Q:Can you use this to drill holes like a normal drill or would it be better to just get a normal drill?

Answer This Question
A: Yes you certainly can use this tool (any impact driver, as far as I know) as a drill. I do it all the time and it is so much better than a drill at driving screws that you will never go back to a regular drill.

Q:On my new PBLID02 Impact Driver, the collet looks bent when I install any bits into it. Like when you insert a drill bit crooked into a drill. The bit is tight in the collet but wobbles and appears out of round. Is this normal or is the collet defective?

They did it again
Ryobi is a company that I trust. We have been purchasing and expanding our tools with Ryobi products and it is really nice to see that much green in our tool area. This brushless impact drive has a ton of power and I'm using a 18V with 3.0ah. The tool itself is light weight, so depending on your battery, thats how heavy it is going to get. I'm a DIY, so the modes are lost on me. I'll have to research it. But all I know is that I wanted a screw to go into a tree trunk to hang a bug zapper, and it went in so easily!
This is not the Ryobi of the old days. This thing has serious power.
You will not regret getting this tool.

A decent tool for the price but with a couple of issues.
BACKGROUND: I have a few ¼ in. impact drivers, but none from Ryobi, so the chance to try out their PBLID02B brushless model was too good to pass up.
FIT AND FINISH: We own a Ryobi cordless mower and weed eater and this tool is comparable in quality.
FEATURES: From the Home Depot page, with my comments as appropriate.
• Brushless motor provides up to 25% faster driving, more runtime, power, and longer motor life
o Brushless is now a common feature with other manufacturers as well.
• Produces a powerful 2,200 in./lbs. of torque
o Comparable to other tools in this family and class.
• Optimized impacting mechanism delivers up to 4,000 IPM
• 3 speeds and Assist Mode offer ultimate control in a variety of applications when driving a variety of fasteners from large lag screws to small sheet metal screws (see video)
o This speed switch appears to be electronic. I assume it controls the trigger to motor voltage through the brushless controller.
o The assist mode is handy as it controls rpms in both directions when starting to install or remove fasteners.
• Compatible with LITHIUM+ HP batteries for even better performance
o High performance LI batteries are now common for these types of tools.
• Die cast gear case for maximum durability
o Metal is always better!
• One-handed bit release for quick bit changes
o There were a few things I didn’t like about this chuck (see video.)
I could not always push a driver bit in without pulling the latch collar. Some of my other drivers also balk at certain driver bits, particularly the double-ended bits.
Sometimes the collar would not lock the bit in place, at other times when ejecting a bit, the lock collar would remain in the unlocked position. In both cases I had to use two hands. There are times when you can’t easily get both hands to the tool. This is a major issue for me with this driver.
Also, there is a spring assist that pops driver bits out of the collet. The spring is strong enough to launch a short driver bit about 4 inches out of the collet. A couple of times they popped out of the collet and landed in the grass…not good when you are working one-handed on a ladder. I could live without that feature.
• On-board LED worklight for increased workspace visibility
o A good illumination design. I like the lights surrounding the output shaft; it prevents shadow zones.
• Perfect for professional and DIY jobs
o This tool didn’t feel as heavy duty as my impact drivers from other manufactures. I think it’s ok for DIY projects, but I don’t think I’d consider it suitable for professional use.
• Part of the RYOBI 18V ONE+ System of over 225 Cordless Tools that all work on the same battery platform
• 3-year manufacturer's warranty
• Includes: (1) PBLID02B 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 4-Mode 1/4 in. Impact Driver and operator's manual
• Battery and charger sold separately
SUMMARY: If you already have Ryobi tools this is probably a good move for an impact driver. If you don’t own other cordless tools there are probably suitable equivalents from those manufacturers.
PROS: Compatible with all Ryiobi ONE 18V batteries. Good lighting.
CONS: Quick release collet has issues. Bits eject from collet under spring assist.
RYOBI nocked this one out of the park! I love the drill. I used it to replace a few boards on my deck and to re-drill some new screws down that had popped up. The drill was easy to use and hold. The drill bit went in and out with little effort. Holding the drill felt real good. It is light weight and the grip is perfect for my hand. Adjusting the power is a nice addition as well. It helped out with a couple of stubborn wood screws. The LED light is a perfect addition as well. Even though I did this in the day, that light will come in real handy. Overall, the drill worked above and beyond. RYOBI has and always will be a go to for tools. I would RECOMMEND to anyone with no hesitation.
RYOBI ONE+ HP 18V Brushless Cordless 1/4 in. 4-Mode Impact Driver (Tool Only)
My Review for RYOBI ONE+ HP 18V Brushless Cordless 1/4 in. 4-Mode Impact Driver (Tool Only) I have a few of the older model Ryobi tools, and these new HP versions are really a lot better. This tool has lots of torque and is super easy to hold. I didn't think I was going to use the Assist Mode, but it is really nice for removing screws. It gives six quick pulses to drive or remove a screw, and then it speeds up. Keeps you from stripping out your screw head. I also really like how the lamp stays on for a few seconds after letting go of the trigger.
Ryobi Has Made a Great Step Forward to PRO's and DIYers
RYOBI 18 V Brushless 4-Mode Impact Driver
For most trades people Ryobi has been ONLY a homeowner’s DIY tool platform. This Ryobi 18 v 4-Mode Impact Driver should change that perception. You now have a Ryobi tool that meets all of the applications that the other TTI brands have been holding as their own. The Low, Medium, High Speeds and the Assist Modes have changed the game for Ryobi. Low Speed (1) Mode having 0-850 RPM, Medium Speed (2) Mode supplies 0-2,000 RPM, High Speed (3) Mode can deliver 0-2,900 RPM and finally the Assist (A) Mode giving 0-2,900 RPM with faster impacts going in and a full 6 impacts when you are removing stubborn fasteners before continually driving the fastener out. All of those actions are occurring while you have full control driving in or out with the variable speed control trigger adjusting the speed in both directions with your finger-controlled trigger. You only need be aware that continued slow speed operation will put considerable strain on the brushless motor leading to a possible overheating condition. This is to be expected with any motor subjected to intense loading conditions. Another feature that previously was available only to the other more professional tools coming out of the ITT product lineup, was the press to install feature of the retaining collet. Ryobi has now grown up to get the speed modes and now the press to install bit collet. When removing those bits Ryobi now ejects the bits with spring pressure behind them. All in all, Ryobi has now arrived to that crossover position, both the Pros and DIY communities, will be seen using the same tool on the job. Ryobi has now started filling their lineup with tools that fit the demands of the Pros and affordable to the weekend warrior’s budget.
First off, I highly recommend everyone get an impact driver in addition to a drill. They work so much better driving screws than a standard drill. Much more torque and less frequent stripping of screws. And change bits out is so much easier with the slip chuck rather than those on a drill.
I have the older version of this tool and its got a ton of use over the years. I wanted to upgrade and see what the difference was with the new ones. Overall, its the same great Ryobi product with the addition of Assist Mode which regulates power to the bit to even further decrease the likelihood of stripping out a screw. When you put it up to Level 3, watch out, it has sooo much power and will drive a screw/lag bolt through just about anything in no time. The light is super bright and like the placement on the bottom by the battery as it isn't blocked by the machine and illuminates what you are working on.
Now for my once complaint. I get the bonus of having the selection button on the base but why did Ryobi have to get rid of the magnetic screw storage. This is such a great feature on the older model and came in so handy. Bring it back!
Improving on an already good tool -- smaller, lighter, more powerful, more features.
I already have an older Ryobi impact driver (P234G), but the PBLID02B is a significant improvement. It’s shorter (see pics), which can be critical when driving long screws between close-spaced floor joists or studs. It’s fractionally lighter which reduces fatigue when you’re driving hundreds of screws or working overhead. It’s more powerful, though I don’t remember the older model ever being too “weak”. It has an LED light which comes on automatically when you touch the trigger, and stays on a few seconds after you finish.
And it has a “mode selector” -- three speeds plus an “Assist” mode. The first three modes limit the maximum RPMs to 850, 2000, and 2900 (respectively). The variable speed trigger works in all modes, so you can theoretically keep the speed low even in mode 3, but mode 1 makes it easier NOT to drive screws too deep in soft materials like cedar pickets or drywall.
Assist mode is interesting. When driving, it starts slowly, which helps prevent the bit from stripping the screw head. In reverse, it “pulses” 6 times before spinning normally. This should help break free a screw that’s in very tight. The reverse seemed more helpful to me. See video for a brief demo.
As noted in the product description, this is a “bare tool” meaning neither a battery or charger is included. A belt clip (SKU 1005460230) and bit holder (SKU 1005460235) are also extra. Home Depot offers them separately (see SKUs).
Ryobi ONE+ HP 18V Brushless Cordless 1/4 in. 4-Mode Impact Driver (Tool Only)
Highly recommended.
I have a larger driller driver and it's heavy. I wanted a smaller one and got this. Fits my small lady hands perfectly. I like the grip. I have several one+ items so the batteries I have work on on this too. This has a nifty light that automatically comes on when you start to drill. The mode button is right on the front and lights up so you can tell which mode you are in really easily. Didn't need the manual to figure out how to insert the bits but it is a pull out mechanism that was easy to maneuver. It's lightweight so doesn't tire my old arms out as easily.

Ryobi PBLID02 4-Mode Impact Driver gets an, "A" for "Assist Mode". This is new, at least to me. Impact drivers with selectable speed ranges are a significant improvement over those without that feature. This impact driver has 3 speed ranges which Ryobi calls, "Modes". The game changer is that 4th mode. Just squeezing the trigger briefly in the A-mode seems to be similar to Mode 1 with a speed of around 800 RPM. That would be an incorrect assumption as that is only how the brushless motor speed assists with starting that screw. With full trigger pull the motor will then, on its own, speed up to 2,900 RPM to finish the drive. It has another trick up its sleeve when removing fasteners in the reverse setting. It will pulse six times before it speeds up to remove the fastener. Other nice features include the one-handed bit insertion collet; the bright LED light, and the rubber bumpers on the sides and rear. Compared to earlier models, the grip seems to have been improved for better control and comfort.
