste in my mouth.

            Battery issues
I just bought the Ryobi weed eater today. I don't have a big yard to edge, but the battery only lasted about 10 min. I had to wait 40 min for it to charge back up, and then continue. The equipment is light weight and easy to use. Im just really disappointed in the charge length of the battery. Not sure if I want to deal with the continues charging the battery, or return it for a refund. As you can see in photo, I like the Ryobi brand.

              Very poor battery
wao, I thought that for the type of garden ,I have, I did not need one of gasoline, I buy my ryobi 18v brushless, it has power but the battery is very disappointing, terrible only 10 minutes or less with a full charge, I do not know if the battery is defective , does not let me finish the patio, but it does not last anything, very dissatisfied with the purchase

More effective than my 4 cycle gas powered Ryobi trimmer, but with no gas/oil mess. Goes when you pull the two stage trigger. Stops when you let go. No primer bulb, choke, start... Plenty of battery life for my small city lot on one battery, but it’s mostly dead when I’m done. Two batteries should be plenty to handle a larger lot. If you’re trimming acreage with denser stuff to cut through, or don’t want to mess with battery changes, go for the higher volt version. I already have 18v tools and batteries, so this was an easy addition to the collection.

                  Battery life
Nice trimmer with lots of power, but the battery life is terrible. You will have to have plenty of batteries around to trim up a modest yard. I have lots of cordless ryobi tools and thought this would be great just for the fact that I can use all the same batteries. I guess I’ll have to buy a few more batteries.

                    Disappointed & wasted my money
I live on 2 acres, only trim around trees the riding mower can’t get. On “Low” setting, lasted 10 minutes on a fully charged Batt. Figured maybe it charged poorly, brand new batt 2 hrs later, lasted only 10 minutes. Usually love the brand but feel like I wasted my money

                      Great multi purpose trimmer
I decided to purchase this 18v expand it model due to how many batteries I have in the 18v platform, and none in 40v. The power is great and runtime with provided battery is decent. I have a decent size corner lot and can easily trim the whole thing on a battery charge. Don’t listen to bad reviews about short runtime, you need at least the 4ah battery. I use a 6ah and can edge using the edger attachment and trim my yard on that single battery. Work smarter not harder, use appropriate RPM for the task, trim in low speed and edge in high speed. This trimmer is very versatile and definitely is worth the money if you are invested in Ryobi 18v platform.

Light weight trimmer with plenty of power
For the past 10 years I have only used STIHL lawn equipment for trimming. I was very hesitant on buying this product due mostly to using just STIHL gas powered products and with this being a battery powered trimmer I wasn’t sure how the power would be. I literally bought the product and came home, opened it, and already began using it! The amount of power this product has was amazing I honestly didn’t want to stop trimming the front and back yard. It is very lightweight as well and my girlfriend can even use it with no problems. It easily hits the hard to get areas that I had difficulty getting with my STIHL gas powered trimmer(specifically speaking of hitting those areas at my fence line without leaving any damage to the fence). I fully recommend this to anyone who is using this for homeowner usage, but my only negative comment is the throttle response takes a little bit more time to get your most power out of it. With it having 2 speeds as well makes it even more worth it. I currently run it on a 4 amp battery. Also, I am not a person that ever writes reviews for products, but I was just so impressed with it I felt I needed to let others know. If I would have read a review like mine sooner I would have bought this product sooner than I did.

                          18 V that feels like a 40 V
This is a great tool, I will never buy a gas powered weedeater again,Having a low and high speed option keeps a good if you need to save battery life. But overall solid machine with plenty of power. I used at least 10 times now on my lawn And only one time I had to stop and get another battery. I have a pretty big yard front and back and I edge everything with it as well along the curb and driveway. So it’s pretty amazing that I can do it all on one full charge usually. But most of all it’s amazing how much power these things pack, I remember the old versions of these were never that strong. I’ve seen guys out here in California using them commercially so that speaks for itself.

                            Powerful but Eats Batteries
Summary: This trimmer is very powerful, versatile, and easy to use, but the battery life is terrible. I have a long history with Ryobi tools that led me to purchase this new P20101BTL 18v brushless attachment capable string trimmer. I started with the Ryobi P2080 18v string trimmer/edger which works pretty well and gets great battery life but is rather under powered. Later, I got the much more powerful P2090 18v brushless string trimmer which has been my main trimmer for almost three years but it's not attachment capable. The P2090 inexplicably died last week so I ordered this new P20101BTL which is very similar in appearance except it's attachment capable. I put the new P20101BTL through its paces doing my 1/3 acre yard and my girlfriend's very overgrown 1/4 acre yard and here are my thoughts: First and foremost, this trimmer is extraordinarily powerful, even more than the P2090 was. I can't imagine any average homeowner needing anything more powerful than this. I used it only on the low setting, and most of the time I didn't even need to fully depress the trigger. I never needed to use the high setting even through I was working in slightly damp conditions cutting overgrown grass and tough weeds. However, I swapped the trimmer head out for the Rino-Tuff Pivotrim Hybrid head (highly recommended!) with 0.095" line which probably increased cutting performance, so it's possible that I may have needed to use the high setting if I was using the stock trimmer head with 0.080" line. Your mileage may vary. I did test the stock trimmer head and it works fine but I personally don't like bump-feed heads. The new front grip handle is another improvement because it can be positioned anywhere you want and allows you to quickly switch being trimming and edging by moving your hand to the side of the D-shaped handle. However, the handle is held on with a plastic wingnut which may be a failure point in the future. The trigger switch is an interesting design that is comfortable to use but I found it to be somewhat finicky. Usually it allowed me to finely adjust the throttle but sometimes it acted more like a basic on/off switch. The Expand-It attachment joint is quick and easy to use and forms a solid connection. This model also has a larger and much more effective debris shield compared to the shield on the P2090. Overall, this model is well-balanced, comfortable to use, not too heavy, and very powerful. Here comes the big downside: this thing chews through batteries like it's going out of style. I can't stress this enough, the battery life is terrible. With the P2090 under similar conditions I could trim and edge my 1/3 acre yard with two 6.0 Ah batteries with plenty of charge to spare on the second battery. With this new P20101BTL I burned through two 6.0 Ah and two 4.0 Ah batteries AND STILL WASN'T DONE. The 4.0 Ah batteries lasted a comically short amount of time. I was truly flabbergasted. Before I bought this I didn't believe the other reviews that mentioned poor battery life, but boy do I believe them now. If you have a significant amount of trimming to do, you WILL need multiple 6.0 Ah or 9.0 Ah batteries. I wouldn't even bother with smaller batteries. If you have several big batteries, this thing is fantastic. If you don't, look elsewhere.

For an 18V trimmer, it is very capable. Strong motor, and it cuts through just about anything my gas trimmer did. It is lightweight, quiet, and spins very fast. I find myself no longer grabbing the Gas trimmer and only using the Ryobi, and I am never at a loss for power. It cuts through anything an average homeowner would use it for. The attachment is well built, and the connection seems stable. I gave it a good marking in quality because it looks well made for the price you pay. The only complaint I have is the support handle on the shaft seems weak and flimsy. I am used to a more stiff Stihl handle, so it may just be that way for comfort, but I did not like it. The string is extremely easy to wind, and it comes with a handle that attaches to the string drum, making winding fast and easy. I have yet to need the handle because the button to extend the string is large enough to grab it and twist. It comes with a 4Ah battery that seems to last long enough. I used it for about 45 minutes with a 6Ah, and it drained it to three bars. That is regular use over the hour, not continually running. The gas trimmer I am comparing it to is a Stihl Kombi KM 90R, which is a very capable gas trimmer, and the Ryobi held its own. This is not to say it is just as capable in harsher environments. I only use this for home trimming. The grass is thick, but it is not really challenging, so this review is based on regular homeowner use around the yard.

Let me start by saying I don't really use my weed eater for cutting down weeds. I use my weed eater mostly for edging my lawn and for reaching the areas my lawn mower can't get to. That being said I found this Ryobi 18-volt cordless string trimmer to be very capable for all my needs. Since a lot of my yard tools are from the Ryobi 40-volt line I was thinking this weed eater was going to be under powered since it is only 18-volts. In hindsight I was completely wrong. On the first pull of the trigger you can hear the power this weed eater is producing and you know you're going to be okay. This weed eater has plenty of power for my edging needs and I found it to be very maneuverable and well balanced. The handle is designed in such a way that you can transition from cutting down weeds to edging quite smoothly and comfortably. The overall length of the weed eater is about 6 ft. long which is just about perfect. Since you can put the handle wherever you want and at any angle you want you can pretty much set it up perfectly for any height of person. My wife is on the shorter side and we were able to set it up perfectly for her (now I just have to convince her to use it all the time ;o) This Ryobi string trimmer is part of the "expand it" line of tools and it is "attachment capable" which means you can use the top half of it to attach to multiple tools. You can attach a jet fan blower, 10" pole saw, 8" straight shaft edger, cultivator, sweeper and snow thrower attachment so far. As far as run time goes I'm personally not to worried about it because I have (11) of the Ryobi 18-volt batteries in varying amp hour ratings so I have plenty of spares should I need them. That being said I found the included 4.0 Ah battery to be quite capable. I can edge my whole front lawn with plenty of battery life to spare. I have always found re-stringing any weed eater spool to be a huge pain but this one is not so bad with the provided tool. I was able to go to YouTube and watch another persons video on how to reload the spool and it made understanding how to do it very easy. I would highly recommend doing that for the first time you need to add new line. All in all I'm very impressed with my new Ryobi string trimmer and hope to get years and years of use out of it. I have a whole garage full of different Ryobi power tools and yard tools and I have never had a problem with any of them except for my leaf blower which they were able to fix under warranty. If you are just starting out your yard tool collection or you already have a bunch of them I would definitely give this one a try. You will be happy you did. It's a great string trimmer.

This is a review of the Ryobi Ryobi One+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Attachment Capable Brushless String Trimmer P20101BTL. If you already own the Ryobi 18v batteries, this is a great way to get into the Expand-it line of products, which allows you to quickly attach a number of different tools into one power head. As a stand alone string trimmer, it was the easiest one I have ever assembled. The trimmer has two speeds. One unique thing about this trimmer, is that the handle has an angle to it that makes it easy to use from one side of your body and not the other. The trimmer has enough power, even at the low speed, to trim most everything you will need in your back yard. I did find that I was unable to advance and cut the string at the slow speed. I had to switch to high speed to get the string to cut. If you are looking for a trimmer alone, I find the Ryobi Brushless 18v trimmer P2009A to be a better stand alone trimmer, but you cannot attach the Expand-it products to that unit.

The assembly was not too difficult. It is larger than my older Ryobi model but the weight is about the same. I like the adjustable handle option. This model seems to be much more powerful and has great trimming ability. It is difficult to really test the trimmer this time of the year but it seems to function better than my older Ryobi that I have had for years. I like the 60 second reloading capability, unlike my older model. The pre-wound drop in line is a bit more expensive than my older model. I like that this model has an option with a 2-speed trigger for the tougher areas or thicker grass.

I have to admit that I am a big fan of Ryobi's One+ tools since I bought my first set 16 years ago. I had a gas powered trimmer from Ryobi that my neighbor misplaced so I was looking forward to the cordless version to use at my father's gravesite as well as several other relatives that need tending. It is easy to put together out of the box and it breaks down easily for transport. It simply clicks together and a twist of a knob tightens it.

Ryobi Cordless Attachment Capable Brushless String Trimmer This trimmer was as usual for Ryobi products, very easy to assemble. Seems to be well constructed but it is the rainy season where I live that prevents me from really testing. As stated, it’s easy to put together and is well balanced, a short test indicated that it is very powerful as a string trimmer. Looking forward to trying it with with “Expand-It” attachment for trimming hedges ( Expand-It 15 in attachment for trimming hedges) There are about ten different attachments that can be purchased separately to fully utilize this product. It also comes with a battery and a charger. We are an avid “Ryobi” product household, so this product is highly recommend.

The RYOBI Brand, ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Attachment Capable Brushless String Trimmer, 4.0 Ah Battery and Charger combination is a very capable 0.080-inch string trimmer, featuring dual strings and up to a 15-inch cutting path. This trimmer feels very well balanced in hand, requiring no hearing protection as with a gas trimmer. The Ryobi string supplied with this trimmer is surprisingly tough and wear resistant. Anyone now using a 0.080 in. trimmer will not be disappointed with the power of this Ryobi trimmer. It however does fall short of a 0.095 in. string trimmer, which it is not. While this trimmer has good power and performance, the 4.0-amp hour battery included with the trimmer falls short of my needs on my half acre lot. The lithium battery features four charge indicator lights. I find if each light represents 25-percent of battery charge level, that I get 5 minutes of run time for each 25-percent of battery life. And because I do not like to completely discharge the battery, it lasts roughly 15 minutes at my level of use on the high-speed setting. The lower speed cuts slower for me, offsetting any improved battery life. Recharging is much slower as the battery requires about 30 minutes of charging time to increase by each 25-percent increment. Therefor I have to charge the battery 90 minutes for every 15-minutes of use. For me, that is the down side of this trimmer battery combination. As such, I plan to purchase a 9-amp hour battery for this trimmer and use both. My rating for the trimmer is based on its performance and price for a battery powered trimmer. My rating would have been four out of five if compared to a gasoline trimmer, which it is not.

Very impressed with the speed and power, rivals the best gas powered of similar size. Assembly was a breeze. It is almost 6 feet long when fully assembled. First use was just a test run due to the time of year, so I can't speak to battery life, but for me that isn't really an issue, I have lots of the batteries. The balance is outstanding, better than a smaller Ryobi trimmer I have. You can replace the string from a bulk pack or using prewound drop in spools, although the later is a little pricey in my opinion. I suggest keeping the instructions handy at first as the process to self load is a bit different than most trimmers. Comes with a couple of accessories (see picture), a crank for the quick load feature, a bit of extra string, and a hanger for hanging the trimmer head (only really useful if you have multiple heads for the motor/battery head). To hang the whole unit, as it doesn't really have a convenient way to hang on a hook, but fits very nicely into a u type screw in hanging bracket. And it cut down some high ornamental grasses from last year with ease, so I expect doing grass and edge trimming will be a snap.

I am replacing a 10 year old Ryobi trimmer with this new brushless trimmer. This big boy is well built and heavy duty. I love the 60 second string replacement and bump feed head. This model is attachment capable and Ryobi offers several useful attachments that you can switch out and only buy one powerhead..Mine came with a 4ah battery and the new little wall wart type charger. I will be using either 6ah or 9ah batteries for my use. Overall this seems to be a high quality trimmer and I'm ready to give it a workout.

Replaced a gas trimmer. Much easier to use, no mixing gas & oil, filling tank, etc. Just as powerful for my use. Small complaint - not quite balanced right using a 4 AH battery.
