Questions & Answers

Do you drill the bit into the stripped screw clockwise then change direction on the drill and remove by drilling counterclockwise?
ByNov 4, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hello, Keith - Start by drilling a small pilot hole into the center of the stripped screw using a standard drill bit. This step is done clockwise with your drill in forward mode. Then, tap in the correct size extractor into the pilot hole. Lastly, use a wrench or possibly needle-nose pliers (preferably with a locking mechanism) to remove the screw or bolt. We hope this helps! If you need further support, then feel free to ask another question. First picture is a lie. Ryobi has been told this in other reviews for more than a year and not fixed the picture showing false specifications.

Budget friendly option and good quality
Bought this based on another review of someone in the same situation as me. The spark plug threads got stuck inside the head of my motorcycle and saved me about $3k for a new head and a rebuild. Used the second largest bit for my plug (CR8E)

                      Terrible
The size guide on the website is inaccurate to the real product. The online guide asks for a 9/64 bit to be used with the smallest extractor, but it actually requires a 7/64 bit. Said bit also snapped when I first tried to use it, so I have a larger problem on my hands now. The bit is embedded in the screw I was trying to extract, and I'm not sure if my bits are strong enough to drill through it. Do not buy this product.

For just $11–$12, I was able to remove a stuck adapter from a harmonic balancer installation kit. The extractor worked perfectly and saved me a lot of money. A few firm taps to get a better grip of the adapter and some careful easing, and the adapter came right out.

                          False advertisement
This kit advertised the #1 extractor at 5/64 on the photo. I got the kit and it’s 7/64. See attached photo

They work if you know what you’re doing
I was in a pinch doing a brake job on my car and the caliper slide pin sheered off and was seized inside the caliper bracket there’s no way this would’ve came out just by simply using this Ryobi extractor if I didn’t heat it up insanely hot with a torch first. Then I got the broken pin out of the bracket using the Ryobi extractor and I used a heavy duty Irwin tap handle which still required a LOT of elbow grease to work the pin out. This $20 kit saved me hundreds o bucks in car parts!

Follow the instructions and you cannot go wrong. And don't lose hope. The threads on the largest extractor I used stripped off. But it worked even after that!

                                Successful Spark Plug Extraction
Snapped the threads off a new spark plug while torquing it to spec - made the mistake of trying to get by without anti-seize compound. Used the largest of the 5 bits within the kit. The chuck on my DeWalt drill was too small for this bit; the smaller 4 bits fit the drill - be aware of this if you have the screw/threads really stuck and need the drill's torque. In my case I just used vice grips to back the bit and threads out a half turn at a time. Saved me from a headache.

I was doing a water pump job on my Miata, and one second later... the bolt was overtoqued and stuck in my block. YIKES! Thankfully I've been keeping this in my toolbox for this very reason. I knew this day would come, and extremely thankful these Ryobi extractors bailed my behind out. SWEET!

Had to unscrew brass out of aluminum. So... Following the instructions, drilled 7/64 hole, used a bit #1 and tried to unscrew it. 1. The squared end became semi circle. 2. The bit eventually snapped. 3. Aluminum block wins them all
