Game Changer!
It's late winter here in New England and everyone is dreaming of spring. However, no one is excited for the yard work. Normally, I would have to bring out the rakes, gloves, wheelbarrow and bags to waste a day cleaning up dead grass and leftover leaves from a typical cold winter. I wanted to find a simple solution without having to spend a fortune. This Ryobi dethatcher is the perfect solution. Firstly, set up out of the box was a breeze. Really just had to attach the handle. The kit comes complete with easy to understand directions, 2 batteries (you need both to operate the tool) fast charger ,an aeration spool and Allen wrench to switch between dethatcher and aerator. Once assembled, it's a simple lever to adjust to height and pop on the bag and your good to go. Its very lightweight so you won't be fighting so beastly machine. I would say about the only negative is you probably wouldn't want tackle any size property over half an acre or with huge hills, it's not self propelled.

Good For Personal Use
So, for years I've always considered getting a thatcher being that I always do all my own lawn care. Every other year I've always borrowed one off of a friend or rented one. I recently came across the RYOBI 18-Volt Cordless Dethatcher online. Right away I noticed the picture that HD illustrated wasn't a thatcher, so I looked up the model on Ryobi's website, then ordered it on the HD website. With that said, upon taking it out of the box, the thatcher was easily put together, It runs on two batteries which are easily charged with the included charger. It comes with two attachments, a thatcher and aerator attachment which are easily interchangeable. Where I am located, it's still pretty early to thatch, but took it outside to test it out and needless to say I was very impressed. The power behind it was incredible and it easily picked up all the dead thatch. The only thing I would add as a negative is, the whole exterior is entirely made of plastic, so in my opinion, I definitely wouldn't use it for anything other than personal use. Also, the bag that attaches to the thatcher is kind of on the small side, so you're going to have to stop it a lot to empty it. Once it gets warm, I'll test it out without the bag, then maybe pick up the thatch with my mower like I use to do with the ones I either borrowed or rented. Either way, I'm definitely looking forward to using it.

A great addition to team ryobi!
Paired with my ryobi lawn mower, I am excited to deploy this tool to use on my lawn with hopes to dethatch and aerate the lawn properly as it has never been before. As a new property owner, I am thrilled to be able to perform a property maintenance task that doesn’t break the bank and sees an immediate return in terms of a visually appealing lawn. For the purpose of this review, I drove this down south when visiting a buddy to deploy on his lawn. Assembly was very intuitive and we were able to put it to the test within minutes - essentially slapping together some tubes and bolts as depicted in the pictures. The detthatcher attachment comes installed and aerator provided separately in a box for simple swap install. Pros, love the dual battery capacity for long run time and shared use with my other tools. Excellent safety precautions with the run key and 2-step start up, as a new parent this appeases me as a toddler loves to touch every thing. Easy height adjustment for varying thickness and terrain. I suggest starting high and working down from there when doing this for the first time like I was. I traveled moving forward only in a pattern from one end of the property to the other. I tested it with and without the bag. It was easy to empty the bag as it filled up quickly, and was a bit better than without the bag as would require running around with a rake to pick up the bundles of fluff. This was a nice pro for conserving my back. The only con I encountered were the clips during install, as it was a bear to run the cable through the clips to secure it - otherwise no major complaints! I am super excited to see the progress on my neglected lawn from the previous property owner. I highly recommend this for anyone trying to tackle meaningful tasks around their property and want to see the instant ROI.

Excellent Combo Kit!
Ryobi develops a new and improved dethatcher & aerator combo kit. The model comes with 2 4.0 18v batteries and a charger which comes in handy. What I love best is that this model comes with a basket to catch your thatch as you walk along. This is definitely a game changer in eliminating added pass or rake time when collecting the debris. Another plus is that you can adjust the height of the dethatching/aerating height with 4 settings. The lever is located in the upper side by the wheel. As a safety feature, the device will deactivate if you let go of the lever. On the opposite end, it will not activate until that lever is gripped and the button to activate it is pushed. To switch from dethatching and aerating you need to switch cylinders. This is easily accomplished with an Allen Wrench which is provided as well. It took me a minute or two to switch them out. To add, the weight of the machine makes it easy to push and store as well. The best part is that its 18v powered. No longer do I have to do this task with a chorded dethatcher that I currently own and cant wait to get rid of. Overall, when operate the machine this Spring its going to make my life very easy when doing it. Ryobi comes through with another winner to help keep my yard looking sharp. Ryobi gets my "Adda-Boy" Award for this one!

Ryobi One + HP High Performance Dethatcher and Aerator 18V Brushless engine
The Ryobi One + High-performance Dethatcher and Areator comes with 2 18V batteries, blades for Dethatching, and another for Areating. Very simple to change out and a battery charger, Assembly is also quite simple with no tools required. It comes with an allen wrench to change out the different blades for lack of a better word. It is only one bracket to remove to pop out one and put the other in. It has 4 settings for height adjustment and I found that the 3 settings worked very well for the dethatch attachment any lower and you would be pulling up the soil as well. The stainless steel tines really do a great job and even on the semi-frozen ground it pulled up all the thatch and left a nice clean grass bed. It tends to use power from one battery first then if that goes out moves to the second battery. But I did my front and side yards with the power from just one 18V battery, And it moves fast but needs to be emptied often. The best part is a single handle for height adjustment. Housing and wheels are all plastic and that is the only downside, Not sure how long that will last so use care.

EXCELLENT ALTERNATIVE TO GAS-POWERED EQUIPMENT; INADEQUATE INSTRUCTIONS
The RYOBI 18-Volt Cordless Dethatcher is a useful tool for anyone who maintains a quality lawn. Although not emphasized in the title, it is also an aerator which increases its usefulness significantly. Since renting a gas-powered tool to perform similar functions can be expensive and create logistical problems, this tool should be a welcome, easy-to-use, cost-effective alternative. It comes with two 18V 4.0 Ah batteries which must both be used to operate the tool. The 30 minute battery charger took 70 minutes to charge each of the batteries. Maybe charger inflation. RYOBI continues to improve its chargers. This is the third different 18V charger that I have seen in the past year. Unfortunately it is the largest of the three and its cord comes out the top unlike my chargers of other brands which makes this charger awkward to mount on the wall in my workshop. The instructions are poorly written. It has extensive warnings but cryptic details on assembly. The instructions for changing from the dethatcher to the aerator are relegated to the maintenance section. Since the dead of winter is not the best time to use this equipment on our lawn, I am looking forward to using it in the fall when parts of our lawn may need to be rejuvenated. In the past I have used a long-handled claw to dethatch and the spike shoe attachments for aerating (not too cool). The unit is lightweight, easy to start, and easy to push. It uses a red key that must be inserted for it to start. See the photo. It is easy to adjust the height of the wheels. Even at height setting zero, the tines still seemed to touch the surface so the unit should be tilted back some so that only the rear wheels are engaged when moving it. The debris catcher is easy to install and should make the cleanup easy (unless it needs to be emptied often). The two 4.0 Ah 18 V batteries should be able to provide sufficient power. The instructions need to say more about how to secure the handles after they are folded for storage In trying to secure the handles after folding, it seems that the threads on two of the four plastic knobs were stripped. The current folding system does not save much storage space so this is an area that could be improved. My concerns are that the unit seems fragile since it is made mostly of plastic and that the aerator may damage the lawn. The unit is made in China and comes with a 3-year limited warranty.

Conveniently cordless
The cordless Ryobi dethatcher/aerator is very convenient to use due to its being cordless. Better yet, the clean-up is a breeze since it collects the dead grass in a bag. For me, it replaced a corded dethatcher from another brand that I ended up not using since it used an extension cord and had no bag. Needing to clean up the mess was enough to make me not want to do it and just keep the lawn as is. I often mulch when I mow, and many areas of the yard were in great need of some dethatching. I tested this in a small area since dethatching should be done during growth season (which it is not currently), but it seems to be working really well collecting the dead grass and keeping the roots intact without hurting it much. I used it at the tallest (0) setting on St Augustine grass and it seems to be working well at that setting. I tried the aerator reel as well, but it seemed to be cutting the roots of the grass shoots, so probably the aerator function is not the best for St Augustine grass due to its parallel shoots underneath, but may work well with bermuda or other grasses. It comes with 2 4.0ah batteries and a quick charger. The charger filled an empty battery in about an hour, so it was quite quick. It uses 2 batteries at once and after some use it still showed full, so the brushless engine did not drain a lot of power while it seemed to be working hard. It is not loud, and does not make a lot of dust, but still good to use safety glasses and a mask. It quickly filled the bag with dead grass after using a little and I was able to see the soil underneath. It left a clean trail behind. The handles fold and it doesn’t take a lot of space when in storage. Overall, the cordless and bag function of this dethatcher helped me actually get on this task and stop procrastinating on it since dealing with the cord and using the rake to clean up after would take me hours while this one get the job done in half the time with half the effort and/or pain.

Excellent Cordless Dethatcher including Aerator blade
Excellent Cordless Dethatcher including Aerator blade that is easy to swap between the two. Unit is height adjustable and comes with bagger attachment. I found the bagger not very functional as I could never get the bagger more than a fourth full at a time. Unit with the two batteries provided and in use by the unit was powerful enough for me to do my front and back yard with only half of the batteries charge. Unit moves easily thru the yard and does a good job of dethatching. With it's compact design it can be broken down or hung in the shed out of the way when it isn't needed. Unit comes assembled except for the three pieces for the handle that takes only 5-10 minutes to assemble and be ready to use!

RYOBI 18-Volt Cordless Dethatcher / Scarifier Works Great easy to use
This Model P2704 Ryobi 18volt one + brushless dethatcher works great I had a large area of spongy lawn and it turned out to be just a buildup of old grass clippings and after using this everything is a ok again. I do trail maintenance and have used this on some mossy spots and with the four different Height adjustments and a 14-inch clearing width it turned out great. The 16 stainless steel scarifying blades do a good job to allow moisture, water. Seeds, air and nutrients into the soil. In the spring if you have burnt spots left from pets just use this and some seed to restart your lawn. Easy to change the tine cylinder or dethatcher with the provided 5mm wrench or to remove or install the debris catcher without any tools required. Make sure you read the operators manual and follow the safety rules Two 18-volt batteries are required for operation this comes with a battery charger and two batteries. Both the batteries and charger have charge indicator lights to keep you informed this is just one of the many.18 volt one plus Ryobi products that work. Three-year warranty and a brushless motor gives you a lot of run time. Get this at Home Depot it works for me

This Aerator is basically good at being basic. The batteries don’t last that long on a full charge. It did what it was designed to do that’s all.
