Questions & Answers

My GD201 came wth a little box that plugs into a power outlet called a "Relay Hub". What is it for?

There is no mention of it in the manual, and I can't find any reference to it online. Is it for extending wifi signal, or perhaps signals for remotes or keypads?

Does this opener come with a hard-wired wall switch for the interior garage wall?
Asked by: KeithG
I learned today that there is an antenna inside of the receiver that plugs into the headunit. Unscrew 2 Phillips screws and you'll see a tightly coiled wire. That is the antenna. Gently, uncoil and stretch out the wire. There is no notch or hole so either make one in the casing or semi-close the housing without cutting the wire. The wire antenna should stretch a good 6-7 inches. I have yet to test the reliability of this fix but according to the rep, it helps immensely with those of you having issues with the wireless indoor pad.

I am a huge fan of Ryobi and owner of lots of Ryobi products and bought this garage door opener as soon as it came out (even though my existing garage door opener worked fine), primarily because it is the ONLY garage door you can program to open a little bit ("kitty door"), but also because of all the accessories. Unfortunately, I don't think this is of good enough quality for the rigors of daily garage door use. Ours stopped working in less than a year. They replaced it, but what a pain. Then the app stopped working with the kitty door feature. They replaced it again, promising the newer model would work with the kitty door feature, but it never did. Now I am stuck with a garage door that doesn't work with the kitty door feature which is the primary reason I bought it, and the remotes don't work reliably either, I have to open the car window and push repeatedly to get it to work, even with a fresh battery.

It is solidly built, very quiet and seems like a quality product. The wireless features are somewhat finicky, and the integration not as easy as it should be. The vehicle remotes work perfectly, and the unit is able to be connected to cars that support the Homelink functionality. The wireless internal keypad does not have good key feedback when the button is pressed, and does not communicate to the main unit consistently. The external keypad also has a very soft touch feedback, but seems to be more consistent than the internal one. The door sensor and relay once setup seem to work well. The app could use some improvement, but overall does what it should. I did have to improve the wireless signal in my garage for it to consistently stay online, although that does not interfere with the garage door opener basic functions. Not sure if I would buy it again, but it is surely the direction all garage doors will soon be going.

The first hurdle was getting to page 18 of the installation manual and the print changed to French. In searching for other instructions in the box I luckily stumbled across a 1 page installation addendum for an additional step. Lots of confidence on quality control lost at this point. I ran into several other installation direction errors and frustrations with Ryobi. Ultimately got the opener installed but now can't get the Wifi connected, its stuck on "Negotiating connection with router". What a pain. The other major problem is the interior door key pad works intermittently. I tried hardwiring it with my existing wires but it failed to operate the door. Pretty pathetic for something right out of the box. The one good note is that it is quiet, minus the beeping when opening & closing. I love the idea and all the bells and whistles, but do yourself a favor and wait until a better brand makes a competitive product that actually works like it should.

Installation of the mechanical unit is straightforward. Connection of the wireless controls goes OK, although the instructions for the interior control has the wiring reversed. The wireless control has a random delay to it, anywhere from .5s to 5 seconds. The door position sensors seem to connect to the hub, but after 3 hours I've had no success making it far enough in the app setup process to successfully link the hub to the openers. I was able to finally connect one opener to the app and it usually works. The second opener shows up in the app but some of the controls are grayed out and it doesn't respond. Both doors show as 'closed' in the app regardless if the doors are closed or open. Unfortunately the app shows closed when no connection is present, making troubleshooting difficult. In short, the opener is OK and the app is terrible. The app and wireless features of this opener make it exceptionally frustrating and not worth installing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great after tip from Ryobi Cust. Service Loved the idea of this unit, but had problems with it from day one. It would not go up and if it did it would not go down. A couple months into ownership, I was about ready to take out and reinstall my old opener. Called Ryobi and the rep told me about an antenna located inside the magnetic opener sensor that is stuck on the unit itself. I opened it up and there it was. He said the antenna is supposed to be exposed and not stuffed inside the sensor. Routed it through the same area as the white wires and have not had any problems since. 4 stars just because it was a pain in the rear intially.

Went right in, used old brackets and even used the old safety sensors because they are hardwired inside the walls and I don't want to have to rerun the wires for the new sensors (I don't want to run them superficially or splice them either if I can avoid it). I'm waiting for any deal on the accessories before adding any. I did put in a 4 Ah battery. Biggest gripe is that the app doesn't show when the door is actually open, just says "door is closed" no matter the state. But app still works to open and close door. And if you're not sure if the door is actually closed, you cans still press the CLOSE button on the app and it will close if it it is open, and it WON'T open it if it already happens to actually be closed. If it weren't for this bug, it would be a 5 star product. Others have the same issue so I'm not going to waste time trying to fix at the moment, hoping they come up with a fix down the road. All other complaints I've read I feel are operator error or a rare occurrence.

Installation was not hard. Disadvantages: 1 - Outdoor wireless keypad is very dependable on the location. I have mentioned that if I place it behind my aluminum garage door - it blocks the signal. So after many tries I have figured out that it is better to mount it on a siding without any metals around, perpendicular to the GDO (it also effects the reception). 2 - Wireless connectivity is very poor. At first it took several attempts to connect it my WiFi network. The App is junk, connection to the GOD is not reliable. Sometimes it takes several seconds to execute open/close commend. The door status is always "closed". 3 - Now, the worst: Wifi Relay hub and door motion sensor, which suppose to track the position of the door - does not work at all. The Wifi pairing light on a hub blinks, but the app doesn't see it. Completely useless. Overall, it does open/close door nice and quiet, I linked it to my car Homelink. All these "smart" features are useless for now. App and software needs some fundamental work and polishing.

Basic installation (a replacement for a builders grade lift) was very easy. I did find that the advanced steps were a bit more challenging since (IMO) the guide is less than satisfactory. I ended up calling the help line several times and, except for one, everyone was helpful and patient. The WiFi was the most challenging, but if you follow the app (not the book) it was much easier. I did get hung up a couple of times when the unit was negotiating with the router, but after 10 minutes, I just closed the app and started again. Eventually everything hooked up and as of today, I love the unit(s). Both are so quiet, that if it wasn't for the buzzer, you'd never know they were opening or closing. I did also get the extension cord, pump, blue tooth speaker, the fan and the Park assist. I returned the park assist because the layout of the openers and the angle of the lasers didn't point to a useful location on the parked car.
