I purchased the 2 pack battery and charger kit and got this soldering iron for free. Almost all of my tools are Ryobi. This iron added to my collection is great. I put a battery into it and within seconds, it was ready to go. I will be adding more Ryobi tools to my set.

As an engineer at a television station, I do a lot of soldering, mostly at my workbench. But from time to time equipment needs to be installed or repaired in place: in a remote truck, at one of the satellite dishes outdoors, and so on. Dragging out an extension cord for one of our bench irons is inconvenient, so this cordless soldering station is an excellent solution -- especially since we already have several other Ryobi One+ tools. Operationally this resembles the Weller WES51 soldering station on my bench: the temperature is thermostatically controlled over a range from about 400°F to 900°F, and it accepts a number of interchangeable tips. (Ryobi doesn't publicize this, but it turns out that Hakko T18 series tips fit this iron, and they come in several dozen different shapes and sizes.) The base is fairly large: not very tall but rather wide. This turns out to be a good thing, since it isn't easily tipped over. A coiled holder snaps onto the base and works acceptably, though it doesn't hold the iron as positively as my bench unit. A small container on the top holds a sponge for cleaning the tip. The handle is slightly larger than my Weller, but still comfortable. The cord is slightly shorter than I would like and is a bit stiff... but not a serious problem. I've used many different irons in the last 50 years, and the feel of this is in the top 25 percent. The temperature adjustment knob doesn't have markings for temperature between the extremes, but that isn't a terribly big deal. My impression is that the adjustment is fairly linear: using 63/37 lead-tin solder, the performance with the knob at mid-scale is about the same as my Weller set to 650°. Turning it up about 3/4 of the way works just fine for lead-free silver solder. The thermostatic control works quite well, keeping up even with fairly heavy soldering outdoors, which is where many irons fall short. I am impressed. Battery life has not been an issue so far. I'm using it with 3Ah batteries, and for whatever reason I've finished my outdoor jobs before the battery has given out, so I can't really quantify it. Realistically, battery life will depend on the temperature you set, the conditions you're working in (yes, we have to solder things outdoors in the winter!), and the mass of what you're soldering. And even if you do run the battery down, you have the option to plug the station into an ordinary extension cord -- something I haven't had a reason to try. The system automatically shuts down after ten minutes, which helps conserve battery life. Even if it powers off, giving the knob a little twist brings it back up to temperature quickly. The Ryobi P3100 has greatly exceeded my expectations, giving me the performance of a benchtop soldering station anywhere I need to work. Long term durability remains to be seen, but based on my experience so far, I would definitely recommend it.

Product works as advertised. Thought I'd offer some info on replacement tips for the P3100 and P3105 which have the same Ryobi part number 019757001004. After a little research based on the tip measurements, it appears that the HAKKO FX-8801 soldering station uses a very similar wand and replacement tips are the same. See the attached picture. I ordered a selection of tips for a FX-8801 (from Amazon) and they the P3100 and P3105 perfectly!

Purchased this specifically to replace car speakers (with future expected uses) and love it. I was working far from any outlets so this was perfect. Has the option to be plugged in when you have the ability but mobility was one of the key reasons I got it. It heats up quickly and used an older Ryobi battery and was able to desolder the old speakers and solder all 4 new speakers before the battery was spent. Would highly recommend to anyone on the fence about this. Feels solid. It'll do what you need it to do, even if you don't have an outlet nearby.

I’m using this for soldering rail on a model railroad. Not the same purpose everyone will use it for I’m sure, but it’s one where temperature control AND portability are both important. This has been very useful for me, it avoids having to string an extension cord wherever I’m working. The iron heats up fairly quickly, and the temperature stability seems good. The tips are easy to switch. A couple of features I’d like to see - one, a hook or keyhole slot under the front of the iron to make it easy to hang for storage or for use (has to hang with the forward edge facing upward, so that the iron holder is still facing the proper direction). Two, something other than the wet sponge for tip cleaning… a captive compartment for metal wool would be better, something that works either flat or hanging as in #1 above. Three, a display (or at least tick marks) showing the approximate tip temperature, rather than just 400 at one end and 900 at the other.

I love the idea of a portable soldering station. I have a huge, very heavy digital soldering/de-soldering rework station thats bolted down to my workbench. Going from a digital temp control to a knob was alot easier then I though. Just adjust temp while working its easy. The only thing I don't like is the soldering iron holder wish it held it more securely. But every soldering station I've owned I never liked any of the iron holders. I do love this soldering station though. Battery last a long time. And it accepts all basic soldering tips so the hundreds I already have work with this. That's a huge plus.

I've had this for a couple months now. I wouldn't purchase this again. It's portable because of the battery but it's large and bulky. Handle is huge, not ideal for any kind of precise work. In spite of its large size, it's still only a 40 watt soldering iron. I feel like they could have had all the same functionality at a much smaller size. The iron also turns off without warning - you will be chugging along and suddenly wondering why you aren't melting any solder. I understand the auto-shut off is there for a reason but some sort of audio que would be nice, easy to lose track of time when you're focused on a project and it's annoying to always have to look back at the station for a green light. Another big con is that you don't know exactly what temperature you are at. The temperature for only the min and max of 400 and 900F is labeled. You can kind of guestimate the temp but it's unnecessary mental overhead. That's 204C and 482C. If reference documents use metric, then even guestimating the position for the desired temp is even more difficult. Also, I think at this price, it should have come with a short extension cable. I only have a 25 foot extension cable, looks silly and is messy. Find myself using the battery even when I have an outlet nearby.

Works great, would highly recommended. I use it as my main soldering iron, heats up fast. It’s a little bit bigger foot print than a standard soldering iron and the cord is not as flexible as a standard soldering iron station but these are only minor details. I have not tried plugging it into normal power yet, I have only used batteries. It is nice that you can use both power sources. The temp control is also a nice feature.

This was just the tool I required it allows me to take it to the worksite and use it with it's own power or use it on the workbench with AC power and save the batteries. Great investment and replaces a number of tools and extension cords.
