What an awesome surprise that this little chainsaw worked like a big chainsaw. It tackled the entire job - four trees with significant and large limbs broken off in a winter ice storm - with ease and consistency. Like any chainsaw, keep an eye on the bar oil and chain tension. But when you do need to tighten the chain, on onboard tool helps you tighten it up lickety split! battery life is phenomenal! I have other Ryobi 18V tools, so we had spare batteries on hand and did need to swap them out mid way through the job. I'm very happy I bought this chainsaw! You should buy one too!

So, I decided to cut up the tree myself but needed a chainsaw. I'm a Ryobi tool customer so I decide to purchase their 12" Whisper series chainsaw. Wow! what a workhorse I was able to quietly cut down the entire tree without disturbing my neighbors. I'd absolutely recommend this product.

Sometimes it's years before needing a chainsaw to cut up a fallen tree. Even with proper draining, the 2 strokes were always hard to get going again. This time, it wouldn't start at all. I have lots of ONE+ batteries and figured this thing would burn thru 'em quick, so I'd give this one a try. Won't bother this saw to sit for years on a shelf. Holy cow what a surprise! I got about 40 minutes of continuous cutting on the 6A battery that came with it. Only needed 2 more from the bucket I brought.

Bought this primarily to cut up a silver birch that fell on our property and because I already have a large collection of Ryobi One+ tools and batteries. Buying the bundle with included 6Ah HP battery and charger is a no-brainer, since it was only $20 more. When used with an HP battery, this is a surprisingly good little machine. I've used it on the aforementioned silver birch which was 13.5" at the base as well as some honey locust limbs up to about 8" thick. Obviously the trunk of the birch had to be cut in two passes, but it handled this easily, otherwise. This was all wood on the ground. I've not yet used it for cutting limbs off of trees or felling any trees. It's fairly light and easy to use with a responsive trigger, so I can't imagine it having any problem with such a task. I'm not a tree felling guy - at least I don't have experience doing so, so I won't comment on suitability but with it's 12" bar and 11.25" depth of cut, I can't see it being useful for such work except for fairly small trees. It would not have been sufficient for that birch had it not already been on the ground. You do have to use an HP battery. I have several standard 4Ah Li-ion batteries and when used with those, it would frequently trigger the overload and the battery would have to be removed and re-inserted to start working again. With the included 6Ah HP battery and a 9Ah HP battery I already owned, it works flawlessly and never cut out on me, even in hard material like that aforementioned honey locust. The silver birch was fairly effortless to cut up with this saw. I cut up the entire tree as shown in the photo using the included 6Ah battery from fully charged. It was down to 1 bar at the end, but was still cutting about as well as when I started the job. This was about 1 hour of cutting on and off as I cleared material out of the way. It does seem to have trouble clearing the chips and the chip exhaust port would frequently fill up - at least with the birch. I didn't notice this with the honey locust. It may be due to moisture content, as the honey locust limbs have been down for a month or two, whereas the birch fell less than a week ago. This didn't really affect the cut, but did mean the chips started flying forwards off the top of the chain since they could no longer exit out of the port as designed. Note that the chain is a 1/4" pitch, which could be harder to find if/when you need to replace it - something to consider. Chain tensioning requires a flat screwdriver and removing/replacing the bar/chain required a 1/2" wrench. There is a compatible wrench included and carried on the saw, but a tool-less system like some of the other Ryobi saws would have been better. Those are the only real criticisms, though. For a home/occasional user, it's a pleasure to work with otherwise and if you're already invested in the One+ system it's a good addition to your tools and capabilities.

My experience with a Ryobi battery operated chain saw goes back to 2004, where it was part of a tool bundle, and merely a toy. It was useless, left behind when we moved. Fast forward to today, and I didn't know what to expect. This is now a totally different TOOL, worthy of respect and caution. The 5" dead tree you see, was a stump in mere seconds! It's powerful, and can do some severe damage quickly. The instructions call for CHAIN AND BAR oil before using the tool, which was a little difficult to find, but the instructions insisted on it. Ignore the instructions at your own risk - this is a powerful tool!

I wanted this chainsaw because I expected it to last longer, be lighter and use less battery power than the average chainsaw. Because of the brushless motor it will use less energy and be less prone to wear, so no replacing brushes as they wear down. Ryobi made this saw with a 12 inch bar to give you a little more cutting surface than the 10” bar on most battery operated chainsaws. I had never heard of a low kickback chain but I was happy to see it was part of this saw. The chain/bar oil reservoir is large enough to hold a good amount of oil and it has a translucent window so you don’t have to remove the cap to check the oil level. The bar adjustment tool is stored in the handle so it’s readily available. As a test I cut down a sickly redbud tree that had 3 base trunks. It took about 15 minutes to cut it down and section it into 4 foot pieces. That’s as fast as one of my gas chain saws and it was a whole lot quieter!

I absolutely love my new RYOBI ONE+ HP 18V Brushless 12 in. Electric Cordless Chainsaw with 6.0 Ah Battery and Charger! With the 6Ah battery, it is extremely powerful, not to mention quiet when compared with a gas equivalent. Now, when I want to cut something, the whole neighborhood won’t hear me! The saw is rated to cut up to 10-inch trees, but since I was putting it through its paces, I thought I’d try it on a dead 15-inch pine that had fallen and was blocking one of my trails. It worked flawlessly! What comes in the box is saw and the plastic chain guard that slides over the bar. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t include a small bottle of chain lube and a chain tightening tool, which have been included with the saws I have purchased in the past, so, when you buy your saw, you still have more shopping to do! All in all, it’s a great saw at a great price!

The Ryobi ONE+ HP 18V Brushless 12 in. Electric Cordless Chainsaw and battery combo package is very useful for suburban and rural homeowners. The points that I like about the unit are: 1. Battery powdered and quiet. Really quiet! No screeching loud two cycle engines for doing small cleanup jobs (which is exactly what this unit is meant to be used for in my opinion). 2. Swappable batteries with other Ryobi tools. Check to make sure this is a compatible model with what you have today and can save $20 purchasing only the tool. But then again, an extra battery for $20 is a no brainer. 3. The battery in the mid-section of the tool gives it a good balance and ease of use. 4. Ryobi quality is great. This is the third Ryobi battery powdered outdoor tool I own (one is a lawn mower) and my experience has been the quality is very good. The lawn mower had been shipped with defective batteries and Ryobi immediately replaced the batteries under warranty. Their customer service is very good. 5. The chainsaw just works, and you don’t use it often so compared to 2 cycle chainsaws that gum up the carb while sitting for long periods of time, this unit just fires up with its battery power. I used to have to play with the 2 cycle to get it running that the job was sometimes easier to do with a bow saw. 6. Do not forget to purchase chain oil as this wisely ships without it. Overall if you need a saw for limited home and lawn use for cutting back overgrown bushes, downed tree limbs, etc., this is a perfect model for you. I cannot speak to how it would do if you used it as chainsaw for cutting firewood from large trees. The blade size kind of limits that. Again, I think it is perfect for the suburban or rural home for small jobs.
